Michigan loss is ALL on Lickliter!!!

OK, maybe some of my comments are venting frustration. Not ALL of it is to blame on Lick, some falls on players shoulders too...and that damn Hightower!!!

But I will tell you that when my college team was in the post season we were in a eerily similar situation and were coached to do what I stated should have occurred...and we WON so maybe it is my perception of what didn't occur knowing it could have been a different outcome.

Iowa must go 4-0 to end the season to avoid the dubious achievement of the program's first ever 20 loss team. LET'S GO HAWKS, 4-0!!!

ya because the coach we had before him was great down the stretch- we never blew leads or lost games-

i aint trying to defend Lick, i really aint- same problems team had 4 or 5 years ago are same problems now-

guess im just hoping for the best cuz we all know that minus another huge set of transfers this is our coach(if key key players transfer again then i am all for time-2-move on) but if not and what we got and what is coming in- there is room for hope-

atleast i got to hope that is all i meant by nething i've said :)

You are right, Alford failed in these situations many times. Perhaps this is why I was so furious at Lickliter. If this was Alford again, most of us would be hammering Alford and be in agreement but I blame Lick (have cooled down) and all of you are hammering me! What's the difference when Alford did this?

Sorry pal, when you have our talent, Eddie Hightower reffing the game, guys missing some FTs down the stretch and a miracle 3 pointer in the waning seconds, I don't know of anything the coach can do to win the game. Them's the breaks.

I actually don't mind Hightower, it's Valentine I can't stand. And he has done a bunch of Iowa games this year. He also made the terrible non-call on Fuller's final drive.

Yeah seemed to me fouls were mostly helpful towards Iowa. Lot of no calls vs. iowa while hawks got a lot of favorable calls.

Anyone know why cougil didnt play?

Fouling or not fouling in that situation...

You are dumb. Foul with 13 seconds left? That's a terrible idea. Sims shot that ball with 8 seconds left. That's too much time left and we weren't in position to foul at that point. 6 seconds or so and you can foul a guy without risking free throws, yes do it. Too many calls went Sims way down the stretch. Back to back 3 point plays on questionable at best calls. This one hurts, but to put blame squarely on the coach is dumb. Payne and Fuller each missed critical free throws down the stretch.

is in the eye of the beholder. There's a good argument to be made either way. But it was inexcusable that Sims got such a wide-open shot. Flat-out inexcusable. You have to be overplaying-shading men on the perimeter on that possession. You CANNOT let the opponent get an unguarded 3 there. If they cut backdoor and score, so be it, but at least you make them run time off the clock to do so.

Of course losing is always on the players, and to some degree the coach. The players have to play. But coaches can help. I was yelling at the TV when Lickliter opted for Bawinkel over Brommer when Cole fouled out. Brommer is the only reasonable matchup for Sims in that situation.

you are right bro- aint much difference- guess maybe getting use to losing-

and that is very sad

like u said in post before that 1- need to go 4-0 Go Hawks- miracles can happen

Calls go both ways, but we just remember the one's that go against us. Fuller fouled Simms on the 3 that forced OT and that didn't get called. We had a chance to foul with 9 seconds left and didn't. The announcers sure thought it was a mistake not to foul. Doesn't mean you have to agree with the decision, but it was an option.

Also, there is no way we should have been inbounding the ball to Payne. You have to get that ball to Gatens.

Overall, the Hawks fought hard tonight and that's a tough loss. IMO, it's are unwillingness to try a different defense from time to time to at least make someone else beat us besides Simms every time we play them. We almost single handedly make that guy an all-american.

But Brommer had 13 minutes... (not that I think he did terrible)

Brommer is taller than Cougs I guess. Cougs would have struggled against Simms so I think Brommer was the probably the more logical choice. Who knows. Lick's substitution methods are strange sometimes.

Well said! I hope for Iowa's sake Simms is gone next year!!!

You are all wrong. It is George Bush's fault.

(obviously referring to young Georgie Bush of Keota, sitting with his mom behind the basket, who distracted Cully Payne on his last free throw)

Has anyone been able to figure out why Bawinkel was in at the end of the game when he fouled Sims?

I don't have a major problem with the way Lickliter coached this game...other than I cannot figure out why Bawinkel would have been in the game. I also think that Michigan would have more of a gripe about the officiating than we did. I thought we were hammering Sims all game long and not getting called for anything along with other various travel calls, etc. that we seemed to be getting away with.

This is a disappointing loss...but these things happen and for the most part everything that went down was just the normal progression of the game other than Bawinkel fouling Sims after he was clearly beaten.

I'll feel like an idiot if I'm wrong and that foul wasn't called on Bawinkel...but he had no business on the court anyway.

HawkCP - you are correct, Wink fouled Sims on that play. Coach said on the post game that Wink was trying to foul Sims earlier (on the floor, before the shot) once he was switched up on him. I am hoping the switching of all screens is changed up a bit.

Yeah, I caught in the huddle before Cullys free throws he clearly said "I'm only going to make you put one of these in that should be good".

Aaron Fuller also wants to know why his 30 points and 13 rebounds don't qualify as game changing.
Because in crunch time...you know OT. We got the ball to Gatens not Fuller. This team does not have a guy who can create his shot at anytime against anything. To me that is a difference maker...did you see some of the shots the Michigan duo put up in crunch time??? This staff needs to get one...and next year there is not that guy...and one possibly two rides the next year. Hell even Settles, Murray, Bobby and a host of B10 announcers have said the same thing...we have a nice collection of role players.

Who are you referring too with that statement?

Perhaps it should have been worded "lack of talent". No offense.

When you lose, at home, to a mediocre ball club, when you have them on the ropes.....

When will enough be enough? Each game gets more painful.

And, yes, AZMess, I watched.

Some of it.

After all, American Idol was on and its Hollywood Week Part 2!

Anytime you blow a 5 point lead with 20 seconds to go at home there is a lot of blame to go around. About 30 things had to happen for Michigan to win that game and they did. Its sickening. The only thing i didnt understand from Lick was having Bawinkel in the game at the end. The guy is the definition of worthless and that foul on sims was really dumb.

It isnt Lick's fault that Payne missed a free throw and sims hit a ridiculous shot with Fuller right in his grill. I guess Iowa couldve fouled but with the way the game was breaking Michigan wouldve still found a way to win.

We are all sick of losing but there were more positives from last night than negatives. Young teams tend to lose close games (unless you have John Wall or Derrick Rose on your team)
