Miller: Low Point Loss

There may be worse losses in the Kirk Ferentz era as it relates to what it meant to certain seasons, but Iowa's loss to Minnesota this Saturday is certainly a low point.

Before the game, there were debates as to whether or not this year's Minnesota team was the worst in the Big Ten since the 1981 Northwestern team. The amount of points Minnesota had given up in just the first half of their three Big Ten losses was more than 100 points and their offense was the worst in the Big Ten.

Yet Iowa lost to these Gophers, falling to 5-3 with an arduous November slate still to play.

After eight games, you typically know what kind of football team you have. As it relates to this year's Iowa team, the likely reality is that they are just an average football team. They have yet to win on the road, losing to two bad squad's as well as the loss to Penn State, who may be the worst 8-1 team in the history of college football.

Iowa's defense couldn't get off the field in the fourth quarter, but it was the offense who failed the team on this day, something we have been saying since November of 2010.

When you have a rusher that puts up 252 yards, the third highest single game total in school history, you should not lose a football game. When you take into account the other 13 games in Iowa history where it's running back topped the 200-yard mark, they are 12-2. The other loss was at Northwestern in 2005, another game where Iowa led by double-digits in the fourth quarter and where the opponent successfully converted an onside kick.

Iowa had been stellar in the redzone this year, scoring on 26 of its 27 trips. In this game, they were just 3 of 6, missing a 24-yard field goal, a 43 yard field goal and a fumble on a blindside blitz sack. Each of those miscues was very costly in a game that you lose by one point.

When you put up nearly 300 yards in the first half, you should score more than seven points. Iowa didn't and it lost the game.

While Iowa's defense is challenged from a personnel standpoint, something we knew would be the case back in January, they allow the opposing quarterback to get far too comfortable. Is it a coincidence that opposing quarterbacks put up one of their best games of their respective seasons when they play Iowa?

Look at this year; Steele Jantz had a game for the ages and has since been benched. Matt McGloin was solid against Iowa, by far his best game. Marqueis Gray has been abysmal this season throwing the ball, completing less than 50 percent of his passes. Against Iowa? 11-17. Indiana's true freshman looked good...and so on.

Once upon a time, perhaps you could get away with the base defense Iowa played. But today's quarterbacks are a different breed. They run the spread offense in high school and have been making quick decisions and hitting underneath routes for years before they get to college. Where Iowa's defense is willing to take its chances plays right into where today's quarterbacks are strong.

That's not to pin this game on the defense; they played their best game of the season through three quarters. But it was the onside kick recovery in the fourth quarter that broke Iowa's back...it's also the second straight year where Minnesota has recovered an onside kick against Iowa to propel them to a victory.

This was also Iowa's 5th straight road loss and James Vandenberg is now 0-4 on the road as Iowa's starting quarterback.

Iowa sits at 5-3 with back to back home games against Michigan and Michigan State. It's very hard to pick Iowa in either one of those games right about now, and I have felt bad about the game at Purdue since the middle of summer. The game at Lincoln looks downright scary right now. The thought of Rex Burkhead slamming into the Iowa defensive front? Yikes.

Iowa needs one more win for bowl eligibility, and this program really needs those 15 bowl practices. We all know they returned the fewest starters of any Big Ten team, so that developmental time is paramount for this club.

Right now, it's tough to be optimistic about any one of these final four games.

THIS. But you watch... it doesn't matter who Iowa plays the game is close. We have even odds of beating Michigan or Michigan State as we do Minnesota or Iowa State. We are stupid.

I think these kids might be better off with less time with this coaching staff at this point. No reason for them to do any more damage than is already done this season. Pretty sad this staff has 32 in the NFL right now and this is the product we get.

You know how the Zooker is a great recruiter and a horrible coach. I think KF and staff are the mirror...horrible coaches but great NFL developers.

This is a serious question but do you ever call for a coach's job, Jon? Or is it your policy to only comment on releases after the fact?

can't argue too much about this being possibly the lowest point for Iowa football in the last ten years. sad day for hawk fans. i'm still stunned, i guess not angry yet.

