Mike Gesell is the problem

The big underlying problem question in that scenario is, could an incoming frosh play with the moxie and consistency of JBo? I doubt it. But a 4* recruit at PG would still get a lot of minutes.

That another player can't play with the moxy that JBo did as a Frosh or will as a soph? Just askin the question. If a player of equal intangibles and ability AND could play D, would he get priority over JBo? Now theoretically speaking, if Isaiah Thomas came in, would Fran start him over JBo?

No. He would start him over Moss.

There isn't a magic PG anywhere, be it transfer, be it a HS player, that is going to come to Iowa and take Jordan's PG spot. It's his for the next 3 years. I would love a solid backup tho that could get a year Jordan's senior season to get a year in the system and be ready to take over.

The intangibles of JB are more rare than a 4* player. Not something you can really plan for. If Isaiah Thomas came in, sure. But if you think that's a possibility, I've got some swamp land I'd like to sell you.

Just wonderin if Fran would do that...that's all.

I think there are a lot of us who conflate having a scorer play pg as being a "great" pg. You definitely need to have a pg that can score. But the primary responsibilities of a pg is running the offense, being able to break down the defense with dribble penetration and playing defense to prevent the opposing pg from doing that. JBo is a high level scorer, who I believe could be an elite shooter and scorer, and he is a good pg; but I don't think he'll ever be an elite pg. If a potential elite pg comes along, if I was Fran, I'd take him, play him and move JBo to SG for half his minutes.

There are two ways to break down a defense. With dribble penetration and with passing. He is poor at one (for now) and is already elite at the other. And I don't understand how people are still saying he needs to move to shooting guard, like that will somehow help his defense. If he is better off defending the shooting guard, he can defend the shooting guard and still play point guard.

We have no problem scoring with Bohannon at point. The one argument you can make is end of shot clock and game clock situations. I think our best bet there is to run a play to get Cook in good position and have Bohannon get him the ball, like at the end of the TCU regulation. If you are dead set on having a dribble drive in those situations, why not just have Moss do it?

The thing is, Bohannon has set the bar pretty high on what it will take to beat him out. You can't just find a guy who is good at penetration and give him the point, because he will either be worse at everything else or be a 5 star who we probably will never get. I'm not willing to give up Bohannon's shooting and passing for better dribble penetration. And Bohannon's defense is irrelevant to the discussion because his offense is too good to keep him off the floor, and when you're on the floor, you have to defend someone.

So, if you had a different pg that could dribble penetrate and JBo on the floor at the same time, and they were on the same side of the floor, that'd be a tough decision for the defense on whether to leave JBo to stop the dribble drive, giving JBo a wide open 3, or to allow the dribble drive...particularly, if you then throw in Cook standing underneath waiting for a dime on a dribble drive.

So, that scenario would be a horrible one for opposing coaches to defend. With JBo as a pg and not having the ability to dribble drive, you aren't as dangerous.

Sure you are. Have Moss drive and kick to Bohannon. Unless you're saying having better players makes you better, I agree with that. But that's apples to oranges. If you compare apples to apples, I think if you got a driving point guard that was equally as good as Moss to replace in the lineup, we wouldn't necessarily be a better team. I want the ball in Bohannon's hands as much as possible. Good things happen when the ball is in his hands.

PC, I really like Moss and he flashed last season. He's our best open court player, in my opinion. What I didn't see him flash a lot of is the dribble drive. He did some, but he certainly wasn't unstoppable. But, that is still beside the point. I'm talking about getting a legit pg that can dribble drive; you have Moss and JBo split mins at sg and JBo and new guy split minutes at pg. We do not have depth at pg and need one asap, anyway. As much as I am rooting for CW and like his length and defense, he hasn't shown he can run the offense or score, with consistency.

Word is that Daily is now 6'7" and maybe still growing. I see him as a SF, not a SG/PG. We both agree on one thing, get the ball in JBo's hands as often as possible. I just think that once it is in his hands, it's a shame for it to leave his hands, unless it's a shot.

So you want to upgrade our guard talent. I agree with that. I want to upgrade every position on the court. The one thing I don't agree with is we need a different point guard with a different skill set for the sake of change. Our offense was really good last year once Bohannon got comfortable. He could easily be a 14 and 7 guy this year.

When he was on last year, he was creating something almost every time down the court. If you get a chance, rewatch the Maryland game from last year. He was in the groove both shooting and passing, to the point where the Maryland defense had no chance.
