Former Arizona Wildcats coach Mike Stoops: 'My heart is still with these players'

Found this article posted yesterday. Not that it really reveals anything about his future but one point coincided with some of the chatter going around last week.

Stoops, 49, says his next likely coaching step will be as a college defensive coordinator, which could then lead back into a head coaching position. "My passion is coaching defense," he said.
"That is where my heart has been. As a head coach, it's hard to be everything to everybody. I have certainly enjoyed coaching defense and the intimacy you have with a group of guys that you don't really have as a head coach."

Mike Stoops would be a great get on so many different levels. Go get him!!!

It does make one go...hmmmmm....I love Norm but if he was ready to step aside,I understand...and would be interested in Mike Stoops.

I think it's very likely that Mike Stoops was in contact with Ferentz. That may be as far as it will ever go but I doubt these rumors just popped up out of nowhere.

More often than not, these rumors have some basis in substance.
I mean, KF said he was going to call Stoops after he was fired,so those conversations could be on-going.

I agree, most would say they want to be a head coach again and not take a step back and be a coordinator before becoming a head coach again unless something was already in the works to be a coordinator.

Is this like one of those Todd Lickliter, Steve Alford, Reggie Theus, Bruce Pearl kinda threads?

I agree, especially a former head coach in a BCS conference. Maybe if you were coaching in the MAC or Sunbelt.

it could be he is better suited as a DC, plus maybe he realized he is better suited to be back at that position, at the very least he can now move forward and not have to look back and say "what if", he got his chance at a HC's job and now has found he is happier back as a DC

Come on home Mike. We could use a little more passion on our sidelines. We also certainly use a guy that can walk into someone's living room and sell them on our program unlike Norm. Let's just do it soon and make the transition smoother as this season is a wash.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

Especially after at least a dozen posters here scoffed that Stoops would never take a non-HC job. Which was a silly statement even before hearing the quote above.

I would put money on it that he gets an invite to IC.

The only way Stoops comes to Iowa is if we make him the coach in waiting and that is crazy talk.

KF's staff could use an injection of people trying to get to the next level of coaching. Stoops fit the bill.

I do agree that you need a balance of long time coaches and guys looking for a stepping stone. Ferentz has a god awful coaching tree because he never hires young aggressive coaches who go on to better things.

I remember watching Stoops tirades and crying on the field about every call. I don't see KF going for that type of personality. Coaches that lose their cool like that need athletes that are much better than the opponents. This allows the coach to impose their will on the other team and beat them with bigger stronger faster kids. They tend not to be as good of a schemer or teacher of the game. Stoops is not what IA needs Nor will KF hire him. Stoops does not fit the bill

Speaking of crazy talk.

It isn't like someone ever left Iowa to be a head coach.

that's a helluva thought Hayden's coaching tree next to Kirk's.... just sayin

(and for the record I think Norm has been a tremendous coach)
