It just shows how bad iowa has been historically at qb. We need a qb coach IMO.

Bingo! We have not recruited a championship caliber QB. Stanzi has good 'numbers' but has never been a great QB. Stanzi has high completion percentage because of the short passes he throws. He has never been great throwing deep or making plays out of nothing. Just average.

I'd love to see Stanzi's completion % on throws over 15 yds; has to be horrendous. There's no excuse for missing McNutt today, twice.

I don't think it's unreasonable. Iowa had 2 1st team all-Big Ten and 1 2nd team OL. That's not including Calloway and Reiff who were solid as well.

Robert Gallery was the second overall draft pick. Steinbach and Nelson were early second rounders. Sobieski played in the league. David Pryor was a really good offensive linemen, and probably would have been the second best on the 2009 Iowa team.

Gallery is one of the three best tackles in Iowa history. Nelson is probably one of the three best centers in Iowa history. You can make a case for Steinbach as one of the best guards in Iowa history.

We aren't just talking all conference players here...we are talking all timers. Bulaga was good, but he's not in an all time discussion, nor were any Iowa OL last year....three OL from the 2002 team are in the all timer discussion at their positions.

Haven't read all the posts here, but if we are ranking QBs, obviously Long is 1, but I think Matt Rodgers is definitely number 2. I think Stanzi has a good case for #3 particularly due to his number of wins. Rodgers was just a flat out clutch player, more so than Stanzi IMO.

Bulaga was named lineman of the year in the Big Ten last year and was a first round pick in the NFL who hasn't been a complete bust at tackle like Gallery. David Porter was good but Dace Richardson when healthy was better. Callaway and Eubanks are probably similar talent level to Porter and Sobieski. I agree the 2002 line was better, but I don't think it made as huge of a difference in the play of both qb's as you are indicating.

Stanzi has four INTs this year and we are passing more than I can remember and I have followed the Hawks for forty years. Stanzi is for sure in the top 5 and I find it hard to argue that he is not number 2.

(modern era)
1. Long
2. Hartlieb
3. Banks/Tate
4. Stanzi
5. Rodgers

By the way (i'm a big Tate fan, not one of those haters)... just curious. Wouldn't you have loved to watch Tate at the ends of these games this year with these receivers? Just a total hypothetical but his escapability was second to none and he could throw bee-bees on the run to DJK and McNutt. I just don't see him folding under pressure like what seemed to happen to our offense all year this year.

That's true CFHawk, but you could have a good qb start 4 years or a great qb play 2 or 3 which wouldn't be accounted for using that indicator. Look at Jake Locker for Washington. He'll probably be one of the top qb's in the draft and he plays for an awful team that can't buy a win.

No way 2004 Drew Tate is 0-4 in those situations.

I've read a lot of crazy stuff here, probably even posted some stuff that many thought was crazy but comparing the 2002 OL to 2009 OL is absolutely nuts.

Eubanks would have never seen the field over Nelson, not even close. Nelson is one of the best C at Iowa, ever. He received AA awards.

Steinbach was a 1st team AA, across the board, not some random publication, B10 OL of the year, one of the best ever at G at Iowa

Gallary, one of the best at his position ever at Iowa

Maybe Bulaga fully healthy would have started but he wasn't last year and struggled. Him winning B10 OL of the year was a joke. Watch GB this year and you'll see why.

Ben Sobieski was a backup on the 2002 team and he started for the Bills at one point.
