Poggi, how Jim?

I found out from a call from Jim that he was being admitted. I had had some contact with him Thursday evening, fridy and over weekend because I was curious hwo workouts going, and he had soreness this weekend. Jim is progressing well. thank god he is doing well, getting great care. I have been there last 36 hours and I am thankful for care he is getting

Jim give u specifics?

Heavy squat workout Thursday, multiple reps in a certain time with % of max, and then they did a sled push after that.

How soon after workout into hospital

There were three workouts..Thursday was probably the workout that caused most soreness that I just described, Friday similar but upper body...Monday was as lower body leg workout and it was after that workout he was admitted

How u feel about training at Iowa, any concerns?

As a father, I am concerned when son goes to hospital. However, I would tell you the responsiveness of how this has been dealt with, we have been happy with that. Very happy with what has happened at the hospital. They are getting a lot of care. Also, for me as a dad, I didnt go to medical school, I have a lot of questions and people are there to answer them whenever I ask them and have been very good

Have FB coaches asnwered your questions to satisfaction?

I have spoken to Coach Wilson many tiems and Coach Ferentz at least 4 or 5 times. To answer that, everyone is in an information gathering mode, that is where people are. I think that is fair to say.

You are a coach too, is it hard to argue with the value of these winter workouts

This time of year if you are afootball player is time where you ar edoing most strenuous work. This is the same, this type of rigorous workout is same everywhere. I have sent kids that have played for me all over the country and these workouts are what happens. This is a statistical outlier that you dont see

Jim didnt think this was too excessive?

I think he was very nervous about going in this time of year for winter workouts. It was a hard workout and he called after and said it was hard, and he was very sore.

xxxxxxxx

Thursday it was general fatigue, thursday evening he started to have severe quad pain. That continued through Friday, upper body...over weekend it did not subside, it got a little worse and working on stretching, going to steam room and just didnt get any better and got worse. Monday workout, jumping and things, it didnt go well. That is when training staff, his urine became discolored and that is when staff sent him to the hospital

Jim any supplement

Not that I know of. He does drink a normal protein supplement

you have been over there, moral?

I have seen all of them...as a father, there are 12 or 13 in there, but laste night there must have been 25 kids come over an see their teammates...that was touching. They want to get out of there. they have had it walking around in the gowns with the no backs. I would tell you candidly that they want to get back and start playing. How long does it keep you out? That is a part of the concern. There is also some disappointment, getting ready for spring, that this has happened. Some fear

Was this beginning of workout, do they go from 0 to 60 break to workout?

Paul: Our workouts concluded in AZ...the day team left, that was recovery time..that was the 29th...classes started on 18th...so that is an important time, the recovery time. Workouts resumed last Thursday

Jim was off

Mr Poggi: yeah, he came home from bowl game next day and I would imagine most of them didnt do anything. Jim didnt do anything except eat a lot and lay around and this was first day back and there is a lot of work

Jim never been through it, is it common denominator here?

Paul F: Cant get into names, variety of positions and ages, some with us three or four years, some with program for a sememster

0 to 60, lot go home and rest, and then hop right back in, is that responsible?

Paul: This is an ambitiouys and strenuouys period next seven weeks. I would not phrase it that way. these kids know what is in front of them. It has been part of our workout at this time of year in the past. This is an anomaly and have not seen this type of response before

Q Consider changes?

Paul: Priority is recovery and back to school, and i am sure changes will be considered...always looking for better way to do things, all things.

What is understaning if they feel bad or too hard worked, do they know who to go to?

Paul: The one thing I can tell u is the physical status of any player deemed by our trainers and medical people, their opinions and feedback is first and foremost. If there are conditions that need actiivty to be limited, that is what happens. there is an open line of access and communication with athletes and medical personnel

Jim told trainers he was sore and kept working, do they say to work through it?

Paul: I dont know when that ocurred, buta number of student athletes feel that soresness when the program begins in the winter. When the medical team sees or hears any symptom that is more concerned, they can act upon it.

Did Jim's treatment include dialysis?

Poggi: No. Bedrest, heavy IV fluids wiwth some other kinds of protocols and blood work

Reaction from Coach Doyle

Paul: everyone is concerned from the top down. All of our staff who spends time with these young men that we do we are concerned for their recovery safe discharge and back in class...that goes beyond the staff

All supplemnts have to pass NCAA

They set standards for what is permissable to give to student atheltes, and institution has anotehr eval, and then we eval from a staff basis...once they meet standards, they can be introduced. Nothing new introduced over break

Do athletes take things without knowledge of staff

Possible. But the environment we have fostered is that is risky, can carry significant risks . Its unregulated...when u do it on your own when it has not been cleared, that carries risks with it

Q: What role can supplements play

A: Stokes: I assume you mean supplements at a health store? One thing about food supplements is you can pick them up, read the label and that may have nothing to d o what is inside the bottle. These agents are not regulated by FDA. Manufacturer can put whatever they want in it and they dont have to tell the truth. I hope most labels are correct but we see many examples where people have taken such things that have received damage to organs. It is possible that people taking food supplemnets can take something the label says safe but could contain something injurious

Good work Jon, I felt this comment interesting and scary...

My early reaction having listened live...

END OF PRESSER

is that the UI did themselves no favors with this PC. No one at the PC from the strength staff that could provide any details on the workouts being done or describe the timeline of events as they played out.

The media will continue (and should continue) to pile on and ask questions. If you end up with 12 or 13 players hospitalized as a result of workouts, then something is wrong, either with the regimen being given to the players or with something the players were doing. It's good that the players are receiving care and should all be fine, but something like this just cannot/should not happen.

I'm not going Gregg Doyel on the UI here, but they need to get their heads out of their rear ends and put the information out there.
