IOWA CITY, IA — University of Iowa wrestler Montell Marion has been permanently suspended from all activities related to the Hawkeye wrestling program. Marion, a sophomore who was the 2010 NCAA runner-up at 141 pounds, was arrested and charged with a DUI at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday in Iowa City.

“Due to Montell’s recent and previous violations of our student-athlete code of conduct, we have no choice at this point but to remove him from the Iowa wrestling program,â€￾ said University of Iowa Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Fred Mims. “It is very unfortunate. Montell has demonstrated great potential as a student and a student-athlete. He is someone the program will miss greatly. We all hope he is able to overcome this situation and find success in whatever he decides to do.â€￾

If Marion chooses to transfer to another NCAA institution, Mims said the University of Iowa Athletics Department would support a transfer pursuant to the NCAA’s one-time transfer policy.

Marion posted a 37-9 record in two seasons with the Hawkeyes. He picked up his first all-America honor this season, placing third at the 2010 Big Ten Championships. The Des Moines, IA, native posted a 11-3 dual record, going 6-2 in Big Ten duals and scoring 45 team points in dual competition after earning the 141-pound spot in the lineup in late December.

guess that answered my question wether or not they would release him after all the headaches

this is not an oh well situation this is one of our returning ncaa finalists

unlike basketball we can't lose a wrestler to transfer and then just put next guy in...even though we have wrestlers that can fill his shoes its going to be a big loss

It is a big Oh well when the kid can't get his head screwed on straight after multiple chances.

This is not an oh well situation i agree but on the other hand I think this is the right move for the University of Iowa. As much as his talent will be missed in the room he needs to get things going the right direction in life. I hope Montell can learn and benefit from this and succeed at whatever he chooses to do next.

Let's be honest though, he did have a very lucky draw to reach the finals in the first place and then upsets happened along the way to make the path that much easier, otherwise I don't think he would have been a finalist. It does hurt in that he was probably going to be an AA next year but I think Iowa will be just fine.

im not saying he shouldn't be released at all they are making the right decision without a doubt its stupid he did it in the first place

I kind of wish that Iowa would've put him on double secret probation.

That way next season we would have been able to read threads everyday about the speculation that our returning finalist was finally turning it around and would be back on the mat at any time. Only to have a mystery professor not give him a small grade change.

its almost like you are refering to somebody other the MM. Perhaps another wrestler who was runner up his sophomore year?

slaton and mm are going to start their own college

university of south harmon
institute of technology

Well at least this opens up a scholarship that can be used on someone that can pull their head out of their a55 and be just as successful.

not to nitpick but remember it's not like football or basketball where it frees up a whole scholarship. It will free up some money that can be used though, you are right about that. Just tough to know how much.

I think this was strike 3-no more chances.

Yeah, I wasnt sure exactly how it worked but I knew he was getting something that can now go to a new recruit that might actually want it.
