Miss Woodbury at the moment.

Whipping boy for many... but we are missing his defensive presence and rebounding.

This team has potential for sure.. but we need to find some better interior defense.

Ehh. They scored a lot of points in the paint but it had little to do with our interior defense. We were getting smoked on the dribble drives, which quite honestly is where we miss Sapp and MG the most. Our "center" scored 24 points D tonight and played pretty good D for the most part.

I liked Woody, and his defense was a strength. That said, that transition Catch/Spin/Dunk by Cook.....dude. You can teach/improve defense....you can't teach that.

Team Defense was bad tonight, especially underneath....but can be fixed.

Yeah this team misses Woodbury but, IMO, it misses Clemmons and Uthoff even more based on what I seen last night. Clemmons would have slowed down the dribble drives and Uthoff would have swatted a few of them away.

I noticed last night that we were a little weak inside, but then remembered that we're playing a bunch of young guys down there and will need time to develop. They're gonna be damn good in a year, though. At no time did I think that I wished we still had Woodberry, or whatever his name is.

Maybe, "at the moment". It will be a very short moment.

I mentioned in the "Negatives" thread - Woody would've fouled out midway 2nd, last night. Cook / Uhl are light years more athletic and agile. There's just so much more to work with in terms of coaching them how to move their feet, challenge shots without fouling and recovery angles (from this ridiculous strategy of hedging the bigs out of the zone).
First things first, stop the matador D. However, I'm not so sure this isn't a by-product of Fran's get-n-go offense, especially for a young player trying to keep up.

I appreciate all Iowa's former players. But I don't miss them. Especially after seeing that game. WOW that was fun basketball to watch.
Like HawkeyeWalker said above, you can teach defense. This team will only get better and man have they got potential!

This is exactly where Adam would have benefited the team last night. I am not saying Cook was bad but Adam was really good at help defense. Last night was a bunch of individuals playing defense, no real teamwork or help.

No, i understand what he meant to the D and the presence he had - I was a big Woody fan the entire time he was here. I still don't miss him, he was great, but it's time for a different game plan and someone else to get a shot.

That's the equivalent of saying the people that miss Woody only care about play on the defensive end of the floor.

Cook thru 3 games has established himself as more of an offensive threat then Woody ever did. Maybe he's not as good defensively but when the other 4 on the floor are playing as bad of defense as Cook was then it wouldn't have mattered it Woody was on the defensive end.

While Cook may be a defensive liability 3 games into his career he has the opportunity to grow into a role as a defensive asset. Through 4 years Woody never was a dominant offensive weapon. The people that say they don't miss Woody may be looking forward. IMO I'm not going to miss a guy that I felt never really developed over the course of four years. Cook is 3 games into his career, IMO its unfair to compare him defensively to a 4 year starter that earned his minutes at the defensive end of the floor.

Wrong.

Swap Woodbury for Cook. 1) He would've fouled out. At least 2 fouls would've been 20 feet from the basket, throwing his hip into the guard as he blew by (due to the stupid strategy of hedging the bigs). Delgado would've abused him, inside, drawing the other 3 fouls. 2) Iowa would've lost by 15-18. Less offense from the post + allowing more scores from the post.

As the season progresses - and Cook / Uhl learn to use their significant athleticism advantage over Woody on D - you will see how important it is to have an inside presence that can actually stay on the floor and be productive on both ends of the court.

I thought you were referring to the sexual orientation of our defenders as they watched the Seton Hall players swoop past them for the uncontested layups. Definitely looked girlish standing there that way. All correctable and film will allow for a lot of fun to be poked at the guys as they curtsied and bowed out of the way for the easy Pirate layups.

BINGO! Woody was just as lost on D his Freshman year and didn't have a quarter of Cook's offense - don't miss Woody.

Why do you have to swap out Woodbury for Cook? Why can't you look at it as swapping Woodbury for Uhl which would be a major upgrade

I'll take what we have this year with the potential. The game will slow down for a couple of the freshman and I think their D will improve but it was bad last night. But again, if I had to choose I'd take the players we have now with all their athleticism.

No, Woody was a "typecast" player. Yes, his D & plugging the middle was his strong point but he had a one dimensional game. Scoring was a challenge for him. The players we have now are more athletic with well rounded games so the ceiling is much higher for the team as a whole with these players I believe.
