McDonough

I have a feeling wrestling is the only sport you would defend this type of behavior in.

Its classless and makes McDonough look like a big baby. If he didnt want the silver then he shouldnt have gotten his *** kicked.

People are making too big of a deal of this. He did what he wanted with his medal in private. That is not classless. He didn't flaunt it or show people or tell people he threw it away. Dealing with his loss privately is not being a big baby. He didn't broadcast in an interview that he threw it away, he did it on his own, and someone happened to find it.

I would think Iowa wrestling fans would appreciate this mentality, but I'm guessing that if you'd seen a photo on twitter of McDonough's 2nd place medal framed above his fireplace mantle you'd call him names and complain about that too.

Stop being a crybaby over some armchair wrestler's opinion.

the reporter that dug it out of the trash prolly won't be welcomed in the iowa wrestling room again I can tell you that

I like how you use capitalized letters like I didn't know it was his medal. I didn't say he couldn't do what he wanted with it, get over it. I know Matt thinks second sucks, but I don't think he got second due to a lack of effort, bad luck, or anything within his control. He just got beat by a better (at least for yesterday) wrestler. I would have liked to have seen him act differently. As far as him working his tail off, he's not going to work any harder than he always does. Him throwing away a medal isn't going to put him over the top. Maybe ithis week and a half will allow him to recover from whatever is ailing him, but he's not pulling in any extra motivation, then he's already working with, since he gives 100% everytime anyways.

You still haven't answered how this is childish. You're right, Matt is not going to work any harder over the next few days, as he's worked his tail off for the last 4+ years. The dude is physically and mentally tough and is disappointed that he fell short yesterday. How is throwing away a silver medal childish?

You don't have it happen to you, to not be able to give an opinion. None of else ever wrestled for the Hawkeyes, I guess we can't give an opinion on their performance? I hope for your sake you didn't throw away your medals. I'm sure it hurt, but it's still a great accomplishment and something to proudly show your kids and grandkids some day.

"Great accomplishment" and "proudly" are in the eyes of the beholder. Er... or something like that.

I'm not sure if you're looking for dictionary response to what childish is, but all I can give is my opinion in that stomping off the podium and throwing away a hard earned medal is childish.

He should of pawned it or donated it to someones man cave. :)

I like that he does not want second. Like someone said second is the first loser.
For those that think he is wrong, I guess you need to apply the same to football and when we lose, heck really out of the two teams that day, we were really just second. No biggie, right?

stomping off the awards stand before all pictures were taken is poor sports in my opinion

I think that's probably something everyone can agree with.

Throwing your medal away when you think you're off camera is not a big deal though, imo.

Wrestle Delgado like Robles wrestled McDonough. What's the difference between throwing a medal away or just putting it in a box and storing it somewhere?

It's hard to say who's share's the blame, but the head coach is ultimately responsible for the outcome of the program. I truly think the talent is there, just have to bring it out. That is what made Gable great, he took guys like Jesse Whitmer and turned them into nat'l champions.

The crap people are saying about McD is straight out jealousy. I've always looked at him as being a stand up student athlete on the mat and classroom. People are butthurt over thirty years of dominance.

You do realize that Jesse Whitmer placed 4th in the 1997 Big Ten championships before that national title. My only point is lets let Nationals play out this year before jumping to conclusions.

I think tossing the medal is a little extreme. I get the point of view that McD was not happy with his performance and that second is not okay ... But, it is what it is. You finished in second ... But hey, to each his own ... Wrestlers are an intense bunch ... And if tossing it in the garbage motivates him to win the NCAA next week here in DSM then "good move." :)

So he tossed his trophy in the garbage, is it good sportsmanship? nope. But who said any of us ever made all the right decisions in our lives. If this is what it takes for Mcd to shake the demons then so be it. None of us should be judging what this young, intense athelete is thinking. I am sure that this was heat of the moment and someday he may regret his actions. Yes he is on a big stage and probably has more people chearing against him that for him. How many of us can say that we were ever in that position. I think it is safe to say that we have all been involved in sports, but very few can say that they have felt the pressure these young men feel when walking onto the mat. Not to mention the pressure they put on themselves. All i am saying give this guy a break. whether you feel he is right or wrong. what is done is done. Now it is time to wish McD good luck at the NCAA's!

First, the report of the Iowa fans being classless is completely false. I thought all fan bases were very supportive of their teams, there was the usual Iowa routing against Penn St, Minnesota routing against Iowa. You will always have that. As for Matt, what he does with the award is his choice. The award stand issue is where my beef comes. Was he disappointed, yes. So was Gable after Larry Owings, so was McIlravy after Marianetti, so was Matt after Robles. All were on the award stand, none were happy. Take your lumps, continue to work hard and do not let Delgado get in deep on a single. Let's face it McDonough had a bad tournament, he got taken down in the first match twice, won 5-4 and in the semis he caught the Michigan kid in a scramble. He has been in a funk, but March 21-23 is when the real money is on the line and I am not going to be against Matt.

First off, some of you are completely taking my comment the wrong way. I disagreed with the act of stomping off and throwing away his medal. I called the act childish, some are calling it unsportsmanlike. Really in this instance it's the same thing. I by no means am questioning Matt's character, drive, will to win, or bashing him as a person. I disagree with one act, that yes was in the heat of the moment, but IMO was uncalled for. It's not just throwing away the medal (I get it, it's his). It's the combination of both the podium and the medal, that led me to use the wording I did.

I love Matt, I love Iowa wrestling, and I'll love the fact when PSU and Minny throw away their 2nd and 3rd place trophies in a childish manner, peace.

I was there. McDonough didn't "stomp" off the podium. After the first photo he then left the podium and then put the medal in the trash can. It's like getting a family photo taken. Take the photo and get it over with.

wanna make a friendly wager on any of this teams 4th place finishers on completing this task after last weekend?

i really hope McD can gut it out at Nat'ls...

I also was there get over it he did nothing wrong on the stand. He might gut it out but don't count on him winning it all if you watched his matches you could see he's not as strong as his opponents. He use to be able to get to there legs and finish but he just doesn't have it this year.I think it's the weight, look at his legs there sunken in no muscle fat at all.He had a great career and accomplished a lot for himself and the team.Good Luck to him in what ever he decides to do after he graduates.

I was there too and was getting ready for Ramos match so I didn't see him jump off the stand.

I mentioned this previously and I don't think anyone listened so I'll say it again. Do any of you think that Doyle has lost his touch with athletes since the Rhabdo incident? The athletes just don't seem in the same condition as they use to be. This definitely applies to the football team as well.
