I totally agree with you that there's nothing they can do to prevent it; I guess I'm just advocating that if players are going to start jumping ship on bowl games, they should do away with them and go to a bigger playoff format. At least there would be some incentive for players not to sit out. No one wants to watch 42 watered down bowls where the best talent is gone. One could also argue that the NCAA has done this to thselves by including so many bowls and allowing teams with .500 records to play. There's no exclusivity anymore so the prestige isn't there.
This sort of thing is terrible for the game. If UNC wins they won't get any credit because everyone's going to say it was because CM wasn't playing (whether it's true or not). That's a lose-lose situation; why even play? When you have something that's bad for the game and can't really be stopped, you need to do away with it and make some incentive (only 7 bowls making up an 8 team playoff).
Yes, someone could say it'd never happen because of the big money involved in bowls, but if the players quit participating and the games on the field suck, the money won't be there anymore.
Yeah, this could prove devastating to the low and mid level bowls. And I agree that they should go to a bigger playoff format.
What you said about it being terrible for the game is also spot on. But as we've seen with college basketball, which has plummeted in the last 20 years in overall quality, what has been terrible for the game (guys leaving early as soon as they possibly can) has benefited the individual player. More guys making money in the NBA (even when they ride the pine) and more scholarships available to players that normally wouldn't get them at the top level.
Now this is different because CM and LF are leaving with a game to go and us as fans want to see them play and are paying large sums of money to see a bowl game but at the same time, I'm guessing their backups aren't exactly upset. They, along with other guys on the roster now have more opportunity to shine and improve their own stock.
