I'm a firm believer that it's the coach's job to manage all aspects of the team. That said, it shouldn't be his responsibility to get a team pumped up and motivated to play a rivalry game, that falls on the players, because honestly if their heads aren't in it there's nothing a coach can do get the best out of his players. I agree with the fact that if a starter isn't preforming it's time to get the #2 in, but aside from making substitutions its the players who need to be held accountable for not being fired up to play a trophy game.
Well said and it is a precariously fine line to toe, benching a player/calling them out or just not calling their number. We witnessed firsthand how much Mossbrucker’s confidence/ability waned after not getting called on in the clutch 2 years ago. KF got blamed for that as well from some fans, it seems he can’t win.
