Miller: Ferentz 'Dead Serious' ; Is He Dead Wrong?

Used against Iowa on the recruiting trail? Come on.

This.

Recruit- "Why should I pick you over Iowa?"

Assistant coach from B1G school- "Well havent you heard, Iowa is never going to return a punt again as long as Ferentz is the head coach."

Recruit- "Well that seals it. Im picking you guys over Iowa"

A coach will tell a recruit anything, including bald-faced lies. Ferentz is giving the enemy ammo to be used against him.

So you all think Iowa is literally never going to return a punt again as long as KF is here?

Just because a return isnt going to be the call doesnt mean the guy catching the punt wont have the option to run with ball if there is some open space.

Anybody who thinks every single punt that Iowa has the oppurtunity to catch over the next few years is going to be fair caught probably should just stop watching football.

If he dismisses an assistant coach, it will send a major signal...as if he turned on the spot light and then publicly executed an assitant.

He would't embarass a coach like that.

Has anybody paid attention to Iowa recruiting lately? Looks like the competition already has plenty of ammo to recruit negatively.

I like dirt racing. It keeps me occupied in the summer months and it was something my brother and I always did with my dad.

That said, there is an expression in dirt track stock car racing that is used frequently: Live by the slide-job, die by the slide-job.

For those of you who are unaware, a slide-job is a move where one car dives below another and gets just far enough ahead of them to where they can slide up in front of them and complete the pass. Sometimes you benefit from it, other times you're on the losing end. Every now and then you do it wrong and stick yourself in the wall.

My question to Kirk would be simple: How many times have punt returns hurt you, and how many times have they helped you score points over the course of your time as the Iowa head coach?

Lets not be irrational. Look at the full picture.

Hi welcome to Iowa,

We like to lose to awful teams in our sold out stadium. We have trouble getting the ball to playmakers. If you are a rb then youll love it here. As a teenager Im sure youre in favor limiting all risk of failure. How do feel about having your holidays free because there is a good chance we wont go to a bowl and if we do then itll be before Christmas.

Do you like returning punts? No....good. How do you feel about catching them? Can you raise your hand to signal a fair catch?

Did I mention we are the best team in the state?........most likely.

As of right now we play Nebraskers on black friday........thats a really fun rivalry.

So you might want to move us onto your short list along with Eastern Michigan, North Dakota Tech, Slippery Rock, and ICCC.

I think he's put himself in a treacherous position. What's he gonna do/say when it happens again? And yes, it will.

Why would Iowa coaches say anything close to this when trying to recruit a kid?

Guys with speed don't want to play for Iowa anyway so what's the loss? 0-0=0.

If completely avoiding punt returns is the only way you can prevent a team from converting a fake punt then I'm all for it. I don't see why they can't install a system where they try to do both. Or man up the eligible receivers and run a punt block with the rest of the guys every single time.

I understand this whole theory sounds ridiculous, but if it means getting the other offense off of the field and ending this fake punt insanity then at this point it is what it is. My big screen television is in favor of it as well because I may very well go full out Office Space on it if I have to watch another team catch the Hawks with their pants down.

Why is the world round? Who can see a fake punt coming? Who knows the correct way to cover an onside? Who knows GD offense?

Youd have to purdy smart to answer all these brain busters.

As far as actually not returning punts anymore, that probably won't be used. "Don't go to Iowa because they don't return punts anymore."

However the comment itself was just dumb. As Jon basically said in his article, if you think that way fine, but don't say it. And that could be used something like this.

Opposing coach: "So who else are you looking at?"

17 year old: "Iowa has been down to see me."

Opposing coach: "Oh the school that can't figure out how to return a punt!"

Sarcastic tone, but that would be all that it would take.
