Marble had a great game, but Gesell was the MVP

I told you all Mike was becoming this team's best player after the Ohio State loss but nobody wanted to listen. He is the best on ball defender because he has the quickest feet on the team. He has improved at driving with the ball and his A/TO has improved because he's gotten stronger and the new rules allow him to not be mugged constantly. If he were to shoot more people would notice he may just be the best player on the team. He won't do that though because he's smart and plays a team game just like Fran wants him to. Oh and notice that most of Marble's shots were open looks set up by none other than Mike.

Michigan's lousy transition defense helped with that, too. I've never seen a hot shooter get that many open looks in transition.

Oh I know I was just pointing out that it wasn't all Marble. It was the combination of Mike pushing the ball, finding the open guy, Michigan playing sluggish defense, and Marble making the shot.

Sometimes the guy that gets the assist is more important to the play than the scorer. The article talks about how the effectiveness of the play changes and how to quantify it. I say gesell is overall our most important player right now.

I'm not sure I can call Mike the MVP with how well Dev shot the 3 ball. With that said, I'm starting to get really excited about this guys future and potential.

Agree about him being the best on ball defender and underrated. I think he will continue to improve his finishing and his outside shooting which will make him a top notch scorer and hopefully Josh and Peter will make it rain when he sets them up with looks.

I've been as impressed with Gesell this year as anyone other than Olaseni...he is really starting to play like a veteran and I think he is going to be a big time player for Iowa.

I would give Gabe the most improved this year over Gesell; unless, Gesell leads IA undefeated in the conference from here on out.

Even then, it's Gabe. The only way, IMO, that Gabe doesn't end up being the most improved player is if someone gets hurt and Gesell puts the team on his back, Gatens-style.

Gabe's just made insane improvement this year. Not redshirting him is going to wind up being the biggest regret of this coaching staff's tenure, IMO. I think he'd be a bonafide NBA prospect if he had an extra year.

Agreed on the red shirting of Olaseni. I was mad after he hardly played his freshman year. Also just to clarify, I still think Marble is this team's best player, Mike is just simply growing into becoming the best player. By that I mean he could be next year.

I agree. I think a lot of people, both among our fan base and around the Big Ten, are going to be surprised at how good he looks next season. I think we'll see him showcase a lot more of his talents once he's asked to do more, similar to Stauskas. Stauskas is a much better player than anyone gave him credit for last year, and Gesell is in a similar boat.

when gesell gets as comfortable kicking off the drive and running the break as he is with his drives (I love how aggressive he's getting with attacking the basket), he's going to shred teams next year.

A lot of great individual performances results in a very good team effort and ultimately an impressive win. I saw a lot of good things from a lot of guys in this game.

Sounds good can't wait to watch the game on my DVR when I get home from work.

Fran made an interesting coment in his post game interview today. He said Mike was really sick during the Ohio St. game & probobly should have not even played that game. Don't like to assume things but I'am guessing must have been flu. Pretty tough to hang with a player the caliber of Aaron Craft when 100% much less when ill,(I know alot of pepole on this board don't care for Craft like him or not he is a great player) I think the fact that MG played in that game at all shows just the type of leader he is & will be in the future. Wish we didn't have to wait a week to watch this team play again but the kids could use the rest. One game at a time next up, Penn St. GO HAWKS!!

What made Gesell so good and why he's important to the team is his energy. He and Gabe bring it every game. This game though it seemed everyone had more urgency... I'm wondering if Fran had some words to say after Ohio State. This is the way Marble needs to play every game even if he doesn't shoot the percentage he needs to be taking shots aggressively and looking to lead. If there is a star on this team it's him - he just needs to own it more.

Yeah but if Gabe was redshirted, we'd be seeing a lot more of McCabe, Basabe, and Uthoff in the post, and you saw how that 'screwed up' the Hawks in the last 4 or so minutes of the game against Michigan, today. Iowa's coaching staff made the best move for Iowa in not redshirting Gabe.
