Marcus Paige to UNC

Of course I'm biased, as I always think they should come to Iowa. But if he doesn't want to come to Iowa, then fine, nothing can be done about that particular kid. Fran will find others, and I think he will find good players, who will make Iowa a winner again. There's a lot of them out there, Iowa doesn't need them all, just their fair share. With that said, it is peculiar that all of these kids from Linn-Mar leave the state.

I'm very intersted to see how this all works out with Marcus. I've always thought he was very good, but I kind of assumed that most NC recruits were a step away from the NBA. I'm not pulling sour grapes, he would have been a huge get for Iowa, or ISU, but I hope he didn't out kick his coverage here.

Paige kind of reminds me of a guy like Nolan Smith at Duke. Excellent player, but he wasn't a step from the NBA when he was a freshman. He was a 4-year guy, and now he's one of the best college players in the country.

I am beyond sick of Roy Williams. How many players has this state lost to him now?

I guess the reality though is that we don't have a shot at these types of players until we start winning again. And by that, I mean getting back to the NCAA Tournament with regularity. Then MAYBE we can keep coaches like Roy Williams, etc. from stealing every last highly-rated player that comes out of the state.

Weren't we winning when he stole LaFrentz, Collison and Hinrich?

I'm not sure what you took away from my comment but I was referring to the Flying Spaghetti Monster:

Haha...my bad!

Why do people keep saying Roy W. is "stealing" players? He's not stealing a thing. In situations like this, it is an opportunity to reflect on our weaknesses and correct them, rather than lash out at the strengths of others.

Lash out? Its a pattern that has been going on for decades now. The best players in the state have gone out of state.

Marcus Paige and his family can quit sitting behind the Iowa bench now.

Go watch games in North Carolina.

At least Iowa can now focus on other recruits.

Yes on Lafrentz.

As for Collison and Hinrich, weren't both Iowa and ISU going through coaching changes at the time these two players would have been recruited? That had to have had some sort of impact when those players had KU offers. Regardless, you have pointed out just a few of the players that we did NOT get.

But there are some highly rated players that we DID get - Ricky Davis and Chris Kingsbury are a couple that come to mind. I also seem to remember Jeff Horner, Greg Brunner, and Adam Haluska all staying in-state, and they were 4-star recruits. We got Tyler Smith to commit from out of state, who was 4-star. But those recruits were back in the days when we weren't as god-awful as we've been the past few years.

There was also Glen Worley. I can't remember his list of offers, but am sure he was a highly-rated in-state player that committed to us.

I've got to believe that being sub-.500 the past few years might have a little bit of something to do with our current recruiting struggles.

I agree, i think we should be able to pull the best in-state recruits. Were Brunner, Kingsbury and Horner top 50 in the country? Even an in-state guy going to ISU is better than out of state IMO.

You want to keep your in-state prospects in-state. It's as good as stealing when an out-of-state school takes Iowa's top prospects. If we were Texas and we were talking about football, that's a little different, as there's too much talent to keep in. But in states with smaller populations and fewer schools, one expects the in-state schools to keep those players. There's nothing wrong with a guy like Williams doing that. He should be. We've done the same thing, though not to schools in states with similar population sizes.

I am getting sick of Roy Williams ALWAYS being the guy that takes those players, though.

I'm not sure about Top-50, but I'm sure those guys were at least Top 100. Kingsbury was a McDonald's All-American I believe, so I would guess a definite "yes" on him. He was actually from Ohio I believe, not in-state, although I heard somewhere he had Iowa roots. Point being, if in the past we had gotten good out-of-state players, it should be easier for us to keep the in-state players at home.

I agree, I would almost rather see good players go to ISU than to leave the state completely. Even though that might not necessarily be good news for the Hawks if ISU starts cleaning up, but it's bad for the state as a whole if players keep leaving for schools like UNC.
