Minshew Got Traded

I saw that earlier too. I was a little surprised. I have not seen CJ play but read one article that said he was not looking good in the preseason. Probably a false narrative because I saw his stat line and it didn't look all that bad.

I saw that article as well. Practice report. He's played extremely well in both games. He's capable as a backup. Won't pressure Lawrence. He was brought in to be a backup at best. Probably traded Minshew once they saw CJ can handle the role. No qb controversy if Beathard relieves and does well. Minshew brought a greater return in trade.

Beathard has played really well

Beathard has played really well
I'm genuinely surprised Beathard hasn't gotten more of a chance as a starter by someone. He always seems to play well when he gets the chance.

If the league was just full of elite QB talent, that would be one thing...but so many teams seem to struggle finding an effective QB, it's crazy to me no one has taken a look.

CJ has looked great against 3rd stringers in mop up duty in 4Q of pre-season games.

Which is better than sucking against 3rd stringers in mop up duty.

He is locked in as a career backup at this point. Best case scenario he is Ryan Fitzpatrick or Nick Foles. Timing and luck is a big part of this, in a alternative universe could he have been Kirk Cousins? Absolutely.

Are you kidding me? CJB got a bunch of starts for the 49ers and ended up getting beat out for the backup job by Nick Mullins!!!!

CJB has gotten far more chances than your typical 3rd round QB draft choice. He has had his chances. He just blew it with San Fran.

Fortunately he is getting another chance with the Jags. Unforunately you will have to root for Trevor Lawrence to get hurt in order for CJ to get any playing time. Good or bad, TL is going to get all the snaps this year when he is healthy.

His opportunities in SF were sporadic and initially when he was put in the team was terrible. Every time he was put out there his chances at having success was next to nothing. His biggest flaw is holding on to the ball too long when his first read isn't there. He stays with that too long so much that he's too late to deliver on the other ones as well. When that 1st read is open he's usually on the money with it.

I wish he'd have gotten a longer look that last yr when they went with Mullens who stunk it up. But part of me thinks they were hoping to lose so they could get a better draft pick and hence in position to trade up for Lance how they did.

He's in a good spot now. Lawrence is almost inevitably going to struggle or get himself hurt the way he plays. CJ will almost certainly get on the field this year maybe sooner then later.

I think if Beathard landed on the right squad he could be a solid starter. The issue is everyone who needs a starter swings for the fences and they don't want solid. They want the guy who can go 8-8 year 1, 10-6 with a playoff berth in year 2 and win the Super Bowl in year 3. And oh by the way the team around the guy totally sucks and has a shitty line and only one playmaker on offense, but it doesn't matter, either give us hope of the 3 year Super Bowl plan or GTFO.

I think a big part of the trade is that Minshew was such a fan favorite that they would be calling for him if Lawrence struggles.

Well by your point, he is also working with 3rd string offensive players. It isn't like he's got 1st string lineman, WR and RB going up against the 3rd string D's.

And, the circle of the NFL continues. Beathard gets #2 job in Jacksonville, so Minchew gets traded to Philly, who cuts Mullens to make room for him ... and now Mullens may end up in Cleveland. Musical Chairs and the music is winding down.

Yup it's nuts. Now Cam Newton was cut so where's he end up when the music stops? Backup in Dallas? If they make that move a week ago NE mighta traded for Minshew to compete or backup Jones?... Maybe they bring Mullens in now that he's on the street. I think they still have Hoyer on the roster so maybe they'll just go with those 2 on the 53. Today will be interesting with everyone having to get down to 53

As somebody that DGAF about the NFL, should I know who Minshew is? I've heard his name a lot recently but never regarding any of his actual play.

Minshew played 2 years at East Carolina and then one year at Washington State. WSU went 11-2 and beat Iowa State in the 2018 Alamo Bowl.

Drafted by Jacksonville in 6th round of 2019 draft. Has started 21 games in the NFL for the Jaguars.

Love the guy already

I agree. I was kinda bummed when I read he was traded. I was all-in with Minshew Mania a couple years ago. He showed just enough moxie early on that I thought he'd be different from the other QB busts we had in the past (namely, Blaine Gabbert and Blake Bortles).

I still think CJB will see a fair amount of playing time.
