Maurice Fleming article: "perspective"

Wow. Most of us have no idea what it is really like for many of these young intercity kids. His words below make it sound like such a normalcy. No wonder these kids get sucked into gang lifestyle. It's normal to them. His friends that are gang members?? Whew. That's telling. It makes me so happy he is appreciative of a city like Iowa City and taking advantage of what if offers.

-- Said Fleming of his mom: "She means the world to me. Even gang members who are my friends, they're telling me my mom is a special lady."

-- Fleming said he's beyond fortunate to attend Iowa. It's quiet in Iowa City, he said, with "no gunshots, and you don't have to look over your shoulder every five minutes."

-- "You don't have to be worried that you're going to cause any gang-related rivalries," Fleming said. "Just being here at the University of Iowa, it's making me a better man. ... I don't know where I'd be if I hadn't gotten this opportunity."

Truly a sad story. Sometimes we have to suffer through a tragedy in order to put life in perspective. Credit should go to Fleming and his mother for going down the right path.

This young man could be down on things since he's a backup. We had great projections for him coming out of HS. This young man is centered...he's a contributor on Special teams. Unless King or Mabin make the jump, he may never start until his senior year. But what a great young man and example. So happy he is a Hawkeye.
