McCabe in at 2:56

I tend to think the coach knows his players well enough to know who should be in the game. But I have to admitt haveing the same result over and over is getting pretty old. Gabe is playing well but I thought Woody had one of his better games too.

I was surprised to see McCabe in toward the end of the game. McCabe struggles in the big games against the athletic teams. He is just a step too slow. Sadly, I hate to admit it but when he fouled out I thought that was the best part about his night.

Does anyone remember who was in the game in overtime when Costello missed the 2nd FT and MSU grabbed the board, then shot and missed and grabbed the board again, and then shot and made a 2 pt FG?

McCabe had fouled out already so I know he wasn't in there but iirc we went small again with Oglewinkel.

This is the first time I have had a problem with Gabe's lack of minutes. He was fantastic at defending the pick and roll last night.

Oglesby got a lot of PT last night. OT was pretty much Gesell, Marble, Oglesby, White and Basabe after Woody had won the jump ball. Oglesby actually started the OT period in place of Basabe.

You are still an idiot for referring to him as Oglewinkel. The comparison isnt even close.

Pretty sure it was White who was down on the block and he was supposed to 'block' his out but didn't.

Olesani is very limited offensively. MSU would take whoever GO is guarding and put him on the perimeter where GO is very weak.

Weak on the perimeter? No offense, but Gabe shines out there. His ball screen hedge and recovery is as good as anyone in the country.

The went over the head of White, terrible play that was very costly.

Actually the stats comparison is pretty close between Jo and Bawinkle:
MPG PPG FG % 3 pt. FG
JO 17.5 5.5 35% 33.6%
DB 16.2 3.5 36% 36%

The difference appears that JO takes 1-2 more shots per game that Devon did over their careers. Jo spends a lot of time on the floor vs. man-to-man, doing absolutely nothing.

Sure is, WTF?

They are one in the same. Neither should play significant roles in a top flight D1 program. They are what I would call great practice players. They can light up the scoreboard when there is nothing but dirty towels in the stands but once the lights come on and there is pressure, it's game over. He could quite possibly be the best practice player to ever play the game.

If you look at the 'success' that Ogelwinkel has had this and last year, it's in games (with one exception) where the outcome was already decided. The clear exception this year was the Minny game where he shot lights out early on. In every other game this year the dude becomes a turtle and adds almost no offensive threat. He should fill a role on this team. That role is shoot when he's in the game but it's up to Fran to take the kid out when he starts missing.

Don't get me wrong, I think the kid has talent. He has a beautiful shot with decent feet and does an average job of guarding wing players. He, like all other hawkeyes, plays with passion and fire. I admire that in a player. I don't fault him at all, I fault the person that is putting him in these situations and is unable or unwilling to pull the drain plug in time.

The bolded part is absolutely true and that fact should halt any comparison of Oglesby to Balwinkle.

Do you chart the shots that all the Iowa players make in regards to whether the outcome was decided or just Oglesby's?

Dude is shooting over 50% from deep this year and Iowa would only have 3 losses total if he played more than 1 game in the non conference slate.

There is so much wrong with this post that I don't even know where to start. JO is 5x the player that Balwinkle was, it's not even close. Quit making JO a scapegoat. He's definitely not the reason we lost last night. His defense is very solid and he doesn't make mistakes. And like somebody already pointed out, the kid is shooting 50% from beyond the arc, but yeah, let's just go ahead and bench our best 3-point shooter. Great idea, brah.

I never said plant him on the end of the bench and let moss grow over him.. jeebuz chrimes some of you are worse than women when it comes to misinterpreting statements.

The kid is a ROLE player at best. ROLE players don't log 24 minutes and score 3 points, they play 5-8 minutes unless on-fire and then you ride them until they stop producing.....then back to the bench.
Here is a really interesting fact that you might find interesting:

In conference games where Oglewinkel has taken 2 or fewer three-point shots, we have lost 3 of the 4 games.

Get him in the game, green light him, if he makes then ride him until he stops shooting, if not then get him back on the bench. It's really that simple.

That's called good defense......The other teams know he's a shooter, so Josh gets the extra special treatment by not getting very many looks...

That 'extra special' treatment isn't getting other players open or creating better looks for the other 4 on the floor. In fact, I can make an argument that our offense stalls and takes on a life of it's own when Oglewinkel enters the game. He can't create his own so nearly every one of the Hawks are setting screens for the kid to curl around. It's almost like they are focusing on getting him his shot at the detriment of moving the ball like they normally do. We did the same thing last year.

This was because White went straight for the ball instead of the block out. The second rebound is because we were scrambling. White missed more than one key block out. Gabe missed many while he was in there. Of course, that's usually what I'm watching as that's where I played.

Olesani is very limited offensively. MSU would take whoever GO is guarding and put him on the perimeter where GO is very weak.

How did Valentine get his dunk? Gabe went for a mediocre head fake. He needs to play better position defense (which I've said all season) and not go for the blocked shot. Blocked shots are NOT defense, they are a last resort.
