Men's BB Talent reminds me of Football's

I really dont know, sometimes I thought I was really ready and played like ****, sometimes I thought I was gunna play like **** and played great.

I think its more about effort than anything. some days you are going to feel better than others, you just have to fight as hard as you can.

agree, that it is about effort, focus, concentration, and execution, not about fiery knute rockne speeches, I still feel that the Gophers and BlueJays were more ready to compete at a higher level than Hawks but you made some excellent points. If yesterday was the best the Hawks can play we are in for a long year, regardless of who shoots the ball better, the Hawks effort on defense and rebounding stunk!

To my knowledge, ISU and McDermott never even offered him a scholly. That is the only reason I thought it was odd we never offered him. If ISU had, then yeah, no brainer he'd play for his dad. But he was signed with UNI so until his dad got fired, he wasn't playing for him and we could have offered him. He might dislike Iowa or have said that, but I'd think having a chance to play in the Big 10 vs. playing at UNI might have changed his mind about that. Just a little amazed that a kid with his talent was never offered by a major conference school. Not amazed he's playing for his dad, just find it interesting we never even offered. Not like Lick was bringing in 5 stars and overlooked him. Far and away the best all around player on the court yesterday.

Oops. I stand corrected.

I remember hearing that McDermott did not really want his kid playing under him at ISU. I am not sure if McDermott knew his time was limited at ISU and did not want his son to be signed and have to deal with his dad being fired. I am not sure if his dad though his son was a better fit at the time for a good mid major program with a coach who would do a great job of developing him as a player. I don't know why Greg never offered his son while he was the head coach of ISU.

I am not sure why no one on Lickliters staff offered Dough. It does not hurt to offer the kid, hell didn't Iowa offer Harrison Barnes knowing they had zero chance of signing him?

I bet if Fran was around he would have at least thrown out an offer to Doug McDermott.

Maybe it just shows how inept Licks staff was... Guess they were more interested in Zach McCabe at the time as those two play the same position.

If the OP honestly believes that the problem with Iowa is that they have talent and are not motivated, then I have to believe yesterday's game was the first college basketball game he has seen in his life.

All of that is easy to say in hindsight, but it wasn't like Iowa and ISU were the only guys to whiff on McD. In addition to Creighton and UNI, his offers were Green Bay, Drake, Indiana State, Loyola, Milwaukee, San Diego, and Central Florida. He was a 6'7", 195-pound power forward without great athleticism who some people suspected was made to look better than he was by the presence of Harrison Barnes. Iowa fans would have had a fit if Lick had offered him (especially since we already had Cody Larson at that position). And Coach McD, already on the hot seat, would have had to have had huge, huge cajones to offer his son a scholarship when there wasn't any other major conference interest. I know that Doug McD is 100x the player John Lickliter was, but I'm guessing that watching the adventures of L'il Lick didn't make his dad real eager to step into that particular bear trap.

A few things, here, guys. First, we will see Creighton again in the tourney. My preliminary bracket has us as a 4 seed and them as a 5 seed so we will play in the second round (recall the last time we played Creighton in the tournament, Alford crushed them and I think we will do the same this year). Second, the general consensus on the game chat Spank was leading was that McDermott will be a lottery pick, so we shouldn't be too worried about him going off on us. I think the tape we got on McDermott will help get us ready for Sullinger.

Well that explains being down by 15+ points for the majority of the game. I'm just going to brush this loss off to "Cartwright was sick".

They certainly got their butts handed to them, but I don't think one can generalize too much from this game. The Jays were hitting everything, and Iowa was hitting nothing. Early in the game, Iowa missed a ton of shots in a row, and the game got out of hand early. I don't necessarily think the game would go that way if they played again.

Iowa will struggle this year, but I don't think that this game indicates that they will always be this bad. They had a bad game. Didn't they shoot around 50% from the FT line? I don't believe they'll perform that badly again.

I'm an optimist, I guess. The talent isn't there yet, but they are getting better on the whole.

The players as a team now know what they need to do. Now whether they can do it is another story. But they do now know they are not as good as their 25 and 30 point blowouts indicated. They now know that if they are going to win games against good competition they will have to out hustle the opponents and work their tails off. And even then it might be good enough...

But the bottom line is that all the players have to be on the same page and all the players have to show equal hustle and effort or this Iowa team just is not going to do much.

Actually I love watching college basketball, I know that you are much smarter than almost everyone else on this board, I love the way you rip anyone else that has an opinion different than you, but if you honestly feel that the Hawkeyes came out and played hard and with emotion then we watched different games. This is the same team, excluding Cole, that beat an excellent Purdue team last yr, Creighton came out with a chip on their shoulder and we came out flat as a pancake, they got every loose ball, out rebounded us, play twice as hard as we did on defense, Creighton may be better than us but not by 30 points, We have more talent this yr than in the past five years, from day one I have been predicating 16 wins and maybe an NIT bid if we are lucky, my whole point was the same point Jon makes about the football team, when they play hard and execute well they have a chance to be successful, one game doesnt make a season and hopefully they have learned their lesson

keep the insults to yourself and try to respect someone else's opinion once in awhile

I didn't insult you, and I respect plenty of other opinions. Just not yours. Yours is bad.

Creighton beat us because they have much better players, not because we came out flat. They got to loose balls because they're faster. They out rebounded us because they're bigger and smarter. They shot 55% because we couldn't defend them. This is the same team that beat Purdue, but it is also the same team that has weak depth and no speed on the perimeter, except this year, we don't have a center either.
