montell reinstated

to be honest not sure but it could be multiple reasons...one tom wants him to be in the room longer to establish himself as the starter...i don't know how much mm has been in the room so who knows

That is huge! I hope he realizes the opportunity that he has and takes charge. This is an enormous improvement at 149. Welcome back Montell!

He's another year older and hasn't been in the room. I would assume that 149 would be more comfortable for him. If he went back to 141, then bump Ballweg up to 149. Either way, an improvement at 149...in my eyes!

We need him more at 149, but I suspect he'll be at 141 again, and ready to win an NCAA title immediately.

I am happy for MM. I know he has had many chances to show his true worth as a STUDENT/athlete so I hope he takes advantage of this opportunity.

I don't think anyone is sure about anything with regard to Marion (other than the official release that he's back on the team). No one knows what weight he'll be at or when/if he'll wrestle for the Hawkeyes this season. I assume he'll be allowed to wrestle at some point after serving some time in pergatory, but we don't even know how he's faring against the Ballweg brothers at 141 and 149. Again, it's another assumption that he'll win a spot, but since he hasn't been in the room it's just an assumption at this point. You may have noticed I used the root word "assume" a lot...you are correct that I am not in the know and am attempting to use logic and common sense...but you know what they say about assuming. In the mean time, Iowa has several big duals coming up in the month of January with the current line up. And OBTW, 141 may be the toughest weight class this year, so it's not a given that Montel will even AA.

Im not a Wrestling person, but from the beginning this kid seemed intent earning his way back.

MM is back. He has been reinstated to the team. When he competes is totally up to TB. The projected date is Jan 30, but that could change based on MM's conditioning and work effort. He will wrestle when Tom feels he is ready and deserves to wrestle. The weight will be decided on what is best for MM. That last part is my "opinion". The last I heard, MM weighed around 149-150. If so, 141 would not be too difficult for him.

curious how fuls and other insiders didn't see this coming?

I don't know that I ever said with complete certianty that he wouldn't ever make it back. I definitely said for the last few weeks/months that he had not been cleared as he hadn't been. A lot of people were jumping the gun saying that it was done and he was cleared to try and get the scoop.

guess it might not of been you but if i remember right there were a few of the ppl that are in the room a lot and know wrestlers personally just think its awesome something like this didn't get leaked because most of the insiders thought there was no way he would be in a singlet again who knows whats in the works!

Don't get me wrong, i'm thrillled to have MM back on the team 141,149, or where ever. But does anyone else think the U of I athletic dept and i guess the wrestling program too looks kind of foolish after publicly stating that MM was "permanently suspended" after his last arrest? I mean they do know the meaning of the word permanently right? I guess if there was even a 3% chance of him coming back why not just say he is suspended? It makes them look like a 'win at all cost' athletic department that Iowa people usually bash. I'm not saying i think that, but it does make them look like that.

I think the athletic dept & coaching staff saw MM as a kid that didn't give a sh$t after repeated mistakes. Therefore, they didn't give him a chance because they didn't expect him to do what he did.

Maybe I am reading into this too much but I think Montell chose his own path back to the team, he wasn't given one. he came back and said "See, I can straighten my a$$ out, on my own, and I don't need wrestling to do it" (otherwise he would have transferred by now).

I'm wondering if you didn't get the official memo from the AD when the announcement was made. If you did, you would have noticed the asterisk after "permanently suspended" with a footnote that said "for 1st semester". I'm kidding of course, so yeah makes you wonder. From the rumors, this was up to the athletic department more so than Coach Brands. Don't want to get in a huge debate over this, but why not the same treatment for a certain RB. I'm torn, on one hand I'm a disciplinarian who never feels sorry when adults make mistakes and have to suffer consequences. However, it's also nice to actually see a young adult admit their mistake, not make excuses, and work to fix the problem.
