Memo to the National League. The Chicago Cubs mean business.

At the time I told all my friends who were Cubs fans that it was a horrible contract. No one knew Soriano's actual age and one of his biggest assets (speed) was deteriorating.

With that being said, if the Cubs had cashed in on one of those 1st two seasons with Soriano instead of choking it wouldve been worth it

But since its the Cubs of course it didnt work out

Just a terrible contract. 8 years for anyone over 32 is just awful. If they could have gotten him for the same money for 4-6 years it would have been acceptable.
Also, as Busa mentioned, if they would have won a title in one of those first two years it would have all been worth it. However, it also did not help that Soriano was absolutely terrible in those two postseason series.

LOL I thought this meant they signed him again for a second. Whew.

No kidding. This was horrible judgement by spank. Scaring the hell out of us cubs fans thinking they signed him for even longer. It seems believable coming from the cubs' front office. :(

No joke!! Whew! I thought this meant they RESIGNED him....ugh.

The 136 million was what relieved me almost. After all, given how lousy of a contract it was/is, the numbers are forever ingrained in my mind, right there with my SSN.

8 years, $136 million. 8 years, $136 million. 8 years, $136 million..........

More good Chicago Cubs moments:

Are the Cubs still paying Mark Pryor? When will Cub fan retire the Mark Pryor t-shirts at Wrigley? Is Kerry Wood going to be the next Nolan Ryan? How will Castro's Cub career end - (a) injury, (b) trade for an over the hill veteran and two prospects who suck or (c) due to a batting coach who gets into his head and ruins his mechanics? When the Cubs move to Scumberg, will their attendance suffer?

The Chicago cubs are the worst franchise in all of sports bar none. They have unbelievable fans. They're in what may be the best sports town in the U.S. They are printing money and they continue to be awful. I thank God every day that as a young kid I decided to hate the Cubs because everyone else around me loved them.

If you look to the south side of Chicago, you see more of this kind of stupidity .... Dunn, Peavy and Rios. Guess its a Chicago thing.....All In and Busted!

If I want to be reminded about the Lou Brock/Ernie Broglio trade, all I have to do is listen to any Fox Broadcast that Tim McCarver does. He will regale us Cub fans with that misstep every time.

Who is Mark Pryor? Terrelle's brother or something?

Not even close. They aren't even the worst franchise in their own division.

While I agree, I think you have to take the fan base, money and all of that into the equation. They have been FILLING that stadium for so long and still can't find a team to win. I know technically they aren't the worst franchise, but they really like to mess up a team.

The MLB playoffs are a crap shoot. They won back to back division titles in '07-'08 and had the best record in the majors in '08 so they have had good teams.

Ugh... reminders of why the Cubs' front office is one of the worst in MLB.

Cubs agree to $136M deal with Soriano - MLB - ESPN

You're way off base here. The signing of Soriano was the first time in my lifetime - and probably yours - that the Cubs went after and landed the premier free agent on the market. It signaled a vast departure from the way McPhail ran the team and acquired talent; that is to to say that the Cubs finally started to spend money like a team in the 3rd largest media market in the country should spend money.

Without Soriano, the Cubs don't win the division (with only an average team) in 2007, and in 2008 he hit 29 homers with 97 RBI despite missing two months. Also, as was mentioned earlier, he did choke in the playoffs - along with everyone else on the roster. That gag job was an entire team effort.

Not true. There have been acres of empty seats this year, especially earlier in the season before schools let out and vacations started and whatnot. Home games in September will be sparsely attended because the games won't matter.
