Miller & Deace: Nebraska Makes 'Disastrous, Dumpster Fire' Hire

Little red fans claim they don't demand NCs and aren't delusional but I was talking to some coworkers and they said they need to win the big games like MSU, Wisky etc. So I asked if they win those it is ok if they lose a few other games to lesser teams, they of course say no. So any nebby fan who tells you anything less than they demand NCs and 1995 is coming back is full of it. They all want it, they all expect it. They are just trying to be a little humble so they don't look stupid each year.

Here's a fun fact. Nebraska averaged 3.8 wins per season from 1950 to 1961. SO before they were lucky enough to get Devaney and Osborne, two legendary coaches in a row from 1962 to 1998, they were basically on par with Iowa State. Right now they're basically surviving on that legacy which only lasts so long.

I just don't see what the risk is here for Nebraska. They already were irrelevant, not winning titles and getting embarrassed in big games. If the new guy does that......then it's just more of the same.

Are you really using an 11-year frame of reference as a comparison to ISU? Heck you can look at nearly any program in the country over a selected 11-year period and find similar numbers (yes, even mighty Alabama). Please tell me that you aren't saying that besides for a 36 year period that produced multiple national championships and Heisman winners, Nebraska is equal to Iowa State.:eek:

Dang it Jon....did this podcast take place before Barta made his comments about KF being back and his expectations??? PLEASE tell me you will devote ample time on your next podcast to that alone. His comments would already be sparking pitchforks and fire revolts in Ann Arbor and Columbus....they were simply inexcusable.

It did, and in this podcast I said Kirk would be back.

Ok, 1941 to 1949 Nebby averaged 2.8 wins per season. So that's about 3.4 wins per season from 1941 to 1961. All of Nebraska's success can be attributed to Devaney and Osborne and that's it. There will come a time when old trophies don't matter much. Yale has a bunch of trophies to.

Jon - I understand the KF being back thingy....but I think we would all like to hear y'alls take on Barta's milktoast answers as to expectations.....BOWL CHAMPIONSHIPS?????? He is soooooo lucky he is in Iowa City and in a state like Iowa....not to mention under the President he works for who obviously thinks he hung the moon. What do you hear about boosters? I always have heard in the past how well KF smooths them over.....have things changed at all, or are there really no big whales any more than can make anything happen?

GB isn't a really a strong public communicator. I'm sure he's skilled 1 on 1 though. I'm not going to second guess what he said.

It is what it is.

I guess Nebby was disappointed Illinois gave Tim Brewster a vote of confidence & another year, so 2nd choice was Mike Riley, 61 yr old Mike Riley. Why pull the trigger so fast? I mean, was he going to be a hot commodity? Geez.

So is this basically akin to hiring Dan McCarney?
It sounds like he is an older just as nice just as avg version of kirk ferentz.

That gives iowa 3-4 years to right the ship...or sink it...or barta just rearrange the chairs (which is most likely to happen)

I think most of this comes from not understanding the situation at Oregon State. It ain't the University of Oregon. Iowa State is a good comparison, and anyone who knows anything about football would say Reilly is 10 times the coach McCarney is. Think if Dan won 8-10 games a handful of times at Iowa State and was hired by an NFL team as head coach. Or like a 60 year old Hayden (1990ish?).

Oregon State is probably the worst job in the Pac-12.

Take out your teeth and go to bed, Grandpa! ;)

Slow your roll this thread could be a huge fail yet. The fact here is they may have just hired a great fit. Would you take hope and change, over the same old tired politics. Unfortunately enough of you idiots believed in it to hire a freshman senator with no experience or record to run the wealthiest nation on gods green earth. Yet somehow you know for sure this is a bad hire. My apologies if you did not vote for the above, however in that case we should be in agreement. If this offends you then I'm talking to you. My hope is the bug eaters never recover, but to call it a dumpster fire without even one game coached is short sighted. Was Fran a dumpster fire hire when he lost to Cambell?

He will have a lot more resources at Nebraska, that is for sure. Of course, resources didn't help Brady Hoke win.

I don't see this as "disastrous, dumpster fire". It's risky, but it could play out like Bill Snyder to KSU.

Just thought of something.....EVERYTHING seems risky to Hawk fans because we know that our coaches have the looooooonest rope than that of ANY other school. Nebraska knows that if they make a mistake, they cut bait and move on.....not sit and worry if things could get worse. LOOOOOSER mentality!!!

Nebraska just fired a 9 win coach. So basically Mike Riley has to win 10+ games per year at Nebraska to keep his job. Mike Riley has won 10 in a single season once in his life.

How many wins did KF have prior to coming to Iowa? I'm not saying Riley will or won't win, but gauging future success by wins and losses at the ISU of the Pac 12 doesn't make sense to me.

Minny too for that matter.

Says the dbag shilling for a party that turned America into a dumpster fire, who voted for a ticket with the Wasilla Snow Queen on it. God some of you people are just irreversibly stupid. If you're going to talk smack at least come with a scintilla of credibility.

Your deleterious contribution to the gene pool is duly noted. Idiot.

I guess I struck a nerve. Just keep hoping for the change, aka hoax and change. Your presumption about my part affiliation is interesting, I was just pointing out a fact about human nature, and making an analogy. I'm sorry you were duped, I generally try looking at factoids before voting or hiring, but hey it's a free country. Honestly, I was hoping myself. BO would be a unifier at least , with transparity but it has gone in the opposite direction. Anyone with half a brain that could read had to know his politics were bad for the economy though. Mike Reilly has 2 things B.O. did not experience, and a record. So let's give him one term to get it done before announcing the dumpster fire.

You apparently know even less about economics than you do about politics or football.

Yet you feel compelled to opine.

Carry on. It's mildly entertaining.
