More disappointing regular season: 2010 football or 2013-14 hoops

Adrian Clayborn said that team lost its will to win (or something like that). That seems like it's starting to happen with the basketball team as well.

The more I see this post, the more ridiculous it is. Iowa is 20-10 with a decent chance to have a bye in the BTT and a lock for the NCAA Tournament. Myself included, but Iowa fans need to pull their heads out of their ***** and take a step back. Everything that really matters is still in front of this team.

Just because expectations weren't met doesn't mean they weren't warrented, for both teams. The first half of our conference schedule was the tougher half. There was no way to predict we would fall apart on defense like we did. That late in the year you had to think we were who we were. If our defense would have kept up we would have won those games during the 3 game losing streak and would have got the 2 seed with a win against Illinois.

I think the expectations for this year's hoops team are pretty close to being met. Again, they were not ranked in the preseason..most talking heads had them 10-12 wins in league play and making the dance. For those who picked them 13 or more wins in league play, that's on you

Some folks are acting like Iowa has been in the tourney for the last decade and is coming off a year where they were a #1 seed and this is a let down from recent history. I don't like the results per se and we can all see that this team could have won more...but they are who and what they are.

This basketball team hadn't been to an NCAA tourney in 8 years...this year, it will. The 2010 team was coming off a school record tying 11-2 record and had been 9-0 at one point. This basketball team wasn't ranked in the preseason and the 2010 football team was in the Top 10 by some.

This isn't even close

I agree 100%. The 2010 football team was a dropped TD pass by Indiana away from having a 6-6 regular season, after bringing back most of the team that won the orange bowl. This basketball team, while disappointing in some aspects to be sure, is no where near as disappointing as the 2010 football team.

Says the guy who led the charge that this was the best Iowa team since the '86-'87 elite eight team.

Hmm, I remember listening to a podcast with you and Wolfgang a few games into the B1G season and you thinking 13-5 would be the "low end" of Iowa's probabe B1G record.

Difference is at the end of the regular season, we knew the peak of which bowl they are going to.
If Iowa makes the Sweet 16, the regular season will be totally forgotten.

There are some similarities in terms of expectations - the football team had them before the season began, the basketball team played early on into them, but they weren't realistic. But far and away, the 2010 football team wins that debate.

I don't think past years matter much in the discussion of how disappointing an individual season is. They matter in the discussion of what kind of job Fran is doing. That part I'm happy with based on how bad we used to be.

Pre season expectations don't really matter at all either when they are shattered the first 2/3 of the season. It would be different if our schedule was weak in the first half of conference then strong at the end, but that's not the case. The fact is, this team for some reason lost all defensive intensity and the season fell apart (compared to where it would have been had they continued to play hard). Couple that with all the wudda shuddas we were building up and this season has become very disappointing.

All that said, the football season was more disappointing by far. At least in basketball you still have a chance in a tournament setting. In football your season is over.

2010 Football team - preseason Top 10. Finished well outside of Top 25.
2013-14 Basketball - preseason ranked #25. Currently ranked #24.

Even, if Iowa loses in the first round of the NCAA tournament, it still won't eclipse the 2010 football team.
Only Alford's 2006 basketball team is more of a disappointment than the 2010 football team.

Both are equally frustrating; depth, experience and talent doesn't always line up on a yearly basis for Iowa. When it does I guess expectations can get a little out of whack. It just seems Wisconsin can excel when things line up for them......... lately with Iowa it seems like it is always something.

And that's a fail. I said they were the deepest team since 1986-1987. I felt this year's team, at one point, was better than the 2005-2006 team. I was wrong about that.

During the course of the year there is no doubt I began to aim higher. But my preseason expectations were not 13-5. And during the course of the season, I turned out to be wrong.

This is part of what is making this bball season so frustrating. About halfway through the year everyone thought the sky was the limit. Then things abruptly came crashing back to reality.

1. Does Fran still have this program headed in the right direction? Yes.
2. Do I think we can be a really tough out in the tournament? Yes.
3. Has this team met my preseason expectations? Yes.
4. Did I adjust those expectations up mid-season? Yes (even people paid money to do this professionally made those same adjustments).
5. Did the team live up to those raised expectations? No.
6. Do I blame the team for that? Of course not. I'm a grown man, I don't hold others accountable for my personal disappointments.
7. Would I say I'm disappointed? No.