Jon, we get zero pressure on the quarterback, we were not even close to sacking him on 99% of the plays. Any quarterback can have success against us. It is not our vanilla defense, we just don't have the talent to put any amount of pressure on them. We don't need to throw our defense out. How about the offensive line stop having penalties in key areas or missed blocks in the red zone? Look at the tape, several of our drives sputtered in the red zone due to poor blocking. Then, in a key part of the game (happened at Penn State in the red zone), we get a false start penalty. We are just not good enough to overcome this.

Translation: We will not be bowling this year. I agree, Jon. The coaching staff has not earned their paychecks the past few years, and for the first time, I think there needs to be some changes - starting with a special teams coach. I'm not sure if we have one or not, but if we do he needs to go and if we don't we need to bring one in. Special teams has been an obvious disappointment for the past 6 or 7 years. I think it's time for Norm to hang it up as well and I hope the Mike Stoops rumors are true. We need a defensive coordinator who can come in and light a fire under these guys' azzes because they look lifeless right now. The sad thing in all of this right now is that we still control our own destiny in our division. If we take care of business we win the division and are playing in Indy. Sad, but true. Things need to change and they need to change quickly, otherwise Barta needs to take a hard look in the offseason at forcing KF to make some changes in his personnel. Heck, we can find a coach to lose to Minnesota twice in a row (very bad Minnesota teams) and only have to pay him a fraction of what we're paying KF.

Jon, Not sure how you can say that the likely reality is that they are an average football team, especially when, as you mentioned, they are 1) winless on the road, 2) losing to two bad squad's (really one should be clarified with the adjective horrible), 3) and losing to the worst 8-1 team in the history of college football. To me that adds up to a team where the likely reality is that they are a below average team.

This program is in year 2 of a what looks like could be a 4yr (or longer) slide. We may be witnessing the end of the Ferentz era.

Yep. The Hawks will pop up and nip one of their remaining foes and the faithful will push for a Ferentz lifetime contract.

He's in a position where he can't if he wants to keep this site running. Jon, I know you hated Alford, but you stayed professional. I appreciate that you take the high ground, otherwise this site would be a pretty nasty place to be around.

Jon I understand and appreciate all of our information and writings but all of the top programs don't need to make excuses losing to teams like Minnesota, Iowa State etc. They just flat out beat them. We should be no different especially with our coach making the amount of money he does. If we want to be in the elite company we need to start acting like we belong and start playing like it as an expectation. If not, pay someone way less money and temper your expectations and get what we are getting now and settle for it.

It is time Iowa starts to build for the next coach. I too wish we had someone in line for the job. Who? Does KoK support taking knees or is he being told to do so? If being told to do so it is not his fault. If KF is making him do this, then lets knock this off immediately and let the OC do his job. Taking knees early and often is for porn, not college football games.

I can point you to a 45 minute controlled 'rant' the week before Lickliter was called into Barta's office, where I said I could no longer support him as coach. Still have the audio. And no one else in the media had said that at that point.

So next question

My comment was not accusatory I sincerely didn't know.

15 bowl practices for what? to go 6-6 again next year. I'm rooting for Iowa to win, but you honestly think that 15 extra bowl practices will cure the ills of this program?

I am not in the Fire Ferentz camp. I am disappointed like everyone else, but there are four games left to play out this year. Even then, the guy has built up a great deal of goodwill and he's been a damn good coach for Iowa.

I get that people are ticked, but I think some people are over reacting a bit here.

2nd year in a row that Iowa loses to a bad Minnesota team. This Gopher squad is miles and away worse than last year's team.

Iowa has been playing down to the level of lesser squads for several years now. It's becoming a trend that is very troubling.

Iowa needs to really take a long hard look things. I don't want Ferentz fired but Norm and KOK have had a hand in 2 bad losses.

Iowa State: Iowa refuses to throw to McNutt. Norm gets blitz happy.
Today: Linebackers terrible in pass coverage. No pressure on the QB. Jason White in at the end of the game and passes going short of the chains.

I'd say there is blame to fall right on the staff for those two losses there. Penn State is a good team and I can live with that loss, but Iowa has a weak schedule and they are 5-3 at the moment.

I can confidently say its better to have them than not
