McCabe resembling Jess Settles

McCabe is like post injury late 90s Settles. Lacks the explosiveness and quickness of pre injury Settles.

I agree.

Anyone who thinks McCabe resembles the real Settles is either too young to remember Settles, or tripping in a Frantasy land.

He might be getting bigger, but his game is much more different than Settles (unless Fran changes that). Jess couldn't shoot half as good as Zach and Zach can't rebound half as good as Jess could. They share the same intensity for the game, but Settles was more physically gifted, while Zach is a better shooter.

Jess wasn't a good shooter, but he was a GREAT scorer. He had an amazing feel for the game, he got in the right places when he had to. Zach is a good basketball player, but he lacks that "feel". He always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That was the bull in the china shop Frosh Zach you are describing.
Last year, he started to get a real feel for the college game, when to drive, when to pull up,when to post up....''always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time''? Dead wrong. His BB IQ jumped dramatically last year.

Now, as for the Settles comparison...Jess was better,no doubt. More athletic, quicker, better jumper, and extreme BB IQ....but Zach is still very solid.

I am happy with Zach. Settles is gone no matter how much I loved to watch him play. Zach is coming along very well. The difference between year one and two is enormous. Plus I am certain that his overseas play in Eastern Europe has helped. They play very tough and with intensity......

Zach could be depended to score under the basket time and again and if he improves as much this year, he will be hard to keep off the floor......

It all remains to be seen.....

I agree, that's why I said shooter.
I think Zach's feel for the game has gotten exponentially better over the course of the last few seasons. He's really improved on a lot of facets of his game since becoming a Hawkeye. He is one of the most underrated players on the team.

I don't expect McCabe to get to the level of Settles, but anything close would be a great accomplishment.

However, as previously stated, their games aren't very similar.

No, it is not dead wrong. Last year he averages 21 mpg and 3.4 fouls per game. Compare that to White and Basabe, who played similar minutes, but averaged almost half that.

All I know is, if I had a quarter for every time some d-bag announcer said "Jeff" Settles instead of Jess, I'd be retired and livin' large in Barbados.

Zach was a 6' 6.5'' former guard who is guarding giant centers like Sullinger,Nix,Payne,Sampson III,Leonard,Bergrenn, and Morgan, and is a physical player,so yea,he fouled a bit more than those guys. Zach is not a leaper,so he is a pusher and tries to draw charges. He did a great job defensively in the paint last year considering his size and athletic shortcomings. His job is to bring the physicality, and fouls are not an indication of a lack of BB IQ.

Most of his fouls came from not moving his feet. It will improve over time

Jess Settles was excellent with the ball, very gifted inside and out. He had a passion for the game and a skill level to match. Had he not been injured, he would have been one of the best ever. Jess was a fabulous rebounder and like Mike Gesell, was always around the ball. I love Zach McCabe but I don't see him as a Jess Settles type...except for his passion and desire to improve.

Again, jack as , go home

Bad take.

Agree...I went to school with a kid that was at a camp with Settles and he had a broken/sprained right hand, either way he was essentially one-handed. One player at the camp blocked Settles and said the most common saying. Apparently, it ticked Settles off enough to run the kid over and over to get MVP of the camp.
The scorer comparison for Settles is true, they guy knew how to flat out score, do whatever it took. I think some forget just how great Settles was prior to his injury, flat out stud from day one.

Settles was definitely a good player. Sucks he was hurt, but he did finish strong tho. He came on towards the end. Played through the pain. I remember the Indiana game. Bob Knight shook Davis' hand and started walking off the court. He stopped and turned around just to walk up to Jess and shake his hand. Then left the court.... If you make that good of an impression that Bob Knight goes out of his way to shake your hand, then you are definitely a good player.
