Miller: Dennis Dodd Jumps the Shark

He is no journalist. The news media today is vastly different from years ago. Newspapers and magazines are a dying breed. Today it is all about shock headlines and commentary. Very little actual news.

Jon: Glad to not be the only media critic on this site. I appreciate how you have handled this whole situation. You have been spot on. This seems like something that the BTN and the Iowa J School should go after. Should warrant a suspension at minimum.

Not only because the idea of the article is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in print but because he also contradicts himself in nearly every sentence. Just a terribly written piece.

Some Twitter msgs I ended up sending Dodd yesterday afternoon:

@dennisdoddcbs The public DESERVES to know medical information about college kids? Are you serious? The PUBLIC DESERVES? No they don't.

@dennisdoddcbs As a dad, I'm sure you'd be in favor of a hospital employee releasing your kid's records to the PUBLIC who DESERVE it.

I don't know if he reads mentions/replies to him, but I had to send him something...

Great stuff, Jon.

They had to leave the jacket on for 2 reasons...

1. It's The Fonz...the jacket ain't comin' off for NObody!

2. It helped sell people on it not being a stunt man! Cuz, you know...The Fonz didn't need one!

3. The Fonz had a gut on him by that point in the show so they couldn't just show him with a shirt off.

Good work out of you Jon. The thing that escapes him and these other tools writing this stuff is one simple fact...Kirk's KID is on this team and I highly doubt he would approve any activity that would endanger his own kids life, let alone the HIPPA violations. Dennis Dodd can get bent as far as I am concerned

Many have been right in pointing out (numerous times) that modern media, particularly new media, is sensationalistic and accuracy ranks behind being first or getting eyeballs. In fact, so many people have been pointing this out that I have been getting bored reading it, because it isn't exactly a new revelation. It's like saying "Congress is unethical" like it's a new revelation.

However, now it seems like you guys have fallen into Dodd's trap. People like Dodd know that all mail is fan mail...even hate mail. If someone gets ****** and responds to you, that means they had an emotional reaction to what you wrote, and they will come back to listen/read you to see if you saw the light.

So stop writing this guy emails, stop complaining to his bosses, stop tweeting at him, or else he'll just keep pressing the Iowa story. You can tell just from the snippet of the article Jon quoted that Dodd was aiming directly for a response from Iowa fans.

He trolled, and you fell for it. You don't fight a troll with logic, you fight them with silence.

Bingo

I am not angry because Dennis Dodd is attacking the Hawkeyes. Then agin if it was not the Hawks I would not be posting this. I agree with him when he said he would like answers. As Jon stated everyone wants those answers including Kirk and Chris. In a situation like this it will take time, and should protect the privacy of those involved. The big problem I am having with Dennis are:

1) I wonder if he would give up a source, or would he protect their privacy?

2) Watergate was a government affair that effected the whole nation. Why even bring it up? What he did is the equivalent of someone saying, "I don't mean to be rude but....." you know whats coming next.

3) Our freedoms also give us the right to privacy.

4) He utilizing sensational journalism. Be a journalist Dodd get me some facts, get a family to talk, anything basically do your job as a journalist.

Guy's a Grade-A d-bag. Any wonder that he's so critical of Iowa since he's a Mizzou alum?!?!

The only point you left out was for people to stop getting worked up over what someone wrote. If you are unable to do that, stop reading what that person writes. Every time you open up their 'articles' online you help keep them employed. Dennis Dodd and Pat Forde own you all, and it's hilarious.

While I agree with the overall point of "not feeding the troll", I also believe strongly that when a "journalist" behaves irresponsibly - not just critically, but irresponsibly - they need to be called out. Forde and Doyel were jerks, but Dodd crossed into unethical by openly advocating federal laws be broken and private records violated.

The right venue is the ombudsman, if CBS has one - anyone know?

There's a wide gap between "journalist" and "columnist". Whether or not it's ever made public, I would venture to guess the powers that be at cbssports.com have already told Dennis Dodd that it's probably not in his best interest to endorse illegal activity.

There are so many other good places to get news, if that's what you're looking for. You're never going to find it with columnists like this.

And I think you have a niave view of what modern journalism is. As long as a guy gets eyeballs, you can do pretty much write whatever you want.

It's a sugar high, or crying wolf. Sure, you can make a splash in the short run. But over the long haul, if you are all sizzle and no steak, it will not last.

Now, that goes for most folks that aren't already on a platform like Dodd has. He won't be going anywhere.

This may be the best post that you have ever written. +1

Not true. All year people here have been complaining about sports talk guys in Des Moines being sensationalistic and damaging. These are not guys with a national platform, these are guys in small market nowhere lobbing fireballs and getting the peanut gallery worked up.

Those guys haven't gone anywhere, and the peanut gallery won't stop listening to them. In fact, plenty of guys in sports have turned trolling into a long lasting career in the national media; Jay Mariotti, Skip Bayliss, Colin Cowherd, etc...

This is true...

the great thing about the Internet is that it became the great equalizer in helping people determine if someone is credible or not. In times past, the only "credible" people were those who worked for high-profile media organizations. Today, with the access to information that everyone has, we can decide for ourselves what is credible and what is not.

Bloggers can become "credible" over time because they gain a track record over time of publishing things that are fair and have correct information. An example is the MGo Blog. I view that blog as a much more credible source of information about UM athletics than the Detroit News or Free Press. The National Football Post (in essence a blog) has broken many NFL-related stories and I regard that as just as serious a source for NFL news as ESPN, CBS, etc.). Why? Because they have people writing for them with a track record of not making stuff up.

I haven't read Dodd that closely over time, but I will have a hard time taking anything he says seriously in the future. He's proven that he will just throw stuff out there that either a) he doesn't really believe or b) does believe but arrives at his belief on such a bad set of facts that his judgment needs to be called into question on any issue he writes about.
