Mea Culpa

I posted right after the game on Saturday, and I shouldn't have. I think I even said I shouldn't be posting and I called for KF's head. That was the worst loss ever, and I was shocked. Now it's Wednesday, and I don't think KF should be fired, and I'm willing to admit to being an over emotional crybaby after the game. But, I still think we need some changes. Many have laid out all of the clock management, and losing to bad teams, and playing to keep it close arguments that I agree with. My question is, will KF ever do anything to change these issues? And by the way, why are we so much worse on the road this year?

Overall this and last years team are soft, the talent is there to make the coaches look good but we are void of tough hard nosed leaders on both sides of the ball, hopefully some will emerge over the next month or we will be in for a long winter, no way we lose the gopher game with angerer, banks, gallery, ect.

Honestly, I have never really looked at it that way. It's a great observation. I think we really lack leadership especially on the defensive side of the ball. We were spoiled with so many great linebackers over the years who were talented and leaders. Now we seem to have a giant hole. Thanks for pointing that out.

Good point about "tough" leader(s) on the field. You always got the feeling teammates would rather swallow 5 quarts of 10w-30 than hack off Mitch King or Pat Angerer or Matt Roth.

Your explanation is far better, to me, than "change the scheme(s)!" Players get here and learn the schemes and get developed into better players. We can't simply change schemes every year to "adapt" and expect anything consistently better.

But...a tough, hard-case, on-field leader CAN some times put that little "push" over the top.

Jon apologizes for complaining about the team but the coaches and players know it is part of the territory, you don't pay a coach 3,7 million a year for 500 teams, players cant have it both ways they come here partly because we have a very loyal and passionate fan base, when they succeed they are worshipped, getting beat by a terrible Gopher team they deserve people questioning their heart and desire,

I want to clarify my soft statement, we have been soft on the road the past 2 yrs with the exception of at Michigan last yr, this yr we played great at home againt Pitt and Northwestern, regardless of the coaching I just feel we lack consistent leaders that we have had in the past, besides McNutt who is going to lead this team late in the 4th quarter of a tight game???

Go Hawkeyes beat Michigan and all will be forgotten for at least one week

Get over the adapt and need to change crap. It is what it is. In the words of Ricky Stanzi.... If u don't love it, leave it. Every coach in all of football is scrutinized for the exact same thing.

Huh??? EVERY coach in ALL of football? This is probably the dumbest sentence that I've read today, so far...

The "leadership" issue..

is the easy out when a team doesn't perform to expectations. The coaches rave about the leadership ability of guys like Nielsen and Morris. And everything ever said about Mike Daniels is how hard he works and how great of an example he is to other players. Sometimes teams just aren't good enough. If the team wasn't practicing hard or putting in time watching film, we could say they lack leadership. But there's been no indication or any of that information coming out.

Fine, you are entitled to your opinion. Now, please spell out what you would like to see Norm and KF do....which players would you put in there and what type of defensive scheme? Just curious. We are not great as it is,maybe you do have a better idea. Which players and how would you line them up? Thanks.

I'd actually start with the offense.
If we're 3rd & 3 from the 5 when our RB is averaging 8ypc, I wouldn't run a 98 step drop with our QB.

That's where I'd start.

<<Asking LB's to cover slot WR's is blatant negligence>>

No, it's called a 3-4, a 4-3, Cover 2, and various other names. News flash: LBs covering slot receivers is neither new nor negligent. AJ Edds did it, Angerer did it, Greenway and Hodge did it. Jeremiha Hunter did it.

First of all we don't have a Edds or Greenway.
Second, each one of those guys was abused on more than one occasion running this negligent system. Or just ask Greenway, he'll tell you how ignorant it is.
Third, if you don't think our opponents scheme this matchup you are blind.

The point is that asking players to do things they're not capable of is on the coaches. The players do the best they can but Anthony Gonzalez matched up with Chad Greenway in the slot is exactly what I said, its negligent.

Bottom line might be that this is a rebuilding year and nobody in their right mind expected the Hawks to excel this season. That being said, not being prepared for the on-side kick was a superior lack of judgment.

Saturday's game could tell the tale of the rest of the season.
