Miller: Big Risk, Possible Big Reward with Hubbard

I'm all for giving people a second chances if they deserve it. He paid his debt. He's square with the house as one might say.

He's going to have his hands full. Road student sections are going to be rough. I hope he has thick skin.

Does anyone remember at guy playing college BB at age 26? I can think of a couple FB players (Wienke at FSU and a QB for Ok St I believe)

Settles was around 24 or so his last year. But I can't think of anyone older off the top of my head.

I'm sure BYU has had a kid or two.....People who serve in the military and decide to get out once their enlistment is up. Guys who decide to play minor league ball right out of high school.......Age wise if you do a little research you will probably come up with a few guys. The whole prison angle, well that's a little bit different, little more unique.

I'll go old school on you. Norris Coleman was a 24 year old freshman for Kansas State in the 1980's, because he spent 5 years in the Army.

I have to admit that I am nervous about this move. For 2 reasons.
#1. IC police arent going to cut any slack to an Iowa athlete. So I hope this guy has been made aware of that fact.
#2. If this blows up in Fran's face, it could set the program back another 5 years.
Its a precarious position for us.

I remember Jess playing at MSU and the crowd chanting, "Grandpa Settles." Was actually kinda humorous. The chants at Hubbard will be anything but humorous.

I will admit when I first read we were recruiting Hubbard I was surprised. But, that was just my initial reaction before I even knew anything else about him. This is the first Iowa recruit in any sport (that I know of) that has a history like this.

It sounds like he has kept his nose clean and that basketball had helped him stay on track. We all make poor decisions at some point in our lives. Yes, some decisions are more harmful than others but I do think Hubbard has shown he is serious about getting and keeping his life on track.

Yes, he has kept his nose clean except for when he was charged with assault this year. I understand they were dismissed but people making him into some kind of angel needs to stop.

Hubbard certainly seems to have his head on his shoulders. He has made tremendous strides, pulling himself up by the proverbial bootstraps since his incarceration. He is a new man. He also is jubilant to be a Hawkeye, more so than any recruit in recent memory. Hubbard really appreciates Fran and staff giving him the opportunity to play for Iowa in the Big Ten. He could step into one of the leadership roles easily with his real life experience and maturity.

I don't think he will be intimidated by obnoxious fans on the road. Or obnoxious fans at home either. He has faced worse.

Bottom line, Anthony Hubbard is now a Hawkeye and deserves all our support, same as Brommer, Archie, and Eric May, who will overcome his sophomore season, injury and all. He and the rest of Lick's last team have a year under Fran, learning a complex system, made all the more difficult because of the extreme contrast in coaching style. Eric is an essential factor to the team. His defensive expertise is necessary. Fran has righted the ship and we are on our way to return to the glory of the past. It's all Good.

haha Fran is rebuilding the right way! Screw going after guys that got caught smoking, we've got 26 yr old felons!!

I don't think he is much more of a risk then any other player. In the major conferences every player thinks they will play in the nba, even the 13th guy on the bench. With all the transfers and other drama at all schools it is hard to keep a straight face when calling them student-athletes. I think this is why it is so exciting when teams like Drake a few years ago or other mid-majors make a run with real student-athletes./end rant

Id rather have somebody who made a mistake at the age of 17(9yrs ago!) and has learned from it and turned his life around. You most likely didnt read his story because you truly cant describe him as just "a 26 yr old felon".

On the other hand we could have easily gone after KIDS who have made repeated mistakes(enough to be dismissed from teams) within the LAST YEAR.

My guess is when its all said and done the "26 yr old felon" will be a respected individual for his turn around and growth as a man.
