McCaffrey Punking Out On His Team

I totally agree with you that there's nothing they can do to prevent it; I guess I'm just advocating that if players are going to start jumping ship on bowl games, they should do away with them and go to a bigger playoff format. At least there would be some incentive for players not to sit out. No one wants to watch 42 watered down bowls where the best talent is gone. One could also argue that the NCAA has done this to thselves by including so many bowls and allowing teams with .500 records to play. There's no exclusivity anymore so the prestige isn't there.

This sort of thing is terrible for the game. If UNC wins they won't get any credit because everyone's going to say it was because CM wasn't playing (whether it's true or not). That's a lose-lose situation; why even play? When you have something that's bad for the game and can't really be stopped, you need to do away with it and make some incentive (only 7 bowls making up an 8 team playoff).

Yes, someone could say it'd never happen because of the big money involved in bowls, but if the players quit participating and the games on the field suck, the money won't be there anymore.

Yeah, this could prove devastating to the low and mid level bowls. And I agree that they should go to a bigger playoff format.

What you said about it being terrible for the game is also spot on. But as we've seen with college basketball, which has plummeted in the last 20 years in overall quality, what has been terrible for the game (guys leaving early as soon as they possibly can) has benefited the individual player. More guys making money in the NBA (even when they ride the pine) and more scholarships available to players that normally wouldn't get them at the top level.

Now this is different because CM and LF are leaving with a game to go and us as fans want to see them play and are paying large sums of money to see a bowl game but at the same time, I'm guessing their backups aren't exactly upset. They, along with other guys on the roster now have more opportunity to shine and improve their own stock.

The only difference between this and what's been happening for years is the players are physically removing themselves from the bowl game now rather than pretending to play. For years, players that were guaranteed high draft picks were doing the bare minimum in meaningless bowl games and playing not to get hurt. That's how you get the Boise States of the world beating the P5 teams in bowl games or when Oklahoma kicked the crap out of Alabama, etc, etc.

Yep. Every bowl season you look at the games and you think to yourself what teams want to be there.

McCaffrey is a crappy teammate and a selfish jerk to do this to his team. A bowl game is so much more than an "exhibition" as some put it. For one thing, it counts in your season standings and statistical standings. It's like an extra non-conference game. If CM played in those games early in the season, then he should be playing in this one.

For another, it's supposed to be a celebration WITH YOUR TEAMMATES of the hard work you put in to have a successful season. It's a shared event which, for many of CM's teammates, will be their LAST time on any football field. And he has decided to crap all over their experience by not playing. He is refusing to take the field for the FINAL time with the Cardinal seniors on his team, a sign of disrespect for them.

I'm glad he's not a Hawkeye, and I hope the Colts, my NFL team, don't draft him. You can't pick and choose when you want to be a member of your team and when it's suddenly inconvenient to you. Screw him. IMO, he's a selfish POS for doing this.

Oh--and then he has the gall to end with "GO CARDINAL!" What a piece of work.

Why wasn't this thread brought up when fournett (sp) announced this same thing earlier? I think some of this is just a way
for people to crap on a guy who tore us up at the Rose Bowl last year.......

And I agree...... BOOOOOOOO MCCAFFREY

All he has to do is take out an insurance policy for the game. If he gets a a career ending injury in the bowl game he is paid...pretty simple idea and he can afford the policy with then signing bonus he wil he getting. Play for your team and fans! I should walk into work tomorrow and tell them I'm sitting out to work on my next career position.

If a more prestigious company in your field came to you and offered you a position, basically the same job but better in almost every way. And the pay is ridiculously higher, would you tell them no? You should because you are already a member of a "team". It's not fair to your co-workers for you to take that job. But I'm betting you would.

I would show up and do my job and worth through my 2 weeks or whatever the length was that was expected. I wouldn't mail it in like CM or LF and I can't take out an insurance policy to cover anything that happened to me before the new gig. I'm guessing you would just pull an office space and screw over your current boss?

Well the Sun Bowl is the 30th. So unless you think CM told the media before he told his coach, he did give his "boss" 2 weeks. So no problem?

Well he better just video conference any of the upcoming interviews. It is pretty risky driving in a car and flyimg in a plane. Risk everywhere!

You must have missed the or whatever length was expected part. Reading is hard for a troll.

How do you know the length the Stanfords head coach requires? How do you know Shaw wasn't in the loop during the entire decision making process? I'm a troll for not jumping down a 20 year old guys throat while
Makekinn a decision that will impact his future? Gotcha

if I paid someone's college career for them based off playing football games then I would expect them to play said football game

He did play. For 3 years. Now that he has announced him going early the he shouldn't be awarded any more financial help. If there is any scholarship money or other advantages left for this fall semester, it should be forfeit. He should now be considered an Allumni, and should only get help from the college as their standards and rules have established.

Just like if you decided to leave your job. You have no further obligation to your former employer, and they have no further obligation to you. Thank you for your service, good luck in your future.

They say the bowls are for the fans. They aren't.
They say the bowls are for the teams as a reward. They aren't.
The coaches say the bowls mean a lot because of the extra practices. They don't.

The bowls are for the Chambers of Commerce and local economies. Pretty much end of story.

As far as the sitters-out are concerned.....they've given a lot for many years. If they have a chance to play pro and earn money, by avoiding injury in a Chamber-of-Commerce game, more power to them.

What are they going to say? That he's a POS for bailing on them, right before bowl prep? In private, I bet the opinion is a much different one.

I would think if they didn't agree with him, they'd just say nothing. At least one teammate has tweeted his support.

We can argue all day about how appropriate it is to stay home and not play in the bowl. But we won't disagree on the impact that this will have. It will happen more. This will affect some bowls negatively, it can also hurt teams/programs who really need a bowl win.

The debate will get 10X hotter when a player decides not to participate in a PLAYOFF game.

I think bowls start to go away over the next 5-6 years, and I won't be sorry to see them go if they're just going to be watered down games with backups playing anyway. Games where stars sit out are meaningless for both teams because the focus afterwards will always be on who sat out or who played.

If Louisville or UNC win, no one, and I mean no one, is going to give them credit. There will always be an asterisk next to these games and at that point they should just stop hosting them. Make a bigger playoff field and at least make the games count for something. If players start sitting those out then I guess I'll just mail my keys in and say that being a football fan was fun while it lasted. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

There's absolutely no way you could incentivize these guys to play in bowl games.

-Pay players? Nope. Not unless you could match signing bonuses and first year salaries which won't happen.
-Take away the scholarship? Tuition is a drop in the bucket.
-Guilt trip? Money talks.

Just get rid of the bowls so we don't have to watch them die a slow death.
