Michael Kemerer Big 10 Wrestler of the Week

Kemerer Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa senior Michael Kemerer has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Kemerer climbed to the top of the 174-pound national rankings following a pair of wins over the weekend, including an 11-6 decision against then-top-ranked Mark Hall of Penn State on Friday, and a 13-3 major decision against No. 23 Layne Malczewski of Michigan State on Sunday.

Kemerer’s win against Hall helped No. 1 Iowa defeat No. 2 Penn State, 19-17.

The Big Ten honor is the third of Kemerer’s career, and the third for Iowa this season. Austin DeSanto earned the award Dec. 3 and Alex Marinelli was recognized Jan. 3.

The top-ranked Hawkeyes return to action Saturday at No. 22 Michigan. The dual is televised on BTN.

I don't know if Kemerer can keep this up through the end of the season (which means he'd have to beat Mark Hall two more times) but if he did, not only should he be the comeback wrestler of the year (if there is such an award), but even on a team that already has Spencer Lee, doing what he has done should give him consideration for national wrestler of the year. WOW! Has he been impressive, especially recently.
