Mike Gesell is the problem

2-9 shooting and 4 points in what 30 minutes??? 4 points from the bench deserves blame to but they aren't 4 year starters playing 3/4 a game either.

So Gessell shot very close to what the team shot overall, about 30%. If not for Jok. We literally might have been sub 30%. Won't win doing that...ever.

Gessell hasn't been great, but he doesn't get all the blame.

Gesell had four steals tonight and has one turnover in the last THREE games combined. Not the problem at all. In fact he was the only glue that held us in the game when Uthoff was out. Jok his a few shots but he turned it over sloppily for every shot he hit, so they cancelled each other out in the first half. And even Gesell's missed shots tonight, we scored off three of the rebounds with buckets or free throws. He needs to be more aggressive, but forcing threes like Uthoff has been doing isn't the answer. Anyone who's watched Trimble for Maryland the last few games should feel lucky to have Gesell. Neither can shoot, but at least one plays D and doesn't give the ball away.

Its really not his fault. He should not be in the position he's currently in. He should be a backup PG getting spot duty but instead he's a starter thats logging heavy minutes. The blame goes to the man who hasn't found someone more qualified to start on a B1G roster.

Bingo!

Gesell had three assists and four steals, pretty good stats as far as they go. He is not the problem but maybe not the solution at crunch time, either. Would be nice if he could he a few more shots, for sure. Equally concerning is the fact that bench play has nearly disappeared of late but not for lack of effort. In fact, the overall team effort tonight was excellent. They played hard, just not well when it really mattered. Wisconsin looked really strong team, very well coached, and way better than MSU looked earlier in the season. Who wouldda thought?

3 assists??? I promise you that I could get that many with 30 minutes with Jok and Urhoff on the floor.

Gesell has never understood, during his 3-and-some-odd-years at Iowa, that when he drives to the basket and tries to throw up a layup, odds are it will get rejected.

He would do better to kick the ball out to find an open shooter or find a cutting player through the lane. The amount of times he gets blocked is frustrating

The entire team shot like crap. He was solid defensively and still made some good passes that lead to points. Blaming this loss on him is completely ********.

While I mostly agree, I'd take Trimble overall. Mike takes wayyyy to much blame on here, but Trimble is a stud, although struggling lately.

I know we shot a little above average in the earlier part of the season, but now we are just plain terrible with the exception of Jok. We had so many good looks late in the game to extend our lead or swing momentum and we missed every single one. You would literally think someone shooting blindfolded would have the same amount of luck. If we can stop being so damn unlucky with missed shots it will help cover up some of our other deficiencies.

Being solid defensively and making some nice passes would be ok for a young player. He's a ******* 4 year starter

The crowd was strong early but our play didn't feed it. MG dribbles too much, Uthoff is settling for jumpers, Uhl has become the tar pit of the offense...it bogs down when the ball gets to him and the ball stops moving around, Ellingson is giving us nothing (Oglesby at least played smarter and better defense) and the passing and ball movement in general has disappeared.

Aside from execution problems, this team needs two things out the players. First, it's great that nothing seems to phase Uthoff, but it clearly does and he needs to show some emotion. I know he cares and hates losing but the rest of the team needs him to act like he gives a damn. Second, someone (Adam?) needs to take control of this team on the floor and get in people's faces. If I was busting my butt like Woodbury did tonight and others weren't playing tough enough, I'd let them hear about it.

Gimme Clemmons, Jok, Baer, Wagner and Woody when it's time to grind.

You guys wanna act like we're talking about some role player... 4 yeR starting PG... And probably the ONLY player under Fran who hasn't seen significant improvement on a yearly basis.

I'll admit it's a team game and there's never a loss that falls on an a single individuals shoulder but I stand behind Mike's play being the difference.

Gesell not the problem but would be more popular if he could score more points. Utoff foul problems and extended bench time kept him out of the flow while Jok can't be expected to be the only offensive scoring threat with JU on the bench. Bench play not reliable and that's a growing concern. This team has several holes that get magnified by inconsistent play. Season's not over but you wonder what it will take for the team to get back to playing like it had earlier in the season. There's still time!

Mike is the same guy he was as a freshman. The only thing he can be expected to do is limit turnovers. You certainly can't expect an offensive output beyond the minimum. You can argue whether he's a bust or he hasn't been coached up, but there's no reason to expect anything beyond who he is.

I'm not going to debate you on this. You and the others blaming Gesell for the loss tonight are acting stupid.

I don't blame him for the loss tonight. But he changes the way teams play defense because he is so inept on offense. He won't shoot the ball which is a good because he can't shoot the ball. He is really quick with the ball but it does the team no good because he can't finish at the rim and he can't pass very well. He's a top 10 assist guy because of the amount of games he plays. He's a 4 year starter and he has never once wowed the crowd with a pass. If you want to argue it's because he's smart and doesn't want to turn it over that's fine. But nothing happens when he has the ball. It's tough to win when your point guard can't shoot and can't pass.

My feeling is he is not a scorer and is a PG. That's fine in college BB. Many teams have been elite with just a PG that can handle the ball and play some D. My problem is when your PG is just for ball handling, your center is just for a big body and no O, and your off guard is mainly for defending with some slashing built in....you are left with 2 people who can score. No knock on Clemons, think he is doing quite well this year, but knocking down jumpers falls on 2 people and its quickly becoming known to double hedge those two every time and leave everyone else alone.

A 6'1" guard who can't shoot and not a defensive stopper? Yes, that is a massive problem. Little too late now. If only ulis came. If ands or buts as they say!
