Matt Nelson

I didn't get to see the whole Purdue game. Did Nelson play? How'd he do? It would be really nice to see him turn it on in the last few games and headed into next season--we need DE's. Iowa hasn't seemed to have a lot of success with the tall skinny body type. Austin Vier, Riley McMinn come to mind. Nelson does seem a bit more stout than the aforementioned. Any insight into his development would be appreciated.

Yeah he has played more and more as the year has gone on.

Needs to add a little more bulk and a smidge more quickness but for a young guy he will be a player. He has the frame and length that you like to see at the spot because he could cause some real problems.

Thanks for the assessment. Nebraska would be a great game for Matt to break out. I'd take 2.5 sacks :.) The new recruit Anthony Nelson from the Des Moines area also seems to have a similar body type, but more gangly. Guys this tall and skinny just don't seem to appear on D1 defensive lines. I'm hoping Doyle can add 50 lbs. to his 220 frame...but that seems to be asking a lot for a guy that skinny.

Baylor has a really tall DEnd and of course they can be effective like a Ted Stork Hendricks with the rangy arms, leverage, etc. Just have to see what improvements he made.

Slater from the STL area is listed as a DE. He may play there next year, but I think he ends up at DT as he came in at 265. He was a linebacker in HS--would be a nice compliment to Hesse and Nelson next year. Hits like a bull.
