Marble had a great game, but Gesell was the MVP

Love what Gesell did today. But Marble was the MVP and best player on the court

This is undoubtedly true. Some folks are thinking too hard on this one. Gesell doesn't always get the credit he deserves, but yesterday was Marble's day.

Yeah but if Gabe was redshirted, we'd be seeing a lot more of McCabe, Basabe, and Uthoff in the post, and you saw how that 'screwed up' the Hawks in the last 4 or so minutes of the game against Michigan, today. Iowa's coaching staff made the best move for Iowa in not redshirting Gabe.

Gabe would not be redshirting this year. tm and I were talking about how not redshirting him his freshman year was a mistake as he hardly played and clearly wasn't ready yet.

Gesell has brought something to this Iowa team that we've been missing for a few years. A true PG that can penetrate the defense. He's been able to break down the opponents defense which has helped get our other scorers open looks. He's playing out of his mind right now.

I meant redshirt as a freshman. Meaning he'd still be on the court now, but we'd be getting the Gabe we'll see next year, instead of the Gabe we're getting now.

I guess it's better for Iowa to be sucky in the post 2 years ago (without Gabe and Woody). Do you think Iowa would have gotten into the NIT that 2011-2012 season without the contributions of Gabe? Important for Iowa and the program's progression to be in the NIT that 2011-2012 season?

? Gabe was basically a reserve player that season. Brommer played before him.

He averaged 5 mpg as a freshman. Iowa lost every single conference game that he scored a point or grabbed a rebound in, and he never scored more than 4 points or had more than 3 rebounds in a conference game. He contributed very little as a freshman. So yes, I think Iowa would have made the NIT without him.

The catch 22 is would he be this good if he had redshirted or not...because I don't believe he would be because those court minutes were few and far between but you can't simulate that.

Michigan's lousy transition defense helped with that, too. I've never seen a hot shooter get that many open looks in transition.

Michigan was so lazy getting back on defense that it was ridiculous and weird. They are tied for first place in the conference and they acted like they were playing out the string. That compared with Iowa playing with maximum effort equaled a bad, bad night for Michigan.

Well, the game was over at 3 pm not at night, but the rest of your post is right on.

That is definitely possible. I think it was the Archie injury that cemented the decision of Olaseni not redshirting if memory serves me correct.

Gabe's just made insane improvement this year. Not redshirting him is going to wind up being the biggest regret of this coaching staff's tenure, IMO. I think be he'd be a bonafide NBA prospect if he had an extra year.

It sickening to think how good he could be in two years and how pointless his first year was.

I dont think that idea applies as much in this situation as it does to someone like Jok who needs to see minutes this year so he understands where he needs to be next year.

Gabe was so incredibly lost his first year and played so little that I dont think he gained a whole lot from the experience, he just needed time to figure out the game in general.

I wouldnt be surprised to see him get drafted after next year.
