Does anyone have the facts? There are some bad cops but would bet there are many more good ones. We never seems to hear the good things they do.

It's not good click-bait and doesn't draw eyeballs on screens to talk about the good things cops do.

If a cop ever does something heroic you're darn right it makes the news. The problem is, real life cops aren't like the ones in the movies. They are basically traffic enforcers with a domestic abuse call sprinkled in. Especially in a city like Des Moines. The only (good things) the media can really talk about is how many tickets are issued and I do randomly hear about those stats.

Try a ride-along. Your view will change.

You've been on one? What did you see that gives you a different impression? My post wasn't even so much about flaming cops as much as saying there isn't much going on in Iowa for a cop to be heroic.

I'm 40 and I don't think I've ever heard a first hand account of a cop saving the day. It obviously happens but it's obviously pretty rare around these parts. I have however heard quite a few stories where solving crimes wasn't worth the cop's time.

Understood. It varies a lot from town to town, for sure. Patrolling in Adel is a world of difference from Minneapolis. I've been on a ride along, it was interesting and very eye-opening. I'm also married to someone who works in emergency services...she's seen everything. What makes the news...is only the tip of the iceberg.

I have a lot of respect for anybody willing and able to do this kind of work.

If I was a policeman I'd love it if all I had to do is traffic enforcement with a dose of domestic abuse cases thrown in. Des moines, iowa has a population of over 200,000 and I'm sure that you would never be absolutely sure what might occur on the job. Any job where the persons health and life is at risk deserves the respect of its citizens. In 2016 two des moines police officers were murdered.

Cops just for the most part rub me the wrong way. The attitude you have to have to want to be a cop isn't something I mesh well with. You're right about the two cops that were murdered. But there were also lots of non cops that were murdered in 2016.

Are you talking about murder or a justifiable shooting? There is a big difference.
In all due respect....

Well, see that's just the thing. People are conditioned to automatically believe the killings/shootings were justified, because a cop did it... Hell, even in situations when it is obvious that the shooting(s) was not justified, courts still rule that the cop(s) acted reasonably. Flip these situations around, and the non-cop(s) is sitting in jail. There is an obvious double standard. You may be completely fine with that as most are, but you can't deny it to be true and be rational at the same time. :)

Let me ask you this: how can someone grant another person a right that he or she does not have himself or herself?

Well I guess since I've never sat on a jury in a cop shooting someone I would have to assume I would not be a good judge to decide if justifiable or not since I wouldn't have all the facts. Sometimes I don't really consider what I read in the news as facts.

I do have a right to defend myself with deadly force if I feel my life is threatened.

Well that's not really true. If it was true, everyone who ever killed anyone could just say they felt like their life was threatened and get off. Your opinion on whether you felt like your life was threatened wouldn't help at all in court.

It's for a jury to decide. There is a law - stand your ground. I believe that gives you the right to defend yourself with deadly force if needed. Each case is different. I do know if my life or family is threatened with harm I'll take my chance with a jury. George Zimmerman pleaded self-defense and a jury believed him with the evidence they heard. I don't believe he was a cop but I may be wrong.
