Meyer is about as beefy as a slim jim.
You mean Slim Jim from Stray Cats?
Meyer is about as beefy as a slim jim.
I didn't claim you did either. My point is "hinder" what, his ability to take charges?
I appreciate players that don't back down from opposing players, but I really don't think Zach is the only guy on the roster that doesn't back down from opponents, but he seems to be celebrated for this.
So the question at hand is: Does McCabe get celebrated for his "toughness" and work ethic because he is limited in a lot of areas of the game, or am I just nuts? Do people identify themselves with Zach because of his attitude? I don't know the answer to those questions, but whatever they personally may be for each of us on this board to each their own.
He needs to be a leader this season, just as Marble and Basabe need to be as Seniors, without that it is difficult to build anything. Whatever is contributed on the floor can be looked over if a player is a great example of what a teammate should be and Zach has been a kid who has bought into the Iowa program and has sacrificed and done what he needs to do to fill a role. If that is bashing a kid then I am guilty.
MeatManas bolded area is the only time i think you've ever even given Zach a backhanded compliment. how about you just give: him a break? he's a limited player that doesn't play a ton of minutes said:First that is a compliment and is not the first I have ever given Zach and won't be the last.
His defense has been scetchy at best, but he proved he could score and all last offseason I said that McCabe, White and Marble would lead Iowa while the freshman got comfortable...that didn't happen. Zach was a starter that turned into the 8th guy and not because all the guys behind him improved.
He plays hard though and is tough which gives him a free pass. Zach is the only guy that is that apparently...
Okay, I simply asked how one would consider McCabe losing weight is going to affect his defensive game.
McCabe plays hard, I get that, but playing hard and putting effort in don't always mean positive results. When McCabe is on the floor you see him a lot and as I have said before there is a reason for it. McCabe takes a lot of shots, if and only if, he hits his first one. Defensively McCabe averaged more fouls per game than any other Iowa player...again, but he dropped it from 3.4 pg last year to 2.6 pg this year. The issue with McCabe defensively is this: He doesn't move his feet and can't contest shots.
this reminds me of a year ago post that Eric May wasn't any good, had no value, couldn't shoot very well, and should never see the floor except in blowouts........
I will be VERY surprised to see Zach play the 5. I believe you'll see JU or KM with more minutes at the 5 than ZM.
Just my $.02 .. ..
GO HAWKS!!!
Stop bashing on McCabe...
1. He could kick your a$$.
2. He's going to be quick enough to do it even if you run, VERY soon.
I am still holding out hope for Zach in a very specialized role at the 5. I mentioned it back in March and I will go into it again. You could create a scenario where the second unit could run a Hoiberg offense with ZM at the 5 to draw the other teams center out to the arc. If you have RDM at the PG, JO at the 2, Jok at the 3, Uthoff at the 4 and ZM at the 5, there are bona fide 3-point shooters at every position. It opens the lane for RDM to take the other teams PG down to the basket and put up one of those runners and possibly get the old-fashioned 3-point play. RDM excells at getting to the FT line at the very least. Plus, you would likely start to pile up the fouls on the other team's guards. In this scenario, when the opposing defense starts to help out, that is when RDM dishes out to the arc for whomever is open. All 4 of those guys can nail the 3. They will have to. Make them PAY!
Defensively - well man-to-man would be a challenge. Granted. Conceded. However, there is some serious "wingspan" in this line-up and I think the Hawks played very well in the 3-2 zone last year. I think that could work. It is an offense that would clearly feature our best player - RDM. The whole thing revolves around him and his decision-making (and the ability for the other 4 to knock it down). He would have serious size advantage over the opposing point guard. So much so, that the defense would almost certainly switch the PG off to JO or Jok - so that opens up their ability to post up, too.
Again we are talking about the second unit here. A total change of pace from the first unit, where you would feature RDM, Aaron White, Besabe and Woody getting to the rim and/or kicking it out to Gesell or White or RDM if the path to the rim is blocked. (White needs to work on that 3-pointer this off-season)
Probably wishful thinking. If they are asking ZM to lose weight, the probability of that kind of offense gets really small, since it requires the 5 to be an outside threat. Niang provides that with the Clones. Besabe, Woody and Oleseni do not have that outside threat capability, and therefor allows the defensive center to sag in and clog the lane. No clue about Meyer or what he brings to the table.
I suspect they will see a lot of that offense when they go to Paris and London and play European teams.
ZM was MIA for much of the NCAA men's BB schedule during his JR yr. But FM knows JO, KM, JU, and AW can give VIP minutes at the 3, 4, & 5 this YR. ZM can be the bench MVP if his POE is better FG and FT percentage. While the MOP may be RDM, ZM can be a lot like EM, and FWIW, may be used when SOS is needed defensively. He won't have more PPG or MPG, but it won't be needed with PJ and JU here. This may be TMI but thought it needed to be posted ASAP. TYVM!
Man, I love Shane.
I wish you were a hot, single chick...but alas, my luck just isn't all I had hoped it would be...
