McCabe has to stop shooting so much

People can take this as a bash thread if they want, but here are the facts:

1. Of the Top 10 players in minutes played on the team, McCabe puts up the most shots per 40 minutes than all but one player....Marble.

2. Of the Top 10 players in minutes played on the team, McCabe has the worst effective FG% on the team at 46.67%.

So the worst shooter on the team, statistically, is taking the 2nd most shots per 40 minutes. All that does is take away better scoring opportunities from other players. Every other player on the team, save for Marble, shoots better than 50% in effective FG%.

I'm not saying there aren't other things he brings to the team because there is. But coming into the game and hoisting three after three and not being able to hit your bunnies (he's the worst shooting player on the team from 2pt range at 42%) is killing us right now. He has a role, but it cannot be by being the 2nd most prolific on the team in field goal attempts.

He's been awful but I didn't mind all but 1 of his shots yesterday. He just needs to make them.

I think he was rushing them yesterday. As I stated in another thread that OSU was the leading 3 pt. percentage defense in the nation. If the look isn't there or the shot simply isn't falling we need to abandon the mindset of working the outside and go inside. If anything going inside will hopefully open up the spacing on the outside to give us better looks. IMO we shot way too many 3s from the onset of this game and I think it might have been a different outcome if we attacked the rim instead.

Ha ha ha, I think that is the OPs point.... he isn't making them. Can't keep throwing up shots if you can't shoot.

To the OPs point, the solution is to stop playing him so much. Last night he had the 4th most minutes on the team. That is ridiculous. I wouldn't play him more than 6-8 min at most.

I agree. He shouldn't play so much, but when he does play, I don't mind him shooting. Going into last night he was a 35% 3 point shooter. That's not bad.

Spider, you make very good points and have the numbers to back it up. But at the same time, who is going to hit the shots? You can't go inside all game when nobody can hit a 3. And no one can create a shot, so McCabe feels he has to.

So, yes he is probably forcing things. But until someone steps up and hits some shots, I'm not going to tell him to stop.

If McCabe isn't going to shoot then he doesn't even need to play. He's not getting minutes for his mid-range game, inside game, or defense.

And he is now 6/25 (24%) in B1G play from 3 point range. So he was 5/19 (26.3%) going into last night during conference action.

vs. Ohio State this year 1-16 FG .063 1-11 3pt FG .091

In our losses this year 10-36 FG .278 6-21 3pt FG .286

Somebody has to shoot. Josh O is a reluctant volume shooter. White can't shoot even when wide opened. Uthoff looks uncomfortable out there. Marble already shoots a lot--I don't think more shots is going to improve his efficiency, but I could argue he needs to be shooting more. Gessell could hoist up a few more 3s - if for nothing else to pull defenders out on to him.

Perhaps we get a Jok some more run as he is willing to jack up shots. But I'm not sure that is the answer to our shooting.

No not bad, and I'm not trying to argue, but I seem to recall a majority of those going in early in the year and padding his yearly stats some. Big difference hitting them vs. ranked opponents compared to patsys at home. This isn't only his problem though, we lack clutch shooters all over right now. A game by game breakdown of his shooting vs. what opponents would be interesting.

Or maybe we learn how to run set plays that result in good entry passes to the post, putting our bigs in solid position to score or be fouled instead of jacking up shots with players hitting only 24% in BIG play? And I know others aren't shooting well, but they aren't the liability he is on defense/ball handling etc. They at least add something somewhere.
