QB Dekkers accused of betting on Iowa St. games

Hunter Dekkers has been accused of gambling on Iowa State sports, including football, and was charged Tuesday with tampering with records. Three other Iowa State athletes -- two current and one former -- also have been accused of gambling and tampering.

Dekkers and a soph (Sauser) charged with underage gambling; both bet around $3,000 total, both bet on ISU sports, including football.

But their recently graduated DL (Uwarzurike) placed over $21,000 worth of bets at ISU, including on ISU FB games. He is currently suspended indefinitely from the NFL for placing wagers involving his own team during his rookie year.

And Big 12 champ wrestler Paniro Johnson placed over $45,000 worth of underage bets during his freshman year, including about 25 on ISU sporting events.

There is some stupidity going on here, but we also have to admit the addictive nature of this hobby. College kids wagering 10s of thousands of dollars on sports is insane.

I know his law firm representing him must try to create doubt and put a spin on things, but I think case is pretty well a done deal. They have his phone records as well as his location while using his protected Iphone.

Reading their statement makes me think that they are trying to say the laws are unconsitutional and should be removed. So basically in a true justice sense, the laws are invalid, not that the laws weren't violated.

Some of these guys are in some serious hot water... These guys didn't seem to realize just how easily tracked these apps make it for investigators. What's worse is some had enabling parents involved. Yikes yikes yikes.

At least the dominos are starting to fall. I didn't want to go 3 weeks into the season before this happened. Drop the hammer now on all involved and let's rip the band aid off.

Afraid so... A baseball player had a very similar one already have his story dropped and our walk on kicker Bloms name just was as well. His mother was complicit with giving him phone/access to setup an account in her name. He bet the under on Iowa/ISU game of all things... So he's toast. But names are starting to drop anyway so we can figure out who all did what soon enough thankfully.

I asked a friend earlier today, why would any parent open up a gambling account for their kids? I guess I'm just an old fashioned, no-fun dad.

I have to believe if there were other similar situations those charges would have dropped by now as well. So, hopefully, losing the backup kicker is the extent of the real damage to Iowa football. There may be some smaller betting situation that require some NCAA sanctions. Hopefully even that is minimal.

If only our backup walk on kicker was the only one... Drip drip my friend. Noah Shannons name hasn't been rattled off yet and clearly it will be along with who knows who else else. I just hope Bloms is the worst one and the others won't be totally kicked off the team like he will be for it...

Unless he did all of it from his parents couch and not his dorm room or around campus where his parents wouldn't have even been at those times he's pretty much caught dead to rights... Bloms mom seems to have totally enabled him to do it. (which is wild as hell to me) I'm not as sure about Dekkers I haven't read all up on his deal yet.

What's even harder to grasp is... the kid is an exceptional student. Academic all Big Ten and Dean's list. You'd think he's smart enough to know better and Mom/Dad would be smart enough to tell him, "NO...don't screw up a good thing you've got going." Instead...they enable him. FFS!

Agreed 100%. I can't see Dekkers getting out of this one. With DCI already having his phone records (text, location and etc), and the fact his phone was password protected, it will be a very difficult defense. IMHO, he's done.

I will be curious if Johnson County goes after Blom's mom much like Story County did with Dekkers' parents. Right now, I think if I am both athletes, I would be much more worried about the criminal element of this case than NCAA eligibility.

I can't remember, but didn't someone on here post or maybe I read it somewhere, that lesser included infractions (based upon the amount of times an athlete wagered, amount and what sport or etc) were being dealt with with re-education or game suspension(s)?

Probably...altho it appears KFerentz wasn't aware of Blom's having betted on an Iowa game, so there could be others. It appears that criminal charges are only being brought against players who used false identities to place their bets. In other words, those who took pains to avoid prosecution and who demonstrated 'consciousness of guilt', as they say.
My guess is the others, like Shannon and other 'players to be named later', just placed their bets under their own account, without trying to so obviously conceal.
