This will backfire some years for sure, but it will instantly endear whomever the coach is to every high school coach in Iowa.

Create AND Fund the Iowa Mr. Basketball Scholarship.

No matter the talent level, if you win Mr. Basketball in the state of Iowa, you have a full ride waiting for you on the Iowa Basketball team.

This will cost the coach a whopping $20K a year out of a at least 1.5 MM annual salary.

Most importantly, it gets kids in state dreaming of being Hawkeyes again and encourages what little division one talent there is in Iowa to stay in state and play for the Hawks.
 
So they would only get the scholarship if they come to Iowa?

Doesnt seem legal

Plus, if they are good enough to come to Iowa they would get a free ride anyways
 
OK then we can just reserve one schollie every year for Mr. Basketball, and if he deosn't want to come to Iowa, that's his decision, but the schollie is waiting for him.
 
Good idea, while we are at it we should consider selecting our next coach via a reality show.

We could put Jon, Deace, Mike Hlas, Pat Harty, Forever Hawk, and that guy with the huge man crush on Lon Kruger and put them in Tom Davis' house and we can let them select the new coach.

They could each stake thier horse and the winner would be decided by a shirtless professional wrestling tournament.

Looks like it is a good thing you work in accounting!
 
Here's another idea....How about you start AND fund the Mr. New Jersey basketball fund. Whoever Mr. New Jersey basketball is would get a full ride to Iowa. Sound good? It would broaden our recruiting base for sure.

I hope we can get a new coach that can get a Mr. Basketball from a different state that has a higher talent of basketball recruits.

Harrison Barnes kind of kills my argument this year but any other year I would take a Mr. Basketball from most other states.

This again comes back to why I want a coach who can recruit out of state. I don't care about Iowa ties. I want a guy who can bring guys from out of state and convince them to come to the University of Iowa to play because there is not enough in state talent to compete in the Big Ten.
