Miller & Deace Discuss Ferentz Presser & Mixed Messages

KF's problem is he keeps the horses in the stable. I am hoping CJ comes out slinging the ball like Favre. I would be perfectly fine with bad picks and cancel them out with the darts he has the ability to throw. At least then the offense will at least throw the ball down the field instead of checking down three times and punting. Throwing down field will also help the run game.

Iowa has the horses....Now they have a QB with the arm strength to at least get the ball to them.

Iowa has A horse. It takes a lot more than one or two players to be successful in football, and we don't have anywhere near enough to be thinking about championships. As for receiver, we've got Smith and that's about it. Some of the other guys can be pretty solid, but Smith is the only All-B1G type of player in the receiving corps. Out of the freshman class that got the hype this time last year, the best one is gone (Willies) and the second best is now a running back.

C.J. gives us our best chance to win. But that doesn't mean he gives us a good chance to win.

The idea that kfootball is allowing JR to continue using the facilities to work out, knowing that he is going to transfer, is simply odd at best. When this was first reported that JR was working out with graduated players (players that finished their eligibility and commitment with and to Iowa) my first reaction was to ask "why" would kfootball allow it? It occurs to me that this is possibly an example of the "double standard" many fans believe exists within Iowa's program. If you are a kirk ferentz man, you don't lose your position/status, even if a more talented and younger player comes in. Of course this is speculation, but the action to let JR continue to use the facilities logically leads, or lends credence, to that conclusion. I believe that this has made a huge impact on our recruiting. "Why go to Iowa and sit for 3 seasons when I'm already better or as good as the incumbent?" Think skill positions.

Let's not get stuck on the fact that we don't play UM in 2015. By allowing JR to go there (assuming that happens) the Iowa football program is actively allowing a conference opponent to get better. Having virtually no starting experience at qb, we allow them experience. They likely win more games because of it, which helps THEIR recruiting, and it allows them to setup their qb position on a future looking perspective. This is great for JR and UM, but not Iowa.

Edit: Saw this from a UM blog. Supports my thoughts about allowing JR to play for a conference opponent.

Touchdown passes always count for 6 points. Interceptions don't always count for points for the other team. I, too, would take a few more interceptions for more touchdowns. Let Beathard play, don't try to rein him in.

To add to this...even if an interception does lead to a touchdown, a punt might have led to one anyway.

Allowing Rudock to go to Michigan isn't going to significantly alter the differences between the two programs going forward. They were well on their way up once they hired Harbaugh, with or without Rudock this year.

Define significantly.

To me, it is significant to allow an opponent the opportunity to win more games than they might have. This would create even more momentum. To me it is significant to allow an opponent to redshirt specific players to allow them to mature; giving them more seasons as more mature players. It also allows flexibility in recruiting because they may no longer feel the "need" to sign a QB in 2016. However you slice this, it helps UM and not Iowa. That is significant. The degree to which it is significant is almost irrelevant.

Oh, so we're just going on symbolism, not anything of substance.

Your right from that perspective. From Ferentzs perspective he would probably say this is about what's best for JR and what he wants. He was a loyal foot soldier for KF for 4 years and put up with all that KF put him through as far as the rotating of them etc. So KF is "rewarding" him for a lack of a better word by letting him go where he wants. To Ferentz his days are numbered and he's not too worried about the big picture as much as he is helping out the kid that he obviously likes.

Seems like the link you posted reaffirms what most of us think. If JR starts at Michigan I think he has a big year which would prove the Greg Davis hire has been a disaster and Kirk's threats of throw a risky pass and it gets intercepted and you'll never play again philosophy. I think KF has scared Vandenberg and Jake so much they play like deer caught in the headlights. It takes a QB with a lot of confidence to get past that. Fortunately CJ has the confidence and there's no one behind him with experience. It could be the perfect storm.

Hawkfnntn, I feel it is a bad practice to allow any of your players transfer in-conference. Now, we'll have to allow any player transfer in-conference, or this will come across as favoritism or cronyism. You just don't help out your conference foes.

I wouldn't say your completely wrong.... The conference had a rule against it too they had to waive so they agree with you also to an extent. I think they are doing it just on a case by case deal. I mean Rudock is just the all American good kid wanting to be a doctor some day. It boiled down to Ferentz being ok with it cause if he denied it and Rudock went to the BIG to appeal they would have upheld it cause they have that rule against it for peats sake. So that's the why. If this was DJK or a kid like that Ferentz wouldn't have even lifted a finger for him. Didn't Iowa let Beautjer go to Illinois with no strings?

I know if basketball we got Uthoff and Okey from Wisky and Recker but tht was in a round about way. I don't think the same transfer rule applies to basketball does it?

It would be pretty cheap to deny JR the opportunity to have workouts. In defense of KF, no one including Rudock himself knew for sure where he was going until a few days ago. Also, it shows your current players and their parents that you have some class. I'm happy for JR and hope the best for him at Michigan. By most counts he is a good guy and he has earned respect from our program.

I completely agree with this. This is not a move you make in a competitive business. I understand Kirk feels he's serving JR's interests, but his greater responsibility is to the program. Placing one conference off-limits wouldn't significantly limit JR's options anyway, as a proven D-1 QB.

No, it is a little different. Bujer and Recker had to pay their own way to college. Kirt put a skirt on and bent over so that Jake could transfer within conference and still attend school for free without sitting out. I don't think I have ever seen this done before.

I don't understand why miller does these articles with a Michigan and isu fan. Never trust what the enemy says. If einstein was a clone, I wouldn't believe the theory of relativity cuz you never trust a clone. I don't even want the hear his perspective, it just poisons the well.
