Magic on Marble

I think because Marble and his dad talked so much about the NBA during the course of his last season, it makes some wonder where his loyalty and motivational direction was really headed. In other words, was he putting the cart a bit before the horse? Dev before the team? Who knows for sure.

I'm sure we will miss the bulk of his production on the court this coming season, but maybe not the baggage that went with it.
Support from Dev's father is 'baggage'? Everyone with any BB ambition at all on the team wants to make the NBA. I think Dev put the NBA out there as motivation similar to what White is doing in interviews currently. White's father just wasn't a former Iowa star and NBA prospect. I'll take the Iowa and NBA lineage 'baggage'. NBA lineage certainly didn't do GR III, Tim Hardaway Jr., or the MI program any harm. Once again, blame on Dev for the 'collapse' is misplaced.

They were a moderately experienced team. Basabe and Mcabe didn't have major roles. When your starting 1 and 5 are underclass men that's not what I would call experienced.

They are going to be a legitimately experienced team this year.

Yes in this case I believe it is worth throwing it out there. Do I or you know for sure, no, but based on all of the NBA talk and the melt down to the end the year, I believe it is possible. And I think that "motivation" was more of a distraction than anything.

I don't believe Marble was the soul reason for the collapse, but he was part of the equation.

I don't think you'll ever see Fran McCaffery agree with you and he knows better than both of us. Do you really think he'd have devoted as much time, support, and effort post-season to RDM's draft lead-up if he thought Dev caused the skid at the end of the season? Fran didn't have to show near the support he did to reap benefits of Dev's success for the program. If that skid had anything to do with Dev, I think it was the team's dependency on him in spite of the fact that other talent was there. Now that he's gone, the team has to stand on it's own. We've seen some great performances this summer as they've realized that.

I doubt the skid had anything to do with Devon Marble, but its possible it had something to do with Roy Marble. Devon Marble was a hard worker and he did what the coaches wanted him to do. Iowa was a pretty young team in a lot of spots and they didn't really have very many options. They should have a lot of options this year.

I would hope so....he is the head coach. If not, I would be very worried. I don't believe Fran is the type of guy to rip his players in public and he is not going to bad mouth them (short of them doing something illegal). And, Fran can recruit boasting he got a player into the NBA. So, we are not going to see anything negative coming from Fran here. I would have expected/guessed for him to do as he did for Marble in his transition to the pros. He is a fairly wise guy and will minimize deficiencies behind the scenes.

I'm saying this is an observation of mine (Marble's/Daddy's NBA ambition and short comings in crunch time in his senior year) for one of the reasons for Iowa's melt down to end the year. Not saying for sure it is fact. Just observation.

It's my observation that it's much more likely to have a disruption on the team than off it (someone's dad). I observe that the skid started right when there was a public scandal on twitter involving a certain player. Interesting timing. That scandal caused a lot of dissension on impersonal message boards so I can only imagine what it caused amongst young teammates in a locker room. I further observe that the coach has barely mentioned that player since that incident and that that player has since been charged with assault. That player seems a much more likely candidate for dissension that caused a late-season collapse than someone's dad or a player that the head coach and teammates supported above what they had to in his NBA draft pursuit.

I agree with that observation with McCabe being a problem on the team. I also think it goes deeper than that though. But, yes McCabe was also a cancer.

Did you actually watch those last 8 games? Devyn Marble was tremendous in that stretch of games, averaging over 22 pts/gm, 6 assists/gm, 4 rbs/gm....shot 49% from the field in those games and had barely any turnovers....
meanwhile we had guys like Mike Gesell shooting 26% from the field in those games....and yet Devyn is the one who caused the collapse? Total BS.

That's like blaming Lebron for the Heats loss to the Spurs.....makes zero sense.
I have watched those games....our offense was not the problem as we averaged over 80 pts/gm in that stretch and shot close to 48%, thanks to Devyn, but our defense did not get it done. Now, that is a team deal so clearly Devyn was probably part of that issue, but the Magic are raving about his defense so I doubt it was on him really.

Our zone got exposed vs Minny and IU,...the other games were very close...with leads vs Wis with 20 seconds to go, and same with the Illini. We lost some close games, and we struggled vs quick teams ....no mystery, no one guy to point at ....so crazy that Devyn gets singled out.....the best player is who gets blamed? That's crazy talk.

Yep and I even attended some of them in person. If you read the whole thread, I never said Marble was the soul reason for the collapse....just part of the problem for his own sub-set of reasons.
