McCaffrey Punking Out On His Team

This problem stems from the corrupt NCAA's refusal to even consider compensating players for the value derived from their efforts. The Sun Bowl (albeit a relatively insignificant bowl game) will result in lucrative TV deals, ticket sales, and merchandise sales that will directly benefit the "corrupt NCAA" and "classless Stanford University." Why would this young man risk his entire career for one meaningless game that will be forgotten the very instant it ends? It certainly isn't some existential idea of responsibility to the team and teammates.

I'm not understanding your point. I assume you are meaning that his teammates blocked for him so he should play for them? I don't disagree with that at all. But it's a personal choice. And I can't blame the kid for doing what's best for his future. Isn't that why you go to college on the first place? To put yourself in the best position to be successful in your future adulthood?

As a fan, I want these guys to play. The game is more fun in every aspect if they do. But if they destroy their knees, spines, brains etc etc, I'm not the one suffering because of it. It is their life and they have every right to live it how they choose.

So you'd be cool if King, CJB, LeShun and Kittle all said, "Screw it..."? How about if Jewell was added to that list?

Any way you look at this, it's selfish. As someone pointed out, his teammates "support" him. No wonder they're in the Sun Bowl this year and his numbers are down. Last year's seniors gave way to a bunch of candy-ass snowflakes.

Let's say CM plays. He gives everything he has on every snap he plays. Then a linebacker stuffs him and it's a freak accident occurs (they happen in football) and he snaps his spine. Is Stanford, Fans, coaches, players etc going to pay for the rest of his life? Are they going to provide for his Family, pay his medical bills, out his kids through college and do so in the mannor that he will be able to once he starts making NFL money? He's their teammate....

Given that logic, i'm surprised Bill Gates didn't hang it up back in the day. Poor bastard could've electrocuted himself out in that garage!

But that's not really the problem, though.

Let's say the NCAA said they were going to pay each player in a bowl game $50,000. A ludicrous scenario.

Do you think CM is going to all of a sudden play in this bowl game when he's worried about losing millions like Jaylon Smith did? Assuming he's the 18th to 20th pick he's going to get a contract for $10-15 million. That's why he's sitting out. There's too much money at the pro level and the NCAA doesn't have anything that could come close to stopping it. I'm not 100% against compensating college players, but what are you going to do, pay the Fournettes and McCaffreys $5 million a year? With a $1 million bonus if they play in their bowl?

It just isn't the issue.

Good point. I made a lazy argument and redid the math. I guess compensating players wouldn't provide the necessary incentives for star players (like McCaffery) to participate in a bowl game.

Other than taking away these players' right to participate in the NFL draft (which will never happen), I don't know how you provide the right incentives.

Why wasn't this thread brought up when fournett (sp) announced this same thing earlier? I think some of this is just a way
for people to crap on a guy who tore us up at the Rose Bowl last year.......

And I agree...... BOOOOOOOO MCCAFFREY

Nobody cares about Leonard Fournette because, as an $EC player, we already assume he's getting the "perks", plus, he HAS been injured an appreciable portion of the season.

The fact Stanford players AND their Head Coach all "understand" lowers my opinion of them (not that they care), but more importantly, it may lead to stupid/unnecessary "rules" governing this type of thing in the future. We shouldn't even NEED to be in a discussion like this. But that's how far society has fallen over the last generation or two.

As a fan I would be sad. I want to see my team win just like everyone else. But I'm not putting in any effort, or sacrifice that they are. So if they decide they are done, who am I to argue with them?

If their teammates feel slighted, then I can't argue with that either. I don't blame them for that either, as it would be understandable. However, I haven't seen anything that makes me think they are offended.

If the NCAA makes these "rules" then this situation won't happen again. And all of these doomsday scenarios won't happen, so I might be a good thing.

The NCAA did part of it to themselves by having 42 (or whatever the number is now) bowl games and allowing 6 win teams to get in. They saw the dollar signs and everything was groovy until now.

One thing I do know is that I'm not watching bowl games where a bunch of people sit out, and that includes Iowa.

I'm glad McCaffrey got all that time to prepare for the draft by skipping out on his team. It really paid dividends!!!

Interesting, although I don't really understand what the value of being able to bench press is to a running back. Bench press doesn't seem like a very functional strength requirement to a running back, at least not the type of back he is. I don't see teams passing on McCaffrey because he can't push 225 pounds 20 times in a row.

Of the things to "struggle" on that's probably the least hurtful to his draft stock. If he ran a bad 40 time or had a poor vertical or seemed stiff on the agility drills it would be a different story.

I wonder how Jordan Lomax would rate McCaffrey on agility drills.

Unless of course you're a QB who is counting on that RB for blitz pick-up. Not that they're asked to hold a block, but I would say there's a correlation between that upper body strength and blocking ability (even though I would also say blocking ability in RBs has more to do with willingness to block than anything).

I myself don't blame CM one bit for passing on the Sun Bowl. It would be different IMO if it was a BCS bowl game. There's everything to lose & nothing to gain by playing this game.

Good. The bowl system is so bloated now, with the goal being of these fat-cats to make money at the expense of young football players, even from 5-7 teams now. I don't blame a kid who could make millions of dollars from bailing from one of these exhibition games to avoid a career-ending injury.
Well said!

That's the issue. It all depends on the shoes your wearing. If your in his shoes how could that not be considered? Thankfully he's in the minority because the 'what if' of having everyone else doing it starts up. Then college football would have an issue. Even if it's just the top 20ish kids or so those top 20ish kids are usually on the best teams in the bowl games. Who's going to watch bowl games if the studs aren't playing in them? That domino effect is what would get change to happen. But so far just having one player or two from teams playing in bowls like the Sun Bowl isn't going to do that yet. Once you get players wiling to sit out the playoffs because they have a slightly twisted ankle and their agent that's paying them illegally but hasn't officially signed with yet tells them it'd be smarter to get ready for the combine then risk getting hurt in another game is when the decisions will get tricker on how to combat it.

He averaged 30 touches a game for two years. He has to protect his wheels.

He blew away the competition at the NFL combine with a 3 cone drill time a full quarter of a second faster that any other running back. That is like comparing a 4.25 forty to a 4.5 forty.

Marshall Faulk said that Christian has the best eye, hand, feet coordination that he has seen in years.
