McCaffery Presser for 1-12

While I like Fran and what he is doing, I think he could tone down the temper just a bit. In my experience, when some one is yelling with their hair on fire all the time, people around them start to tune that out. Bring the fire when it is called for (not saying it wasn't at MSU), but make it count.

As deep into the abyss as Iowa basketball had fallen during Alford's final years and then the three-year disaster that followed, I don't mind one bit any fire and passion Fran can bring to the program and CHA. He is exactly what the program needs at this point in time. The culture of losing and mediocre effort needed to smashed and tossed out of the building; Fran was hired to do just that. Sometimes that work won't be pretty; sorry if that offends you.

IMHO he has not gone over the line with his temper, nor do I think he is yelling with his "hair on fire all the time," as you put it. I think his players are getting the message, and hopefully they will respond.

Tweeter, don't get me wrong, I like and understand what Fran is doing, but I don't find the theatrics to be that effective when they are over used. Pick your spots. Getting a T in every game (I know he has not had one in every game.) will not get you any points with the refs in the long run and will soon lose it's effectiveness in motivating your players. I'm just saying, ratchet it down a notch.

i cant believe the referees are that stupid to fall for flip flopping acts or hand checks ? to me thats an insults to my intelligence. if i was a coach i would be p122ed off. the game should be played fair. period.

Fran is not doing anything at Iowa that he did not do at Siena or Lehigh ect.
He knows what he is doing, and will regulate his outbursts accordingly.

After watching the IU-Minny game last nite, I do think that the Big Ten refs have decided to swallow their whistles this season. Not good for a outmanned Iowa team.
I do not think it is helpful to the Big Ten overall, either. Cuts out free flowing drives to the bucket, and uptempo play, which makes Big Ten ball look like it is played in mud.

He talks a good game...it doesn't mean jack if he doesn't start backing it up...he's got 3 years from now.

And I sincerely hope if he does start winning regularly he tones it down, he looks like a loon out there. Hopefully it's because we are just so god awful now.

Fran strikes me as a very emotionally intelligent guy, and a coach who is not only respected but also well-liked by his players. I think he knows how to pick his spots, with both his team and the refs.

I also recall a story about Hayden in the early days. I believe it was after a close loss to UCLA. Hayden came into the locker room, and guys were smiling and feeling good that they had played a competitive game with a national program.

Hayden got right up in a couple players' faces and said if he ever saw another player smile after a loss he'd punch him in the kisser.

Like Hayden, I think Fran knows there is a balance to these type of outbursts.

It was against Oklahoma in 81.

Why are some of you guys so afraid of emotion..."I like fire but that is too much." "He just looks like a loon and everyone will tune him out." Blah Blah Blah

Sports are based on emotion. I want a coach to be fired up. The Hawks have 2 coaches that are fired up right now. They want their programs to be different and always strive for getting the most out of their kids.

You guys with your panties in a bunch just swallow your tongue for now. If he flops you can start talking about him looking like a loon. If he wins I bet you won't have much to say.

Of course, this is how it always is. That is why Fran doesn't really care. He's saying you brought me here to win and that is what I'm going to do but I'm going to do it my way. If a couple chairs and clipboards get busted in the process so be it. He isn't going to change who he is or how he coaches or apologize for it. He is fully aware of the fact that if he doesn't win he's gone.

I'm not afraid of emotion, but from personal experience, I find over the top yelling and screaming to quickly loose its effectiveness. I'm not saying don't yell or don't show emotion, just don't wear it out.

Was this lesson learned while someone was changing a "culture?"

He does pick and choose his spots. He's a players coach. he talks them up when he needs to, and gets on their *** when he needs to. And the one thing the players LOVE is that he stands up for his team and never stops coaching. He doesnt need to ratchet down one thing in my opinion. He was hired to change the culture and he's doing just that.
