More disappointing regular season: 2010 football or 2013-14 hoops

I think this is an interesting question. The teams have some similarities. Dont get me wrong there could still be a lot of hoops left which is why I said regular season. The Hawks also played well in their bowl game that year.
Its really tough for me. This bball season has been a massive disappointment to me. Starting with the frustrating losses to Nova and ISU. Then the sudden epic meltdown in the final 1/3 of conference play.
I guess my vote is for hoops. Although I remember being pretty ticked off after that Minnesota football game.

It's tough for me to pick. This has definitely been heartbreaking, and the more recent is always going to hurt worse in the moment. But I think 2010 was probably worse. Our expectations ramped up this year as the season progressed; we eventually got to where the team was talked about as a Final Four contender. But the 2010 football team entered the season as a national title contender. We didn't build up to those expectations; we started there and tumbled down.

well...2010 football was literally about 3 plays from winning a Big Ten title...so that was pretty disappointing. But I will say, they were fun to watch...and I like our football coach and think he's a good rep for our university, which I can't say I feel the same about the bball coach...so I feel my answer is pretty biased when I say that this years bball team is more disappointing.

Not even close. This bball season has not been disappointing, cause its not over. Expectations got a little to high, but win a few more and I'd say its been a great season....considering.

2010 for sure. I've posted the similarities a few times.

We had just come off a crushing Orange Bowl win during a season where we were on the verge of being undefeated.

Everyone was back, including Stanzi, DJK and the entire defense. We were loaded. Set for greatness.

Until AZ. Until the late season slide.

Not even a mediocre win in the forgettable Insight bowl could salvage it.

Yeah 2010 football was awful.
This hoops season also has the chance to get much worse. Lose to Illinois, lose to NW in the 1st round of BTT and then be relegated to a play in game in the dance. Going 2-8 in the last 10.

Expect for 2 fantastic leaders who happened to be fantastic players, Edds & Angerer. For all the talent that team had it lacked leadership.

Similar thing happened in 2001-2002 BB, a lot of great players returned from a good team, but the leader, Oliver was gone, and nobody took his place. Same can be said this BB season without May.

2010 Iowa Football Roster - Fight For Iowa

Not convinced? Scan through this roster. 8-5....are you kidding me?

And agree with Xerxes.....obviously..... talent + leadership >>> talent

The only RB on that team that played 4 years at Iowa was Paki. That is truly sad. Coker, Robinson, Hampton, DeAndre Johnson, and Wehger never showed that year. Wow its getting me irritated all over again.
Thanks me for starting this thread.

This year has not been disappointing, they have been exciting to watch, there have been a few games get away, they have a low winning % in close games they lost

We can answer this question better after the next game but I have enjoyed most of this season minus some late game letdowns.

2010 football because that team, that team should have been better.

I always felt this basketball team was overrated to begin with. I could see it in their first couple of games against the sisters of the poor. I knew this team was headed for 10-8 and around 4-5 place in the conference. And probably a 1-2 win Big Ten Tourney and a 1 game win in the NCAAs and no further. I thought that was the ceiling (although hoping for more).

The final 4 talk was laughable. Just because we made the NIT title game last year (and we did play very tough through most of that tournament unlike now) was not going to make us final 4 contenders this year. As well as we played at times before getting beat down physically by Baylor, we still feasted on NIT teams. Iowa will get beat down physically when they run into a Baylor like team in the Big Dance.

However, I'm disappointed in how we have fell progressively more apart as this season has evolved. It is the mental fallout along with the bush league moves by McCabe towards our own fans and opposing players that makes me embarrassed. Also, Fran's Ts are not effective and also embarrassing.

The collapse is almost Alford light with a higher scoring offense.

Good post! I too felt Iowa BB may have been overrated but how they have lost so many games makes the season difficult.

This basketball team hadn't been to an NCAA tourney in 8 years...this year, it will. The 2010 team was coming off a school record tying 11-2 record and had been 9-0 at one point. This basketball team wasn't ranked in the preseason and the 2010 football team was in the Top 10 by some.

This isn't even close

2010 football was a preseason top 10 team that finished the year unranked. This year's basketball team was just outside the top 25 preseason and will probably finish the year in the same position. Obviously the 2010 football team was a greater let down.

Just because expectations weren't met doesn't mean they weren't warrented, for both teams. The first half of our conference schedule was the tougher half. There was no way to predict we would fall apart on defense like we did. That late in the year you had to think we were who we were. If our defense would have kept up we would have won those games during the 3 game losing streak and would have got the 2 seed with a win against Illinois.
