Mel Kiper Big Board (QBs)

Stanley reminded me of Jay Cutler when he was with the Bears. Just missing.....something....leadership....an edge....something.

That is a safe assumption. I think Kiper just looks at a few preseason lists, scans some stats, then regurgitates a number. Hell, I remember reading some thing he did in a magazine back in the '90's and he had a big write up on Leland McElroy being a NFL star due to his insane 40 speed. I don't think he knows much more than a rabid SEC or Big Ten fan. Probably less, actually.
I drafted McElroy in my dynasty league in 1997 (when I played fantasy football)

Kiper, you bastard!

Another person who loved McElroy was Beano Cook.

Lord help us all.

A Mel Kiper QB board. Is he still getting paid for his in-depth knowledge?

But Kiper only dug in his heels further, making this infamous proclamation on ESPN:

“If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I’m done. That’s it. I’m out.”

Except Cutler played with a "dont give a shit" attitude. Whenever he was in trouble he'd just heave it deep and hope for the best. I loved that about him...but I'm not a bears fan. Stanley seems more "game manager" and risk averse.

If scouts and GMs were half as smart as they believe they are they’d be looking for the next Kurt Warner at smaller schools. Someone under the radar.

Don't see that at all. Cutler was pouty, not a leader at all, not a guy his teammates rallied around. Stanley has had his failures but he doesn't seem to be cut in the same mold as Cutler.

Correct. You have to be able to put the ball into a 2x2 or smaller window to have a legitimate shot as a NFL QB these days and Beathard is the only guy to have come through the program in a long time who could do that. Stanley ain't even close.
When Beathard was playing I of course knew he'd have a few INTs, everyone does. But I never got that super-cringey feeling that I get every time Stanley throws. It's a weird expectation that when Nate tosses the ball something catastrophic is going to happen.

His stats are very padded against absolutely awful teams. Look at what he has done against even average to decent teams..... Not much. Bad thumb? He was no good long before the so called bad thumb.

Any allowance for a shitty run game? Or average receivers? or his OC not having Noah fant in during key situations? He made some bad plays for sure.

Stanzi was the same. he just kept chucking it and he had Iowa's two best receivers in my opnion in DJK and McNutt and when healthy had Moeaki

Aside from the monster game against OSU, his TDs against "decent to good" teams are significantly lacking. In 2 games against each of PSU, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue, he has exactly 2 TDs against each opponent and 0 in one game against MSU. So in 9 games against what I would consider middle of the pack to good B10 competition, he has 8 TDs. In 5 games against the teams you named, I think he has 17 TDs.

How was our run game in those games??

I'd say NFL receivers are a little more adept at going and getting the ball in close quarters also.

Well i meant the lack of fire, doesnt show up when needed, has good stats but they arent in big games...i dont know Cutler, i dont follow the Bears, but i know they have been avg a long time, no championships, no good qbs, and cutler was known as a softie quitter. Stanley hasnt quit, maybe he guts it out, but he has ZERO killer instinct at this point. He just trots off the field time after time not converting. No sense of urgency in his play

Right. As my post said...missing something....killer instinct...clutch....passion....leadership....accuracy for sure

I just don’t see it. He may have the measurables, but he’s just not there yet. Still needs to improve his completion percentage, footwork in the pocket, and confidence. Needs to have a softer touch on short passes and stop trying to rocket every pass. Hopefully he’ll improve in all phases next year. And maybe, just maybe, KF will start playing Mansell and Petras earlier in mop up duty to improve their development in live game situations to get them ready for life post Stanley.
