Mike G Best PG on Floor

When Mike G is up against supposed great point guards he really steps up his game. He seems to play with some extra energy. Look what he did against Paige, Russel and now Tremble. Fran needs to put more pressure on Mike as he seems to respond I think he had like 9 assists today and is now do a great job of finishing at he basket or penetrating and opening up his teammates.

Also, posters please stop responding to Fairfax's posts. I am tired of seeing his posts on our boards. Like crabs if we ignore him he will go away. Better yet we can keep having discussions around him and win.

Very tired of Fairfax. Never respond to his posts.

Mike G is killin' it lately. Keep it up!

Mike played well but let's not get silly. Tremble was better with one eye.

To the victor go the spoils. Trembles team lost badly and his shooting preentage and assist to TO was not so good. So froma pg perspective MG wins. This is not a homer thing just facts.

Again, stop being silly. Are you arguing better team or better player? He was not the better player but he led the better team.

Gesell wasn't better than Trimble, but he has tended to play at his best when he's going against top-flight PG's this year. And his best is pretty good.

That dunk he missed was suspect. How tall is he? I will be here through your CBI tournament appearance.

Trimble was better at splitting double teams and hitting long bombs but Mike was better overall running the hawk offense. If Trimble gets really good at setting up his mates over the next couple years he will be very good.

Oh this is the Fairfax you folks are talking about. Yep what a know nothing troll, just trying to start trouble and has no useful info to post.

Fairfax, you can see what happens to really good teams like Maryland halfway into a big 10 season.

You should just go back to watching a couple good teams in the Mo Valley.

Its crazy comparing some of his good games to his bad. Lately seems like he has been more confident with his handles attacking with ball. Not just predictable full sprints to the rim but changing his pace and uses cross overs more than he did last season. Cant say i was too impressed with his back up though, clemmons made some silly passes and defense was only average.

There is one good team in the big ten and Maryland isn't one of them. There are more MVC teams in the Top 15 than the big ten. Beating Maryland is really not that big of a deal.

Mike Gesell tore Maryland apart tonight. He is clearly not the scorer that Trimble is, but that is beside the point. Iowa absolutely buried a pretty good Maryland team (rated at #16) and a good share of the credit goes to Mike. BTW, when Sapp was assigned to Trimble tonight, he very nearly held him scoreless. Not only that, Timble could not even pass effectively...it looked like Anthony was glued to his body. That was a major topic of conversation in my section at the game today...we were just amazed at Sapp's quickness. Yes, he does make some mistakes with the ball and is not a real shooting threat. But this is a game where a player who knows his role can be a very valuable asset. That would be Sapp.

Look Dude! Tremble is the better talent no argument there, however he scored cause he had to. When you rely on a PG to score to keep you in games that is a problem. Not being silly, pointing out that MG steps it up against better competition, and yes for today MG was better ie. exactly what Iowa needed. Tremble jacked up alot of shots scored and also made quite a few mistakes. Is MG better than Tremble/ Marcus Paige talent wise--no is Bronson Kenig--SP? all that physically talented? No he isn't but he is an extremely smart player who plays his role to a T and is pretty darn successful in it. It is not always the physical talent that makes a player great. So in conclusion I am saying MG has what it takes for Iowa to be a winner--smart--athletic enough--and in the right situation--those are the elements required, just ask Malcom Gladwell. Also--he proobably has his 10,000 hrs in by now.

They beat your team Ames in KCMO. Niang cried all game.

Anyone who wants to argue who had the better game between Trimble and Gesell...let's look at the stats.

trimble - 20 pts, 3 assists, 0 rebounds, 1 steal, 4 turnovers

gesell - 8 pts, 9 assists, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 3 turnovers

if we just focus on points then it is obvious. But I like to combine assists with points. Every assist accounts for at least 2 points for another player...so I like the points they had a hand in creating. By my math 9 assists would be at least 18 points plus 8 points means Gesell accounted for a part of at least 26 points. Trimble had 3 assists, so at least 6 points and 20 points himself. That means he accounted for a part of 26 points...looks like a wash for me. Then I look at their ability to manage their team and the game and that was definitely Gesell that has the edge.

Here are Mike's assists according to ESPN's play by play.

First Half:

17:40
0-3Peter Jok made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
14:24
2-9Gabriel Olaseni made Layup. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
12:58
2-13Jarrod Uthoff made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
9:19
3-20Peter Jok made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
7:59
5-24Adam Woodbury made Layup. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
5:16

12-28Jarrod Uthoff made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
2:05
13-34
Aaron White made Dunk. Assisted by Mike Gesell.

Second Half:
17:49 21-44Aaron White made Layup. Assisted by Mike Gesell.
1:41
55-69Aaron White made Dunk. Assisted by Mike Gesell.

5 Assists for 2pt FGs = 10 points
4 Assists for 3pt FGs = 12 points
Total = 22 points

Throw in the 8 Mike scored himself and you have 30 points that he was responsible for. That's some pretty solid work by the Hawkeye point guard.

Was Mike the better PG on the floor tonight? That depends on your definition. If it's on who did better at running the offense and keeping teammates involved that was Mike. If it was who took it upon himself to score the ball and try and keep his team in the game because Wellz was turning the ball over left and right, that was Trimble.

I liked what I saw from both guards. Mike has taken his game to the next level the past few games and has been playing with confidence. He could be really good if he can get his shooting arm healed up and start hitting 3 pointers. Defenses have really sagged off of him because of the injury and he still finds a way to get into the lane and either finish at the rim or find an open guy. Mr. Trimble has a bright future ahead of him, he battled is *** off out there today. For a freshman he has had a tremendous year and will only get better as he gains experience.

Solid work on the stats--How many shots did it take Melo to get those 20? Have to look at points per possession as well, that is a big part of what a pg controls. Sometimes a terrible shot can be as good as a T.O.. Withe stats being similar if Melo goes 12-20 from the floor and MG goes 4-4 those are tough to compare. Again, no argument Melo is a solid player, just was less than MG positionaly today. Main point is MG plays his best against the best competition it seams.

He played well today and hopefully he'll develop the skill to consistently perform at an elevated level that he's capable of playing without pressure from the coach. I'd just like to see him have a go to shot when the clock is running out and it's up to him to create a shot for himself. It seems he often gets smothered at times in those situations by taller more athletic guys driving to the hoop or attempting to pull up. Maybe a step back type shot similar to what John Stockton had.
