Mike Stoops Tidbit

I remember watching Stoops tirades and crying on the field about every call. I don't see KF going for that type of personality. Coaches that lose their cool like that need athletes that are much better than the opponents. This allows the coach to impose their will on the other team and beat them with bigger stronger faster kids. They tend not to be as good of a schemer or teacher of the game. Stoops is not what IA needs Nor will KF hire him. Stoops does not fit the bill
Kirk needs just that...some guy the players connect to on defense...a guy they are willing to give it all for. Have you seen the Pelini's in action. Not a Nebraska fan but their guys get it and give it for those two guys. Stoops won't be in the Head Coach role and whine and cry, he will be wearing his emotions on his sleeves...just what we need.

IA players will do this for Norm. Kirk will not allow one of his coaches running around making an *** out of himself and the IA program. He will be a distraction.

I think it is a mighty far stretch to assume that a coach would behave the same was as a coordinator as he would as a head coach.

When was the last time you saw coordinators drawing attention to themselves to the point that they were put on TV?

I think we will see some type of change in the off season. Kirk may not read message boards but I think even Kirk knows that something needs to be shaken up a bit. When there is this much talk and criticism (not just from message board posters, but from media as well) Kirk can't continue to turn the other way ... at least I don't think :) ...

This is just a general comment, and nothing to do with the Stoops and Iowa scuttlebut...

Yes, Stoops has been a nut job on the sideline as a head coach...and Iowa has not had those sort of antics on its sideline in the KF era.

But at practice, things get real, real heated. Phil Parker and Coach Kaz can flat go off...as can Kirk.

There is a lot of passion there...they just don't go ballistic on the sidelines during games, at least not in a physically demonstrative way...but having walked behind the bench a number of times last year while on the sidelines, I can tell you things are pretty heated...and former players have told me about practices.

Maybe he will, maybe he won't. However, coach does like mike. He knows what it is like to coach beside him. He is closer to the Stoop family than most realize.

I personally believe it is Norm's last year.

College should be about developing players and men for the future, not protecting the feelings of a coach who has outlasted his effectiveness.

I buy that this will happen. Maybe not until season is over, but for recruiting purposes, sooner than later. Perhaps at end of regular season, bowl or no bowl.

Norm has possibly given KF, a heads up and can help in making a coaching transition and in making his own personal health assessments, knowing someone of stoops pedigree is available. He probably wants to stick onboard at least until the actual big ten championship is out of reach at the very least, and why would you make a mid season change unless his health has seriously gone way south. All speculation.

Further it is no secret the love the Stoops families have for Iowa. No way do MS sideline antics carry over to a DC position when you're working for someone else. Wouldn't be surprised to hear of a MS siting at this or next weeks game. It could effectively be an adjustment that our program needs, and happen relatively seamlessly for Ferentz, given the decisions that would need to be made if Norms health dictates that.

I hope this becomes reality. Norm did a great job as DC until the past couple of years. He refuses to adapt to his opponent and teams have figured this out. I also believe we need a DC to be ON THE FIELD with the players. He needs to be in their ear... Again, I wish Norm the best and understand his health has been an issue, but it's time for a change in my opinion.

wow...I was dismissing all the rumors...but for him to say "I'm probably going to be a defensive coordinator..." hmm...very very interesting.

I endorse this post...Kaz and Parker can go nuts...We used to have tickets right behind where it always seemed like Parker would stand. and if a Dback got burned...he would hear it for a LONG time.

I like that intensity from assistants. and even coordinators to a point....I feel that head coaches should be stoic and even keeled....but assistants need to have a real invested connection to players.

I agree. When you're not numeruno, you tend to lay the weeds a bit more and not draw attention to yourself or outshine the head guy. I don't think it's a stretch.

also, why does everyone assume that since a guy was a HC at a BCS school, that his only next possible move will be a HC, when he was FIRED at his last job? I think DC is very logical step in MS's career path, if even for short-term say 3 yrs at another BCS school.

It took Dan MacCarney a few years to get around again and he's at N.TX and IMO he did as well as you can at ISU and every AD knows that. After DM was fired wasn't he a position coach, then DC, then back to N.TX?

The only way Stoops comes to Iowa is if we make him the coach in waiting and that is crazy talk.
College FB has plenty of former head coaches who have moved on to coordinator positions without any "coach in waiting" promises. Do we have to go over this list again?

Besides, with his lack of success as a HEAD COACH, Mike Stoops has no bargaining power to make this type of demand.

Good point. Some guys are better in the booth, some are better on the sidelines. Norm is one of the guys who did very well on the sideline. Now he had better players than too.

The D Coordinator is one of the three most important people in a football program. We need one who is a recruiter plain and simple.
