Marble at the Point

I was thinking yesterday watching the game, that Marble has had some games that he has struggled in, and that is probably due to having to handle the backup PG duties. That said does anyone else think his time at PG will help his overall game next year, and the following years? I am beginning to think so, especially in Fran's offense. He will be a guy who can create his own shot by taking it to the basket and finishing either at the rim or pulling up from 10-15 ft. I think his time at PG has forced him to get better at handling the ball, and this will help his game in the next few years.

I really liked how he attacked the lane yesterday. When he has a shorter guard defending him, he needs to take advantage of that. Hopefully his FT shooting improves. Lots of upside with Jr.

He's only playing that point because he has to. I would be if Cully was healthy Marble would rarely be there, if ever. I like his ability to create his own shot, but he REALLY needs to work on his mid range shooting.

I realize he is only playing the PG because he has to. Next year hopefully he won't have to play PG at all. I just think that it will help his overall game in the following years. Sometimes the best way to learn something is being thrown into the fire....which is what happened to Marble playing the point.

The only thing playing the 1 right now will hurt is learning the 2. If he was playing the 2 or 3 right now, his game would likely he open for him to do the things he is comfortable doing. Playing the 1 will help his ball-handling, but if he was at the natural 2/3, he'd get more reps in his true position(s).

I like his confidence. He can sure find his way into the lane for a nice 8' attempt. Watching, your like no no no, he shoots & it's YES!!

Sometimes, he seems to force it at the wrong times, but he produces & plays under control.

We are just not used to having players like this for a couple years. Refreshing!

I think Marble is going to be a really good player on both ends of the court by the time he graduates.

Marble is a scorer, not necessarily in the same style/sense as his dad, but he will put points on the board. I'd argue coming out of high school, Devyn has a higher skill set than his father... just depends on how much he improves, but he has a great skill set and a high ceiling. He's also very young for a freshman, remember he just turned 18 this September, so he has some time for his body to fill out too. A lot of potential with Devyn.

Dean - totally agree on this helping Marble going forward. Here's Fran's response after the game about Marble.

Q. You mentioned the other day how you wanted to get Marble going and he comes out and gets 18 points for you.

COACH McCAFFERY: He was aggressive from the start. That's what we have been trying to get him to do, just be aggressive, and I played him a lot more, too, today, than I had been. Like I said part of his struggles are my fault, the fault of our situation. He's got to play the point.

To his credit he's done a really good job and hasn't complained about it. But being able to get him on the side, from the wing, out in transition, now you see the scorer that he can be, and it really picks up our team.

I said this in another thread but Marble just needs games. He's going to be good, how fast he becomes good will depend on the coach and how he can weather the times when Marble is struggling and not sit him.

agreed, I still think a healthy payne and cartwright can manage the point just fine. marble is a natural 2 or 3 wing player, Marble reminds me of jake Kelly, he can create off the dribble and shoot, both look like they have high bb IQ's, if he gets in the weight room he could be special.

If Baasbe, Cartwright, and Marble keep improving is this the best class we have recruited since Raveling's days? Hopefully we have some better days ahead.

You do realize that Cartwright is a Senior next year? You make it sound like he is a freshman.

I think playing the point has hurt Marble this year. We need him to do what he did against Indiana, which is be confident and attack the basket, pull up in the lane for jupmers, etc. I would rather see Stoermer get some more time at point, even if it is just to swing the ball and set other guys up. We need Marble's offense and he has a tough time doing anything against smaller, quicker pg's. The big ten has some really tough guards and Marble has seen quite a few already this season.

In the grand scheme of things, this is a developmental year for the entire team. It's like none of it counts except for the progress. Forcing the ball into the hands of Marble this season will be a tremendous benefit for him in the long run. It's going to make him a much better rounded player on and off the ball. The shooting skills are things he can work on in the off season.

Seeing the confidence build in a couple of the young guys as they start to understand the game at this level is going to speed up the progress of this rebuild. I believe that Marble and Besabe are going to be special and McCabe has a shot to be the same.

Cully missing all of this time will hurt because we're going to need him next season when I think this team will beging to be playing for something.
