Memo to the National League. The Chicago Cubs mean business.

Not true. There have been acres of empty seats this year, especially earlier in the season before schools let out and vacations started and whatnot. Home games in September will be sparsely attended because the games won't matter.

Over the past 20 years, what has their attendance looked like? That is what I was getting after. They have loyal and true followers.

The MLB playoffs are a crap shoot. They won back to back division titles in '07-'08 and had the best record in the majors in '08 so they have had good teams.

I agree. I'm not saying they don't have a decent front office...but those fans deserve better (and I hate the Cubs).

If you want to use 1990 to now, probably not very good. The Cubs were terrible for most of the 90's, but people started to show up in 1998 to watch Sammy Sosa and a Cubs team that eventually won the Wild Card. After that they were terrible in 1999, 2000, were in first place as late in August in 2001, were terrible in 2002, got a big spike with Dusty in 2003, had packed houses most every day in 2004 and 2005, were terrible in 2006, and you know how they've been since then.

The notion among non-Cub fans that they sell out every single game regardless of the teams performance is nothing more than a myth.

But attendances in comparison to other teams? Pretty darn good. They were 6th in the 90's and 4th in the 00's. And I guess I don't know this, but isn't their capacity quite small compared to other parks?

On a side note, when I looked at the attendances of the 90's, the Skydome jumped out at me. I know they had some great teams, but holy crap they the highest attendance in baseball. I was pretty young at that time so I guess I really didn't know that.

Wrigley is pretty much inline with the capacity of the newer parks that have been built over the last 20 years or so; right around 38K.

As far as comparing the Cubs attendance to other teams, I have no idea. I would guess the Cubs drew significantly less than teams like the Dodgers and Yankees, but those two teams play in yards that hold around 15,000 more people.

It's no secret that the Cubs draw more of the tourist crowd, especially in the summer.
