Miller & Deace Discuss Ferentz Presser & Mixed Messages

Steve and I discuss some points from last week’s Ferentz press conference that we feel fell flat…among them being less than supportive comments for CJB, an odd explanation of why his son has Running Game Coordinator in his title and another negative recruiting log that competitors can throw into the fire: http://hawkeyenation.com/football/miller-deace-ferentz-message-falls-flat

I listened. It was flat depressing. And this is not the time of the year to feel depressed about the upcoming season. Ouch.

Yeah, this was depressing, but it didn't change the way I feel about the program - I felt already that things are unofficially over for the Ferentz era. It's just a question of when it becomes official.

Bringing back KF for another year in 2015 only serves to let the program slip a little further by the time you DO make a change. I understand the buyout, but where is this program going to be by the time our AD feels the buyout is manageable enough to make a change?

The overall talent level on the Hawks is much more concerning to me than just the QB talk. With what Iowa lost to graduation, transfers, etc., we could be looking at a disastrous season this fall. Just look at the non conference schedule. Iowa could be 1-3 to start the season. (Iowa probably loses its first 3 games.) In conference, they will be at best 4-4. Optimistically, Iowa will be 5-7 this fall. That's not acceptable and changes should have been made before now so that we didn't end up in this situation.

"Really, the way we operate won't change an awful lot," Kirk Ferentz said.

IMO, this is one of the more troubling statements he made.

It reminds me of the old garbage in, garbage out analysis.

I believe that miss read this press conference could have been. I sense a quiet confidence with this team. They have a lot of players back on defense and special teams they have a winning formula with that. Even where starters were lost on defense there are experienced replacement each of the spots, I am most confident with the defensive tackle replacements. Iowa teams win with defense and special teams this team has that.

I agree. KF seems oblivious to the fact that the status quo doesn't seem to be working anymore.

If he had come out and said something to the effect of "We need to find a way to reinvent ourselves and do what it takes to get back to where we were 5, or even 10, years ago" then I might feel better about things, but we got none of that. Just "we're going to keep doing what we've been doing" - you know the saying about that definition of insanity, right Kirk?

I expect more of the same in 2015, if not worse due to talent level and losing some guys up front.

I think the tenor of the CJB comments both past and present combined with the continued coddling of Jake indicate that KF had no intention of ever playing CJB unless he had to. In this case his hand has been forced not only by CJB's family but the near mutiny of the fan base after last season. I think Barta had to say to KF look we can no longer sell tickets based on what you are putting out there so you have to put a fan favorite in CJB on the field. I do not think this came about this time by a gut feel.

CJB is a gun slinger and marches to the beat of his own drum. He has long hair and does not come off as a KF robot/corporate guy. I believe many of his teammates like him. All these things that make KF cringe.

I really wanted to hear about the depth at offensive line and some position battle at linebacker and defensive line.

The part where Deace says what Kirk's answers should be was the best part. It is just so simple and easy to say that, but Kirk is too concerned with trying to sound like sticking with Rudock wasn't a mistake.

The more i think about it, the more excited i get to watch CJ play. He throws an unbelievably good ball. The oline was so bad during the bowl game it was hard to judge but the accuracy on the passes he completed at the end of the game was something we rarely see at iowa.

I really hope CJ isn't forced to play Kirk ball this year. If that happens we have no chance at any excitement this season. The coaching staff needs to pound it into Kirk's stubborn *** head that a 50 yard intercepted pass is better than a 30 yard punt. We need big plays this year!

What really sucks is as untalented as we are this year, we are still more talented than ISU. It still seems lik3 a guaranteed loss because we have to be 2 touchdowns better that the opponent to overcome Kirk.

I see what you did there. Pretty subtle quoting Chris Williams before the Cyclone disaster of a season. I fear the Hawks will have a similar fate in 2015.

You hit on pretty much the Ferentz lines that I thought was quite odd.

As for Rudock being able to use the facilities and transfer within conference, here is my theory.

I think Ferentz is between a rock and a hard spot. I think he realizes the short leash or that his time is near the end. I think he's doing everything he can to put all his chips in & see if they will hit. All these instances are so odd & un-Ferentz like compared to the previous years, I think he's saving face with the media & doing what he can to buy time and maybe have one last shot.

I think he know's most people are clammering for Beathard, and even though it may not be his wishes felt he had to go with it. I think he had a sit down with Jake and probably explained this to him and that it's a business decision and probably felt horrible changing course. I think they probably worked out a sensible agreement & Ferentz prob said he'll support him to any measure and allow him to use the facilities out of respect. I think Ferentz's hand was forced either by public opinion, the Beathards, or both. I think this is why he's been so good to Rudock. I honestly think there is a mutual respect & Rudock realizes the situation and Ferentz's situation.

I had not known a clown had said that. I try to avoid anything clown related to keep from being contaminated by the stink.

I'm more optimistic than most on here too but not for those same reasons.... Last yrs team had as good 3 out of 4 D lineman that they've arguably ever had going back to the Clayborne and Ballard days anyway. And last year was what it was. We were gashed for huge plays alot and in crunch time just couldn't seem to make stops late in games. The LBs were beyond terrible last yr and who's to say there will be an improvement amongst that group with the replacement of Alston? That can be argued either way with no way of knowing for sure. Guess they can't be any worse...

On O I think the biggest question mark will be the Oline. Last yr they didn't run the ball very well at all and that was with two NFL guys on it. This group we just have question marks all over the place. Is Blythe maybe going to get some preseason love maybe other then that they gotta show us we can't assume they'll be good. The skill guys I like I think CJ will be good. But his performance will go hand in hand with how the line and running game goes it starts there....

Now on the positive note I think they should be winning games. That schedule again is hardly murderers row... So for that reason alone Iowa should be in games ugly or not and if they do stumble out of the gates that'll make me worry... With the off season we've had if Iowa looks bad the first game and then say loses at ISU that home game after that will be ugly as far as I think you'll see a half empty Kinnick... So I hope Iowa comes out clicking as best as they ever had to start a year... So we'll see first things first bring on Spring ball

"Yes, we want to win every game. But we are going to become the Bullies of the Big Ten, again. And if that means we lose some games because we're so intent on kicking our opponents a s s es, so be it. If that happens, that will my fault and not the players fault, because I can guarantee you that no one will see the field for a University of Iowa team unless they are ready to spend 60 minutes kicking *ss."

I would have gotten onboard with that statement if kfootball had chosen to say it. Instead we got: "Yeah, we'll be playing games this season. Are you gonna watch?"

It's been since 2011 since we've come out and whooped an opponent in our first game, and we won 34-7 against Tennessee Tech. Which 34 points for Iowa is really like 60 for other teams since KF goes into safe mode so often.

Otherwise we've come out extremely sluggish, and even lost (Northern Ill).

I just don't see how we get excited for this season when our coach comes out and says we'll keep doing the same things, and we have so many question marks.

Despite wanting CJB as our starter, we really don't know a lot about him besides a strong arm and ability to make plays down the field.

Can he progress from game to game and get stronger? Can he stay healthy (seems like that's a maybe right now), and who will step up to support him?

Odd to be in year 16 or whatever it is and we're in this state

The two words I keep coming back to - not mine, borrowed, but I think apropos - FAT CAT. I don't think it applies to the level of work effort from the coach, but to the mentality, i.e., it worked before, it can work again. However, eventually, the mice find a different route, and while your plan may work, it assumes the mice are going to keep coming in the same direction at the same frequency and you just have to keep doing what you've always done and never move, and all will be well. Problem is, over 10 years, the mice do find different routes and ways to get around, and if you're stuck in the same place, you're done.
