McCaffery's Comments on Basabe

McCaffery said he believes Melsahn Basabe could average a double-double for Iowa. That might not seem like an outrageous prediction on the surface, as you see players do that in the college game each year. But there have only been four Iowa players to have done that since 1974; Bruce King in 1976 & 1977, Ed Horton in 1989, Les Jepsen in 1990 and Reggie Evans in 2001 & 2002. Those are also the only four players to average double-digits in rebounds regardless of the point total.

Basabe’s 11/pgg average last year was the 8th best mark by a freshman at Iowa as were his 342 points. His 210 rebounds were the most all time for an Iowa freshman and he had the third best freshman field goal percentage.
If Mel averages a double-double as a sophomore, he would put himself in rare, rare company in Iowa basketball history. McCaffery also said that Basabe played last year at around 212 pounds (he was listed at 225) and is 234 pounds now.

Hmm.... 14 and 10 this year. 18 and 12 his Junior year. Buh Bye senior year.

He put on almost 25 pounds?? That guy should be a beast. Hope he doesn't lose his hops.

I've said it before, Mel is one of the most driven and hardest working kids I've ever met.

winning helps recruiting, making deep runs in the big dance helps recruiting and having a uptempo game helps recruiting, one and done are nice but eventually they start to catch up to you in graduation # and eventually cost you scholarships, i will take highly regarded 4 year player anyday over a 1 and done

Rebounds are all about anticipation of the shot being missed (even if it's made), weak side (70-80%) coverage, and desire. Fran is planting the seed. He can get one more OBoard putback a game and that pads both stats. Mel was dang good last year and he looked pretty awkward at times. If Brom/Arch/Ola help chip away at some other bigs Mel will average 9+ boards. Go Hawks!

One of the most important keys to rebounding is planting the hip into the opponent and when he moves you move with him screening him away from the ball while at the same time gradually pushing him away from the basketball hoop. It's very difficult for the officials to catch and you know when it's being effective when the opponent finally gets angry and grabs you and throws you down and gets hit with a flagrant foul........lol.

Oh by the way Jon that's Bruce SKY King.

Don Nelson, Dave Guenther, Bill Logan, Sam Williams, John Johnson, Kevin Kunnert, Charles Darling, Gerry Jones, and George Peeples all averaged double figures in rebounds in one season. Several of them did it more than one year. Several of them were also double doubles.

I don't think people realize how hard he works.

I have many people on this board say they think Dev will be a better player, and I agree he has more natural talent, does he have the same drive and work ethic?

I don't care how hard he works, unless he figured out a way to grow three inches or gain 30 more pounds and keep his quickness, he isn't going to leave early.

Still feel like Basabe is gone after his junior year and not to another school but the NBA?

Basabe appears lost on the court. He is thinking about every move, not confident at all, and by the time he makes a decision, the window has closed. I don't know how much of an impact adding weight to his frame is having-maybe just mental-but he looks nothing like the guy we saw last season. Getting Brommer back should help, as Archie commands 0 respect down low and his guy sags off, but the staff has to figure out a way to Basabe going, or it is going to be a really long season.

agree with your post, not having a decent center really hurts Mel, but it appears that something besides basketball is frustrating Baasbe, his body language, his effort, and interaction with teammates looks terrible.
