Minnesota names Tracy Claeys HC

Rob Howe retweeted from Minnesota Gophers. Hopefully his first game will be a beat down he won't soon forget.

Obviously named today because they know Iowa will roll them, and it would look terrible to name a guy hc after that many consecutive losses.
 
I wonder how much Kill lobbied for him. They gave him a 3 yr contract which isn't bad for Minny if he can keep most the staff in tact.
 
New coach. Who knows. When we hired Kirk Ferentz I thought, this is the best we can get. A coach from Maine with a losing record. Five years from now we could be saying Minny struck gold with this hire. I wish him well, just not to much well.

Going with Claeys was probably wise. Especially on the 3-year contract. It allows Minnesota to easily cut bait after next year if it's obvious that Claeys isn't the guy, but allows them to keep staff continuity and try to continue to build what Kill started there. Gophers' schedule eases up a bunch next year. Instead of Michigan and Ohio State as crossovers, they get Maryland, Rutgers and Penn State (with move to 9 conference games).

He will likely have some growing pains as the head guy. As history shows, really isn't much of a way to know how good a guy is/isn't until he gets to run his own program. The clock management at the end of the Michigan game was shockingly poor. To get just 2 snaps off in 19 seconds with first and goal at the half-yard line is insane.

Yes, to all the above.

With no permanent AD, this was the obvious move. Keep the decent recruiting class they have and avoid a likely difficult search for a replacement. If Claeys does well...they're good. If not, by the end of 2017 it'll be easy to dump him.(he gets a freebie in 2016 as a first year HC, but not much more as the "rebuilding" angle doesn't exist in this case) The warm and fuzzies over the Kill resignation will be long gone and the new AD will want his own guy unless Claeys has em in the hunt.

Yes. I thought the same thing. A 3 yr contract was wise. Once the new AD is hired, they may choose to cut ties after next year and only have to buy out a couple years. I'm sure that's that they were thinking, to give the guy a small trial contract to prove himself but small enough they can buy it out if they choose to.

He is not the only one quite a few college and NFL guys struggle with this. He definitely will not be a loner in some exclusive club when it comes to managing a game.

Congrats to coach Claeys. Next year we'll be able to make fun of the goofs with a weak schedule and let's see how that works out for them.
