Living and Dying by the Two-Star (with some interesting data from HawkeyeGameFilm)

Re: Living and Dying by the Two-Star (with some interesting data from HawkeyeGameFilm

Kirk has lost a few of the key people over the past couple years who also were key to developing those players, two in paraticular -- Norm Parker (health) and (can't believe I'm typing this) Ken O'Keefe. I also wonder what long-term impacts the rhabdo episode is having on the program (recruits re-thinking or being steered away from Iowa, changes in the strength and conditioning regimen, limits put on workouts.)

Great article. Except for the "bullies of the Big Ten" line toward the beginning.

One Michigan player made that comment nearly 10 years ago, it was repeated by an ABC color guy during the Iowa/Michigan telecast in 2003 and has caught fire here.

The teams that beat up Michigan in 2002/2003 bare little resemblance to recent teams. Even the 2009 team was pushed around by the likes of UNI and Indiana for 3 quarters.

Nobody outside of current & former Iowa players and fans consider Iowa the "Bullies of the Big 10."

Can it be said, that the substantially smaller number of 2*s the last few years means something? Something good?

Re: Living and Dying by the Two-Star (with some interesting data from HawkeyeGameFilm

Kids from Cedar Rapids should want to play here though.

Mu username sums it all up "Malaise", how in the hell with our facilities and gameday environment can anyone excuse any schools others than O$U, $cUM, PedoU, and perhaps M$U and Wisconsin out recruiting us, even these should be a stretch some years. There was an article on here from last year that stated for an 11AM game in Champaign the alumni tailgating parking lot was EMPTY at 7:30 AM for a 11AM kickoff. If we cannot recruit against that, not to mention that armpit Champaign and a half empty memorial stadium, then as the article mentioned we are not trying hard enough. Any player not wanted by OSU, Michigan or Notre Dame in the Land of Corruption right now ought to be fair game and in play to be a Hawkeye.

Ron Zook was a 1st class dickbag no doubt, but if we had half the swagger emanating from our coach he did, I truly believe we would land some higher touted talent.

There are more than enough kids out there that commit to play somewhere to turn the program around. Not saying it will turn it around but just because you can't grip why a kid would want to go somewhere, that kid has his own agenda. You can't see why they would pick a school, it's not a decision of only football, each kid has his own reasoning for picking a destination.

Unfortunately this x 1000. We were once for a glimmering second but are a long ways from this now.

That maybe true but you cant have it both ways. YOu cant protect Kirk by saying well jeez fellas nobody want to come to Ioway. Then say well that kid went to Illinois because he wanted to change the program.

Agree - but what do you want them to say? They need to be confident in their abilities. I'm OK for the team and the ppl around the team thinking this way. They should.

Re: Living and Dying by the Two-Star (with some interesting data from HawkeyeGameFilm

Players will come to Iowa ... But we have to win ... And we are not doing much of that lately. I know this class sort of petered out, but it was not that long ago we had a top five recruiting class in all of football... it can be done. Nick Saban could go to Alaska and field a top 25 team. We sell ourselves short by buying into Kirk's we are just little 'ol Iowa ... That philosophy needs to change. We have some of the top facilities around and a head coach with a top 10 salary ...

Re: Living and Dying by the Two-Star (with some interesting data from HawkeyeGameFilm

I want them to be confident in their abilities as well. Iowa has been and still can be a physical program. I just don't think "Bullies" is right term to use. That would be Ohio St. Anyone else using it sounds silly, particularly a team that has been pushed around quite a bit over the last 2 1/2 seasons.

If a prospect is not an O-lineman or a TE, he has no reason to come to Iowa.

Jon's article is good anyalysis. He's accepted that Iowa will never be a consistent top 25 team year in year out. The thing is - folks would have said the same thing of Orgeon 10-15 years ago.

It takes a very good and innovative coach to win in places like Oregon, K-State and Iowa. Mike Billoti and Bill Snyder are those kinda coaches. Doesn't matter if you like ferentz or not when discussing this. Fact is, he is a totally different kinda coach from those two.

You might want to go tell that to Iowa's Offensive Line Coach, aka the coach's kid, who used it on occasion today:

Congratulations to LeShun Daniels Jr.! Looking forward to watching him run behind the #BulliesOfTheB1G!

Re: Living and Dying by the Two-Star (with some interesting data from HawkeyeGameFilm

It's one of the two, just depends on if you agree or not. If you agree, its analysis. If you have a different opinion, it's probably spin, right?

My guess is there are some good players in this group who will go on to be very good, and hopefully great, players for the Hawkeyes. I just think after 14 years with the same head coach, Iowa should be in a position to be getting some of the better talent to start out with, and not have to keep mining for the last nugget of gold that all the big time programs somehow passed over. It's too hard to guess right on projects every year, at least in sufficient number to make a difference. Iowa does a good job developing players, no doubt, but that argument sort of suggests that the better talent is not developing in that same time frame. If the better players equally develop, the gap remains the same.

I assume he is using this in some kind of ironic way, an anti-bullying message perhaps? A look at what happens to bullies, you end up 4-8 in a crappy B10, kind of way

That's why I don't say that nobody wants to come here. Because in reality, kids will always wind up at the Indiana and Illinois type programs because of what the individual is looking for.

Yeah, be confident, but what's the use of lying to yourself? Accept reality and build on what you got.

It's all a mindset. I think they know they aren't the bullies of the BoneG.
