Marshalltown

Scary day up there... Pretty amazing that I haven't heard of any fatalities as many of them as their were and where all they hit. Mother nature is undefeated... You can dodge her but you aren't beating her.

To quote Dan Patrick on E-SEC-PN back in the day, "You can't stop Mother Nature, you can only hope to contain her!".

Sort of in the vicinity I guess, but not really close. Am more familiar with the area from going there to the orthodontist, going to relatives, etc. when I was growing up.
Same here. From Conrad, so Marshalltown is where we go if we need something fast or for doctor's appointments. My wife and I are in Vegas this week so she was frantically trying to call our kids and relatives to make sure they were alright. Luckily everyone was safe but some of her clients did lose their houses due to this storm.

I've lived in Iowa almost my entire life and have yet to see a tornado, knock on wood! Have heard plenty of sirens going off.

On a side note, the great Adolph Rupp apparently coached in Marshalltown. What is funny, not the sport that is obvious. How the hell does that happen. See Wiki -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolph_Rupp

High school coaching
Rupp began his career in coaching by accepting a teaching job at Burr Oak High School, Kansas. After a one-year stay, Rupp moved on to Marshalltown, Iowa, where he coached wrestling, a sport he knew nothing about at the time and learned from a book. He led the Marshalltown team to a state wrestling title in 1926.[7]

Heard the sirens a fair amount as well back when I lived there, but I never saw a tornado. I guess that's because I always ducked and covered in the basement when I heard the siren go off unless it was noon on Saturday and they were testing the siren. These men with kids filming tornadoes, ugh, I just, I just. Ugh.

What's I thought was interesting about the pictures/videos is the twitter feed of news agencies (even Japanese!) requesting permission to use the videos. It's crazy how fast these videos can spread compared to when I was a kid.

I am glad there were only a few injuries and no reported fatalities, also glad that I don't have to hunker down in our basement bathroom and have my boys wear their bike helmets here in IC

Dude your lucky. Had one go right across the road from our farm house growing up. Saw it tear up our pasture toss around our cows and trees. Scariest thing ever that's happened to me I was like 11 at the time.

Seen about 15 in my life. Am a bit of an amateur storm chaser, but not a crazy one. When I was a kid, we were driving between Kalona and Washington and were right next to Jack Hamilton's Club House when it got hit. I was old enough to remember the hail and wind. We pulled over. Can also remember hearing people inside screaming afterwards. One hit one of our farms we were at planting garden potatoes. Just got married and I saw the one that hit Albert Lea from just a few blocks away. That one was wicked. I would have had a pic but my wife pulled my arm as it passed between trees from my view. Most of the others were at a distance except for one that was forming over head. We were out driving for another reason and the storms came up quickly.

My wife is terrified of storms. A few years ago I knew their were tornadoes in the general area, but not nearby. I was looking on radar to see if we had anything to worry about. Was still trying to get a good look on the computer when my normally frantic about storms wife says calmly "I think there is a tornado coming." My reply, "OK Dear just a minute" blowing her off. 30 seconds later, she say, "I think you really should come here. I think it's a tornado". "Just a sec" I replied. She announced she was taking the kids to the crawl space. Then the sirens went off. Still not believing it I went to the door and could see debris flying from a woods about 3 blocks away.

You can usually see this on your phone radar now. Helps know where they are really at.

what about those 17 people who died yesterday on that boat ride in Missouri. The captains of those boats knew a system was coming and they still took people out. The video of those boats trapped out on the water when the storm hit was pretty sad.

Absolutely senseless. No reason to go out there. The captain and other representatives of the company who allowed that need to be charged with manslaughter.

Yah big wuss. A true Iowan goes outside and watches the sky to see what is going on when the clouds are green and black. Last year, I watched a tornado travel at least 20 miles along and parallel to the road I live on, and fortunately pass by the house a little to the north. You can duck into the cellar at the last moment if you really need to.

JK a little bit of course, but I do like to watch storms if I can. The farmstead I speak of was actually wiped out by a huge tornado 54 years go.

Glad to hear that there were no serious injuries. Scary stuff.

When I lived in Iowa, I experienced 3 or 4 tornadoes. The closest call was one that occurred in Dubuque around '74 or '75 when I was a little kid. We were living in the trailer park (go figure...) on the west edge of town (There was a drive-in theater right next to it. The Super 20 or something like that). Three mobile homes were destroyed. I remember some dork panicked and ran out of his trailer and jumped into a ditch, leaving his wife and kids in the trailer, LOL. The next morning there was a cow in the adjacent field that was walking around with a 2x4 sticking out of it's side.

I was also near a tornado that hit Ryan a few years later.

I saw on the news they said the boats had life jackets, but know word yet if they were used. I wonder if the Captains of the boats survived? If so, they are in serious trouble
I did not realize those were enclosed boats. I assumed they were old military type DUC-W boats with open tops. Yes, someone is in trouble. They had 28 minutes of warning that the storm was on the way.

Why would anyone go out on the water that looked liked something shaped like a shoe box?
